WINTER INSIDER’S GUIDE 2020 SNOW CHAINS From the 6th of June until the end of the season, all vehicles driving to Victorian alpine resorts are required by law to carry snow chains (including 4WD’s). You can rent these at several outlets in Myrtleford, Bright and Mt Beauty along the way. Thanks to the great work of our snow clearing crew and a sheltered approach, chain fitting usually applies only during, or directly after heavy snowfall. Make sure you fit chains only when and where advised by LED signage or resort staff. Be sure to obey all signage and instruction. If you do need to fit chains there are designated bays to do this. Please ensure you are safely off the road before exiting the vehicle. If you are unsure whether you need to fit chains check the live status in the snow report at fallscreek.com.au or the Falls Creek phone app. You can also call Visitor Information on (03) 5758 1202. TIPS FOR DRIVING AT FALLS CREEK • LP gas vehicles: Switch to petrol for best performance in alpine areas. • D iesel vehicles: Alpine diesel fuel mix should be used in all diesel vehicles (available in Myrtleford, Bright and Mt Beauty). • Fuel: Fill up in Mt Beauty as there is no fuel available at Falls Creek. • S now chains: Pack your chains at the ready for easy access in-case conditions change on your drive. Always fit chains only when advised as fitting chains on a dry road can damage the road and your vehicle. • Driving: In icy conditions, avoid sudden braking or hard acceleration. • V isibility: Drive with your headlights on in foggy conditions and avoid using high beams. • S now on vehicle: Do not drive with accumulated snow on your vehicle, doing so is dangerous and creates hazards to other vehicles. • I cy windows: Use a stiff plastic scraper to clear ice from car windows (never pour hot water on an icy windscreen!). • S now clearing: You may need a shovel to dig your car out of the snow. Make sure you take this to your accommodation & don’t leave it in the car! • P arking: If staying for a few days it is a good idea to fit chains when you park in case of heavy snowfall. This will make it easier to dig out and move your car afterwards. 10

WINTER INSIDER’S GUIDE 2020 WHEN YOU ARRIVE RESORT ENTRY PASS During the snow season all vehicles entering the resort require a valid Resort Entry Pass for the duration of your stay. This includes the day of arrival and departure. All Resort Entry Passes expire at midnight on the last day of the pass. Resort Entry Passes must be purchased online and in advance. They can no longer be purchased at the Howman’s Gap gate, so it is integral that these are arranged prior to your arrival in resort. The charge is per vehicle and it doesn’t matter how many passengers you have, or whether you are staying at Falls Creek or off the mountain. If you arrive after 5pm, until 12pm that night entry is free, but for the remainder of your stay, you are required to purchase a vehicle resort entry pass. 12

FALLSCREEK.COM.AU OUR ENVIRONMENT At Falls Creek the mountains, clean air and pristine alpine views are our greatest asset. There are many ways you can help protect our beautiful environment during your stay. If you drop it, you drink it! Falls Creek is situated at the top of the water catchment and water from our streams feed the Murray river and eventually travels all the way to South Australia. Please don’t pollute our pristine waters by littering….bin it! Reduce your waste Falls Creek has been collecting and recycling its food waste since 2011. Up to 40% of the resort’s waste is foodwaste and when placed in landfill produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Look for the green ‘Living Bin’ in your accommodation and separate your food waste (fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, tea bags…anything that was once living). You can also reduce your waste by bringing your reusable coffee cup and reusable shopping bags with you to Falls Creek, just like you do at home. Protect Our Winters The effects of climate change could dramatically impact the alpine region’s unique biodiversity. Falls Creek proudly supports the Protect Our Winters campaign which aims to mobilize the outdoor sport community to take positive action on climate change. Some small actions you can take include; • R educe transport energy. Car pool to Falls Creek and walk around the village as much as you can. • T urn off lights and appliances at the power point when not in use. • Insulate your house or lodge. Turn down the thermostat and use draught stoppers. • Invest in high star-rating, energy efficient appliances, and wash clothes in cold water. • P urchase greenhouse friendly products and purchase local to reduce the carbon footprint of transporting products. • S upport renewable energy sources. Switch to Green Power with your electricity provider. 51
