School District of Black Hawk The School District of Black Hawk does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, or handicap in educational programs or activities or in employment. August 2020 Message from The Principal Aww 2020……a year that no one will forget. I want to thank all of our students and families for being so patient in awaiting our back to school plan for 2020-2021. As you were expecting, it is not back to business as usual. There are still many precautions that society is asking its citizens to adhere to, to minimize the risks of spreading the Covid-19 virus. And thus, we as a school district, are taking those same precautions. There are aspects of school life that we may not get to experience at the beginning of our fall semester. We are all in a wait and see status. What we do know is that it is important to get back into the swing of acquiring those skills that we need for life in the 21st century. Reading for understanding, problem solving, team collaboration, writing and communication skills, and learning to incorporate media to serve a purpose; are all things that we need to continue to develop as individuals. And so, your education is still a fundamental piece of your development into an adult member of so- ciety. We will do our best, with the resources we have, to provide you the best possible education that our com- munity can. Whether you are virtual learning from home, or attending school; your participation in your educa- tion is so important. You will need to be flexible, and organized, and willing to do your part to grow your skills. We will be utilizing Schoology, as on online learning management systems, and it will serve as a major part of our learning process. Students, teachers, and parents will be using Schoology to plan, find resources, communicate, and organize their learning. The first few days of school will be spent maximizing your experience with this online tool. In the event that the school needs to go to 100% virtual learning; you will all have the tools necessary to continue your education. One major difference this school year that I want to point out is, that of attendance. Black Hawk Schools will be very accommodating to families when it comes to reporting illness as a reason for absence. The main idea here is: IF YOU ARE SICK, CALL IN - AND STAY HOME! For the safety of the entire community, we want people to be cau- tious if they are feeling ill, and to not come into school. Our nurse’s guidelines on coming to school were laid out in our Back To School plan. As we forge ahead into the new school year, we will do so with a Warrior’s Spirit. We will be flexible, respectful, responsible, and ambitious. We are united Together, as the Warrior Nation, to make this the best 2020-2021 school year it can be under our current circumstances. See you soon, Principal Milz

Reopening Plan The reopening plan can be found here: https://www.blackhawk.k12.wi.us/userfiles/2/my%20files/reopening%20plan%20-%20student%20(1).pdf?id=498 I am taking this opportunity to say thank you to all of those that were willing to contribute to the development of the plan. The following volunteered and contributed to the development of the plan. Erica Wand Cathy McCauley Rebecca Neff Christilee Sprinkle Carol Ruegsegger Josh Firgens Michael Flanagan Don Fulton Linda Figi Kerry Holland Kristina Petitjean Kirsten Eckerman Kelly Place Travis Signer Dee Paulson Willy Chambers Cory Milz Jessica Seffrood Dan Campbell In addition, the following staff members worked on the common parameters for Schoology. The intent is to have common parameters to make Schoology more user friendly for parents and students. Mike Flanagan Michael Burke Josh Firgens Linda Figi Kelly Place There are still components of the plan which are works in progress that we will be sharing out as they are complet- ed. Please understand these plans may change as our environment changes. We will do our best to give the commu- nity as much lead time as we can as the plans change. On occasion, we will have to make decisions that need to be implemented immediately. We appreciate the patience the students, parents, staff and community have shown thus far. We hope that you are willing to continue to work with us until we are to a new normal at the end of this pan- demic. Sincerely, Willy Chambers Football Field I would like to thank several people for their efforts to prepare our football field for the season. First and foremost, Wes Phillips was the person in charge of developing and implementing a plan of attack. Wes did an excellent job of pulling everything together and getting the field to where it is now. Some other key players were Randy Goodwin who tiled the field. They laid lines of tile across the field and connect a line to the area near the track gate. They also installed a sump to pump the water out of the northwest corner of the field where the tile drains. Jack Fuchs installed wiring for the sump and another tile from the garage to the sump. They also took the time to connect the down spout from the garage to the tile system. Jack reworked the slop from the gate near the garage to the football field. Wes Phillips, Randall Everson, Eric Berget and Lee Liphart all worked to get the field seeded and rolled. The seed has started to emerge. Powers Auction Service has generously contributed to the project. They have paid for the seed and contributed to the cost of the tiling via the fundraising they do for the district. They have contributed $5252 toward this project. Thank you, Willy Chambers
Riding the School Bus If you are relying on the Black Hawk School District for transportation to and from school, it is imperative that you understand the expectations and rules that go along with being on our school buses. Failure to comply with the following directives, WILL result in removal from the bus route. Transportation from school is not a student right, and a school district does not have to provide transportation for students. It is so important that you go over these bus rules with your children before the first day of school. 1. Be at your designated bus stop pick-up on time. The bus driver does not have to wait for you to appear. If the bus driver does not see students approaching the bus or waiting, they will briefly stop and place out the traffic stop sign. If still no appearance of student (s), the bus driver will continue onto their route. 2. All bus riders must wear a face covering onto the bus. No exceptions. If your student does not have a face covering, there is no guarantee that one will be available. If this is the case, the bus driver will notify the school, who will notify the families that they must provide their own transportation for that day. 3. Students are asked to only bring necessary items for school onto the school bus. 4. Food and beverages will NOT be allowed on the school bus. 5. Students will be given an assigned seat by order of pick-up and drop-off. This is to keep students passing each other on the bus to a minimum. 6. Students must absolutely remain seated during the bus ride. There will be no changing or jumping of seats on the school bus. 7. Students must keep their face covering on at all times during the bus ride. 8. Students are subject to the Black Hawk Schools Code of Conduct and Step System. Acts of harassment, bullying, vulgar language, abuse will result in students being referred to the building principal for behavioral consequences and plans.
