Proudly Presented by WELCOME WELCOME FROM TEAM IN2ADVENTURE On behalf of team In2Adventure we would like to send out the biggest welcome to athletes, friends and families attending the Snowies Mountain Bike Festival. We are so excited to host such a huge weekend of mountain biking and welcome athletes from across Australia and overseas to the iconic Snowy Mountains in New South Wales. We look forward to hopefully helping you to take away some amazing memories and experiences of your time in the Snowy Mountains that will stay with you for a lifetime. Five years ago we visited this amazing part of Australia and had a dream to invite the world to this iconic destination. In 2016 that dream came true and we welcomed athletes from 28 countries across the globe to the 2016 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships and Snowies Mountain Bike Festival to enjoy the sports that we love so much. 2018 sees the continuation of that dream and we are so very proud to have the privilege to host the Snowies Mountain Bike Festival in conjunction with the Australian XTri and Aquathlon Championships and, after three years of planning, to see the launch of the all new Snowies Ultra Trail Run Festival. To host these events is a great joy and it is a true privilege to welcome each and every one of you to our special In2Adventure Family. We wish you every success and no matter what your dreams or goals at this event we encourage you to aim high, strive with everything you have, but most importantly have an awesome time doing it. Now let’s get this party started! Best Wishes Robyn & Simon & the In2Adventure Team 2018 Snowies MTB Festival Athletes Guide | 5 Version 3 updated 29/1/18

Proudly Presented by RACE STAGES IMPORTANT PRE-STAGE INFORMATION Before the start of each stage all riders/team members must: 1. Sign in at the Race HQ Tent to confirm they are starting the Stage, and 2. Attend the Pre-race Safety Briefing. Check the Event Timetable for times STAGE 1: ‘HAPPY HOUR’ TIME TRIAL | 5.5KM Riders will start at 30 second intervals to smash out a single 5.5km time trial lap of the flowing single track around Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa. The scenery is spectacular as competitors ride along the banks of the Little Thredbo River, but in this time trial, you may just be going too fast to notice. This is not a seeding race – the Time Trial will count towards the overall standings and the fastest Stage 1 male and female riders will be awarded Leaders’ Jerseys that will have the other riders shaking in their cleats as we move into Stage 2….. The Thredbo Summit Smash! 2018 Snowies MTB Festival Athletes Guide | 17 Version 3 updated 29/1/18
Proudly Presented by STAGE 2: THREDBO SUMMIT SMASH | 19.5KM Stage 2 gives riders a chance to show the Snowies who’s boss as we smash it up the 19.5km ascent climbing 533m from Lake Crackenback to Thredbo Resort. With a mass start, competitors will be challenged with an elevation change of 530m on this iconic ride that culminates at Friday Flat. Think this is a tedious uphill slog? THINK AGAIN! The Thredbo Valley Trail presents some of the best riding trails found anywhere in Australia. Riders gain elevation along deceptively undulating single track that twists and turns with flowing descents along the way. And the Scenery!.... Although racing hard, you will enjoy some of the most spectacular views in the Snowy Mountains Region as the Thredbo Valley Trail leads you on a gradual climb through diverse landscape including mountain ash forest, snow gum woodlands, riverine woodlands, mountain bog, wet heath and sub alpine grasslands. Among the many highlights of the trail are the numerous suspension bridges spanning the river, offering riders a brief reprieve from the sound of rubber on dirt, as well as spectacular views of the Thredbo River from above. During this stage riders will be afforded rewarding views of Porcupine Rocks exploding out of the rugged realms of the Ramshead Range, and discover a hidden gem in the Muzzelwood Wetlands. 2018 Snowies MTB Festival Athletes Guide | 18 Version 3 updated 29/1/18
Proudly Presented by BETWEEN STAGES 2 & 3 Stage 2 of the festival will finish at Friday Flat at Thredbo. After your race why not head up to the Village Terminal where you can grab some grub at the many restaurants and bars or how about some retail therapy at Thredbo’s many retail outlets. But don’t get too cosy, Stage 3 awaits and it’s time to check your gear at the transport bus and check in for the Thredbo All Mountain Descent at Village Terminal which is located approx. 1km west of Friday Flat (please see map below) STAGE 3: THREDBO ALL MOUNTAIN DESCENT | 5.8KM After dropping your gear at the transport bus, checking in for Stage 3 and celebrating our GC leaders at the presentations at Village Terminal it’s time to get ready to board the Kosciuszko Express chairlift to the top of Eagles Nest and then ride to the start of Stage 3 at the top of Gun Barrel Chair. Get ready to delight in 5.8kms of epic downhill on Thredbo’s All Mountain Trail where we descend from the top of Gun Barrell Chairlift overlooked by the peak of Mt Kosciusko down to Friday Flat at Thredbo Resort. STAGE 3 CONTINUES STRAIGHT INTO STAGE 4 This stage finishes at the Friday Flat timing point. Here solo riders continue riding straight onto the Thredbo Valley Trail for the Stage 4 Gravity Check. The finish time for Stage 3 will be the Start time for Stage 4. Teams have the option to swap riders between stages in the transition area at Friday Flat. 2018 Snowies MTB Festival Athletes Guide | 19 Version 3 updated 29/1/18
Proudly Presented by NON-COMPETITIVE TRANSFER STAGE Stage 3 includes a non-competitive transfer where riders will make their way to the start of stage 3, via the Kosciuszko Express Chair Lift and then ride 2.6km to the top of Gun Barrel Chair. Riders will start at 30 second intervals and start times will be published at Village Terminal at Stage 3 registration. IMPORTANT: RIDERS MUST BE AT THE START LINE ON TIME It is important to check start times and ensure you allow enough time to travel to the start. Riders should allow at least 45 minutes for the transfer. COLD WEATHER GEAR SHUTTLE Because it can be quite cool on the chair and at the start line of this stage it is recommended that riders wear a windproof jacket to the start line. The jacket can be placed in our vehicle to be delivered back down to Lake Crackenback Resort at the finish of Stage 4. Please note that the vehicle will not return to Lake Crackenback Resort until the final rider has finished Stage 3 estimated to be at approx. 4:15pm. THE KOSCIUZKO EXPRESS CHAIR LIFT: INCLUDED IN EVENT ENTRY The chair lift is 1.8km long and rises 560 vertical metres. The ride takes 15 minutes one way and offers spectacular valley views. This is a real experience in itself. The uplift for the stage, for one person, is included with each solo and team entry. To enter the chair lift riders must display a Snowies MTB Race Plate on each bike. 2018 Snowies MTB Festival Athletes Guide | 20 Version 3 updated 29/1/18
Proudly Presented by Each chair is equipped with bike racks which are located on the rear of the chair. On approach, follow the lift attendants directions. Stand with your bike on it’s rear wheel with the front wheel in the air. Place the front wheel in the bike rack and then move to the front of the chair to sit down. Ensure the safety bar is lowered and remains down for the entire journey. On arrival at Eagles Nest, alight the chair lift where indicated and remove your bike from the rack. MTB TRANSFER The MTB transfer ride from the top of Kosciuzko Express Chair Lift to the start of Stage 3 is approx 2.6km. The route will be signed on the day. The newly opened trail links the top of the Kosciuszko Express chairlift to the start of Stage 3 at the top of Gunbarrel. It gives riders easier access to the start of the stage without having to negotiate the ultra steep fire roads. WHAT DOES ANDY BLAIR HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS STAGE? “The Thredbo All Mountain Trail is fantastic. It is a flowing and fun roller-coaster ride from the top of the Gun Barrel Chairlift down to the village and is achievable on any bike from a hardtail to a trail bike. It will be a new format for many but it’s nothing to be scared of; just follow the age old rule of riding within your limits and remember there are still two more stages to go after this one. Let the chairlift do the hard work for you and let gravity put a smile on your face!” 2018 Snowies MTB Festival Athletes Guide | 21 Version 3 updated 29/1/18
Proudly Presented by STAGE 4: GRAVITY CHECK | 18.5KM 18.5km Descent from Friday Flat in Thredbo to Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa Stage 4 sees riders back on the iconic Thredbo Valley Trail on a downhill mission! Each riders time will be recorded at Friday Flat at the end of Stage 3 where riders continue straight onto the Thredbo Valley Trail. The Stage 3 fnish time is also the start time for Stage 4. Riders will be glad they took in all the scenery this amazing trail has to offer on the Stage 2 climb, as the fast-flowing single track on the descent will have riders engrossed in the pure thrill and exhilaration that perfect, downhill flowing trails can deliver. Time to remember what it's like to be a kid again on this roller coaster ride of pure joy on iconic mountain trails. It’s not all easy-rolling though – on reaching the end of the Thredbo Valley Trail the course takes an action-packed turn onto technical single track traversing the Thredbo River Trail, before returning to Lake Crackenback Resort for a well-earned rest. The fastest male and female riders for stage 3 and stage 4 will be the envy of all others as they don their Leaders’ Jerseys for the final leg on Sunday. 2018 Snowies MTB Festival Athletes Guide | 22 Version 3 updated 29/1/18

Proudly Presented by ATHLETE BRIEFINGS COMPULSORY BRIEFING At In2adventure we value the safety of our athletes and aim to ensure they enjoy the very best experience at our events. For this reason, it is compulsory for all athletes to attend the designated briefing at the assigned times at Race HQ. The Race Director reserves the right to refuse entry to the start to any competitor that does not attend the briefing for that stage, as it includes important safety and course information that is essential for athletes to enjoy a safe and fair race. The briefing also includes any last-minute changes to the course or event details. No compensation is applicable if a competitor is refused entry to the start for this reason. Please refer to the Event Timetable for event briefing times. RACE NUMBERS & TIMING SOLOS Each solo rider will be issued with a numbered race plate. This is to be clearly displayed on the front handle bars of the bike at all times when racing. TEAMS Each team member will be issued with one race number per team and one backing plate per person. Team riders attach the backing plate to the front of the handlebars and the rider who is currently competing attaches the race number to the backing plate using the velcro on the plate and number. Race plates can then easily be swapped between team members, especially in Sunday’s marathon. RACE NUMBER INFORMATION It is a race rule that all participants must have their race number clearly visible on the front of their bike handlebars at all times when racing. Non-compliance will result in penalties The race number can be attached to the handlebars using the ties provided at Registration. Ensure the number is safely secured. If your number is lost on the course, you must report the loss to the Race Director immediately. Participants are not permitted to enter the course without displaying their allocated number. Numbers are not to be cut, altered, disfigured, damaged, covered or obscured in any way. Penalties, disqualification and/or fines will apply in this circumstance. ELECTRONIC TIMING An electronic timing chip will be attached to the rear of the race plate to record lap and finish times. 2018 Snowies MTB Festival Athletes Guide | 31 Version 3 updated 29/1/18

Proudly Presented by RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT In2Adventure is committed to maintaining a minimal impact policy that will protect the environment and enable us as individual members of the general public and members of the outdoor community to continue to enjoy the vast natural environment that is Australia’s backyard. Therefore we ask that competitors read and agree to abide by the Bush Code and Mountain Bike Code outlined on in our Environmental Policy and ensure that no rubbish, gel packets or wrappers are dropped on the course during the event. NATIVE WILDLIFE Australia is home to a number of poisonous reptiles and insects that may be encountered on the course during the event and in training. In most situations when left alone they pose little harm, however, be aware you are entering into their habitat and should respect that this is their home. INSURANCE In2Adventure has public liability insurance. This DOES NOT cover you as a participant in any of the XC MTB events. If you fall off your bike and hurt yourself, there is no accident cover for you. In2Adventure recommends that all participants have their own personal accident insurance. Prior to entering the event each participant will be required to read, understand & agree to the Release & Waiver.
