CORONADO CAYS YACHT CLUB www.ccyc.org ISSUE 1 Januar y NAVIGATOR MAGAZINE 2021 From the Pilothouse Commodore Dave Murree C CYC's future and the port ~ As many of you know, we lease our land from the San Diego Port Authority. In addition, we sublease additional space that covers our bocce ball court and extended grass area. These leases expire in 2034, by which time we will have to negotiate a new lease with the port. Any new lease agreement will need to be compliant with the Port's Master Development Plan. The negotiation is expected to take several years and has many moving parts. This year's Board of Directors is seeking volunteers to join a Lease Negotiation Committee. The Committee will be responsible to the Board for negotiating a new lease pending final review by the Financial Advisory Committee and Approval by the Board. Members appointed to the committee will be asked to become familiar with our current lease, the Port's Master Development Plan and future lease requirements, as determined by the Board of Directors. Members will be expected to remain on the committee to provide continuity during the multi-year negotiations. If you are interested in being considered for this committee, please let me know. I cannot stress enough how important it will be for the future of CCYC to negotiate a favorable new lease. Thank you for considering and I look forward to seeing everyone at the club!
4 THE NAVIGATOR I 30 Caribe Cay Blvd N Coronado, CA 92118 hope you all enjoyed the Valentine’s Day celebrations on our patio last 32°37’30”N 117°07’50”W month. The new heaters were up and running, and provided a nice (619) 429-0133 Office (619) 429-8163 Fax warm shelter from the cold weather we have experienced recently. The next step will be to hang the new windbreakers. Huge thanks to Van OFFICE HOURS Peterson for providing his technical expertise on this project. M - F 8 AM - 4 PM DINING ROOM The tides are changing. Covid numbers are on the decrease, and HOURS vaccines are getting rolled out. This gives me great hope that we will Monday, Wednesday, soon have less restrictions and will be able to provide inside dining. Friday 4:30 PM - 7:30 PM We will of course be keeping a close eye on this and will Saturday communicate when we are able to have you back inside. With this in 11AM-2PM Sunday mind, please remember to make reservations for dining. This will 10AM-2PM better enable staff to provide great service and reduce wait times. THE NAVIGATOR 5 T here was a lot of excitement at the club last month as we began to re-open for outdoor dining and events. The Super Bowl party was a huge success with over 81 members sitting outside all socially distancing. Everyone enjoyed the game, speciality drinks, and food. Lilly and our kitchen did another great job! We sold 41 Party Platters and an additional 34 individual item orders were picked up or delivered to our members in the Cays. Following the Super Bowl, we quickly turned our attention to Valentines Day. We sold out our available tables outside and served over 85 members, both at the club and takeout or delivery in the Cays. The new heaters have been installed and as I write this article new windbreakers are being prepared to further protect our patio and outside bar area from inclement weather. We’ve added a new TV cart to make viewing of the outdoor TV even better. Both of these events would not have been as successful without so many of our members participating. Thank you. As we re-open, I thought now would be a good time to address two issues: Reservations: We were able to have the two very successful events in February, as well as continue service during our regular club hours thanks to our members who make reservations. Making a reservation by phone or online has never been easier and it helps our kitchen and serving staff in so many ways. We are able to better prepare and manage our food and staff needs with advance notice. This enables us to reduce costs or increase staff as needed to provide better service. This also helps you get the table you want and will reduce your wait when you come into the club during a busy time. Please continue to make reservations even for lunch or brunch on the weekends. That will go a long way to help us better manage our operations. Parking: I am working closely with our Port Captain to begin a process to monitor and enforce parking in our small lot. As a reminder, members are allowed one car per family parked in the lot at one time. All vehicles must have current DMV registration and be operational as well as be registered with CCYC and display the sticker on the windshield. Since we have limited parking for members visiting the club, it is important that marina tenants and visiting guests park on the street whenever possible. Caribe Cays North does not have the limits on parking that exist in the rest of the Cays or Coronado so there is no limit to how long you can leave your car parked there. Watch for announcements about music on the patio with our very own Brian Geoltz as well as other events we’re planning as we continue to re-open the club. From the Quarter Deck Vice Commodore Jerry Rosenbusch

CCYC THE NAVIGATOR 7 On &Around the Water S oon we will start to see warmer weather and calmer seas allowing us to kick off the cruising season in earnest. As the vaccines continue to roll out it will help us to get back to the normal cruising and rafting up we have always enjoyed. In the meantime, you should head out with your “bubble” to one of the many anchorages we are so fortunate to have in the local area. As I said last month if you plan on joining us for the May 21st LaPlaya raft up, please make sure you get your individual permits ASAP for the trip. It costs nothing to reserve the spot and you can cancel or give it to a fellow club member if your plans change. In addition, if you are planning to arrive early for July 4th, please get your individual permit. As of now, we are down to 7 slots left for both events. http://reservations.portofsandiego.org/boating/Index.asp There is still no word on using our reciprocal privileges with the other local Yacht Clubs, but I will let you know as soon as I hear that they are welcoming other clubs. Just in case you missed it in the last Navigator below is the proposed schedule: 2021 CCYC Cruise Schedule April 23 - 25; Cays Turning Basin (subject to Covid 19 restrictions) May 21 - 23; LaPlaya Raft up - Individual permit required July 1 - 5; July 4th Raft up – Glorietta Bay - Early permit required August 6 - 8; Mission Bay Cruise September 3 - 11; Newport and Catalina – Reservation at Marina Park required If you have any questions, please contact me at gcross38@gmail.com. 8 THE NAVIGATOR Greetings CCYC! I would like to begin by welcoming two new Marina tenants: First, Rear Commodore Sue Steven and Craig Blasingame to D6 with their 2006 Lear 20 electric boat, and second, Dave and Marissa Bower to D3 with their 2005 39’ Beneteau sailboat. Please stop by to say hello. During our annual boat inspections, I asked marina tenants if they would like an additional free US Coast Guard inspection of their vessels. The answer was a resounding YES! I have contacted Bob and Diana Simon with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary to give me a COVID-friendly time frame in which to conduct an inspection blitz. To date, we are looking to schedule these inspections toward the end of May, 2021. If you are interested in having one of these inspections, please review the form below, outlining the areas to be addressed. If your vessel passes the USCG inspection, you will receive a Vessel Safety Decal for your boat. In addition, I will be working with Diana Simon to present a four hour seminar to CCYC members entitled Total in Command. The course is designed for boaters of all levels to enhance your boat handling skills. I will provide the date and time when I have them secured. FYI- we can now Dock and Dine! Please call the restaurant with your dining reservation and contact me for Guest Dock availability before your arrival. See you on the water! – Van Peterson Port Captain Van Peterson

The America’s Cup has turned out to be a disaster for America with the capsizing of the New York Yacht Club’s American Magic and the straight losses to the Italians in the semi-finals of the PRADA Cup. The PRADA Cup selects the Challenger to race against New Zealand in the America’s Cup Finals in March. At the time of this writing, the Italian boat has beaten the British boat in four straight races, with three more needed to win the PRADA. The America’s Cup races between the PRADA Cup winner and New Zealand are scheduled for March 6-15. Italy’s Luna Rossa boat wins the PRADA Cup and will challenge New Zealand in the America’s Cut beginning on March 6. Happy Sailing, RG Main Sail Trim Sail Captain RG Head
10 THE NAVIGATOR Hello Mates! O n Sunday February 21st, an athletic group of CCYC human ‘water bugs’ ventured over to the basin south of Chula Vista Marina to hover quietly and watch the resident turtles surface to check us out! Over 30 Members participated in kayaks, paddle boats and row boats for this event. We sought out a weekend morning low tide and weren’t disappointed. The weather was perfect with glass on the way over and a light breeze on the way home. We only saw 1 turtle, but given the size of our flotilla, we may have rightly given them a reason to be shy! Many thanks to Jerry, Mel, Van and Eric who were the safety team in 3 skiffs, shepherding the crowd over and back. Check out more photos on page 20! FOR MARCH, we have scheduled another CCYC Golf Tournament at Coronado Golf Course. We had a waitlist for this fun event in January, so we are excited to offer it again. The format will be Best Ball Scramble again, except that we will ask you to register as a twosome. Then we will pair up twosomes by pulling names from a hat to create our foursomes for the event. Should be lots of fun and a chance to meet a member or two you didn’t know. Prizes of course! The date is yet to be confirmed by the course, but we anticipate it will be held on Thursday, March 25th, between 10am and noon. Watch for the flyer that will be sent out, confirming the date and telling you how to register your twosome. Cost will be $18 per person for registration. Your greens fee and any cart rental will be paid directly to the course on the day of the event. FOR APRIL, we will be hosting a scavenger hunt for electric boats and small boats. It will take place on the waters of the Cays. Prizes of course!! Looking forward to seeing you all soon! - Rome All Hands on Deck Power Captain Rome Ventura

12 THE NAVIGATOR THE NAVIGATOR 12 Regalia News W e are so happy to be OPEN FOR BUSINESS once again!!! We have great plans for this Spring and Summer. As the Club continues to slowly re-open, more of us are comfortable coming to the Club and enjoying all that it has to offer. We have been restocking and reorganizing our Bosun’s Locker in preparation for our Re- Opening. Where is our Bosun’s Locker? Our Bosun’s Locker is in the Burgee Lounge and is the center of Regalia Sales activities. In the locker, we store sales slips, shopping bags for purchases and other equipment, along with a display of some of merchandise available for sale. In this issue, please note the picture of merchandise hanging in The Bosun’s Locker along with the beautifully hand carved Bosun’s Locker sign. This sign was made by CCYC member Gary Adalian when the C-Gulls had the locker designed and built. We are very grateful for the artistry, thought and many hours of work that went into this incredible addition to our Bosun’s Reyn Spooner reversible hooded windbreaker Locker. Thank you, once again, Gary Adalian. and Reyn Spooner shirt with Sportailor men's What is a Bosun’s Locker? shorts. The shorts are Quick-Dry with zippered pocket- perfect for boating. A Bosun (also Boatswain) is a sailing ship officer whose job it is to look after the ship and its equipment, including sails, rigging, and cables. Well, we don’t have any sails or riggings in our Bosun’s Locker, but we do have some ships’ flags, including CCYC burgees, floating key rings and many other items on display with our Club logo on them. On Wednesday, March 3rd, C-Gulls will be hosting our annual Commodore’s luncheon. 14 THE NAVIGATOR Boat Appetit With Floating Chef Carole Jensen Irish Blessing: “May your joys be as deep as the oceans, Your troubles as light as its foam, and may you find sweet peace of mind Wherever you may roam” O ne of the many blessings we enjoy at the CCYC is making new friends. In time, these new friends become a very important part of our families. In a small community such as ours, we are bound to get to know each other better, learn that we have a tremendous support system and have friends who we can laugh, eat and drink with. I am dedicating this column not to just the ‘luck’ of the Irish, but to the luck of having made such true and wonderful new friends at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club. I remember when Alan Sweetow vetted Eric and I, he shared the same sentiment… what we did not know, was how lucky we would become. His kind words ring true for us and so this one is for all of you who have made Eric and I feel so much at home. You know who you are, and we look forward to making many more such friends. “Family is our life jacket in the stormy sea of life” Vegetarian Lobster Rolls: https://youtu.be/uV-UyLWXkCA Speaking of family: The above video was made by my youngest son, Alexander Rosen. He is a chef and a Sommelier living in Napa, Ca., with his sweet wife Sarah, who is a pastry chef. The apple didn't fall far from the tree with this one! After you watch the video, remember to like, share and subscribe. Nutty and slightly musky, hearts of palm is a white vegetable that comes from the center of a specific variety of palm trees. They are actually the stem tips harvested from the growing palm tree. It’s prized for its culinary versatility, is high in Vitamin C, packed with fiber, vitamin B6, calcium, zinc and very low in calories. They make a great addition to salads, or in this case, a stand in for imitation lobster. Of course, if you want to substitute fresh lobster- just remember to invite me over too!
THE NAVIGATOR 15 This is the recipe for the heart of palm filling only. The video has a full recipe for the rolls too. If you do not want to bother making the rolls, I would suggest using Brioche buns and painting them with the melted garlic butter recipe. Toast them lightly before adding the filling . Note about roll substitution: You need not just a good roll, but an outstanding roll…This is essential to the recipe! Ingredients: ✴ One can drained hearts of Palm- Slice each heart lengthwise and then into bit sized chunks ✴ ½ cup real Mayonnaise ✴ 1 tbsp Dijon mustard ✴ 1 tsp smoked Hungarian Paprika or other ✴ ½ tsp cayenne pepper ✴ Juice of one small lemon- no seeds ✴ One stalk of celery- finely diced ✴ Small bunch of chopped dry parsley ✴ Smaller bunch of chopped dill ✴ 4 tbsp chopped chives- save half for garnish ✴ Good quality salt like Maldon or Truffle or other- texture is key - so something flakey Garlic butter recipe ✴ 4 cloves of well chopped garlic ✴ 3 tbsp salted sweet butter Directions: 1. Toss the hearts of palm, celery, mayo, dijon and lemon juice together. 2. Add half of the chives and mix until just incorporated well. 3. Melt butter and add chopped garlic and bring to barely a simmer or until just fragrant. 4. Paint each bun with the prepared garlic butter and very lightly toast until barely golden. Speaking of how to slice the bun, I slice mine on the top, not the side. 5. Line each toasted bun with some butter lettuce. 6. Add filling, sprinkle with Paprika, salt and more chives. If you would like the full recipe for the delicious buns Alexander made in the video message me: atchezcarole@gmail.com Carole Jensen
16 THE NAVIGATOR Board Shorts A brief look into February’s BOD Meeting The following topics were discussed at the recent Board of Directors meeting. 18 THE NAVIGATOR Ahoy Bookworms! Join us every 3rd Sunday for our discussions on our nautical book. We are currently attending these on ZOOM and they are a lot of fun. So… mark your calendars and make the mimosas! All are welcome! MARCH SELECTION The Boundless Sea - by David Abulafia Far more than merely another history of exploration, The Boundless Sea shows how maritime networks gradually formed a continuum of interaction and interconnection. Working chronologically, Abulafia moves from the earliest forays of peoples taking hand-hewn canoes into uncharted waters, to the routes taken daily by supertankers in the thousands. History on the grandest scale and scope, written with passion and precision, this is a project few could have undertaken. Abulafia, whom The Atlantic calls "superb writer with a gift for lucid compression and an eye for the telling detail," proves again why he ranks as one of the world's greatest storytellers. APRIL SELECTION Moxie: The American Challenge - by Philip S. Weld Chronicles Feld's efforts to win the Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic Race, from his first try, when he found himself becalmed in the Azores, through his capsize and rescue, to his ultimate victory in 1980. MAY SELECTION Come on Shore and We Will Kill and Eat You All - by Christina Thompson Come on Shore and We Will Kill and Eat You All is the story of the cultural collision between Westerners and Maoris, told partly as a history of the complex and violent period of contact between Europeans and the Maoris and partly as the story of Christina Thompson's unlikely marriage to a Maori man. THE NAVIGATOR 19 Poker Pitch The rowdy CCYC poker crowd is off to a raucous start to the 2021 Here are the current top 10 “season” & participation is at an all-time high. With no clear path to resuming Monday night poker at the club in sight, the internet in points earned (5 points warriors are forging ahead with their passion for cards unabated by for 1st, 3 points for 2nd & 2 the rigors of person-to-person contact. In the early going for the 2021 season, the weekly schedule of CCYC tournaments at PokerStars.net has been unchanged from 2020 & the competition has been quite vigorous. Mondays & Wednesdays are reserved for traditional Texas Hold ‘Em while Thursdays & Jack Shirey – 38 points Saturdays continue to be Omaha Hi-Lo. So far 11 players have (only 4x winner so far) already won at least one tournament in 2021 and we haven’t even reached the halfway point of the 2nd month which indicates that Buzz Hattersley – 34 the competition is as robust as ever & anyone can win any night. We keep detailed statistics of our merry little band and in the early Gayle Frank – 32 going it is clear that no one will be running away with the points title any time soon. Marty Mischel – 31 These strange times have also awoken the inner Longfellow of a Jonathan Gold – 27 few of our players who have been inspired to share their rapier wits & boundless humor in the form of poetry. One such master of prose Jon Sinton – 20 is Dr. Jonathan Gold who graced the poker clan with a hilarious poem, roasting us all with a cornucopia of memorable inside jokes Ken Mischel – 16 that wouldn’t make much sense to the average reader. If you would like to venture into the mind of this maniac magician I strongly Don Smith – 15 suggest checking out his YouTube channel (https:// www.youtube.com/channel/UC5aTI8FTXQtzPwgXS4q9AeA/ Andy Garcia – 14 featured) where he does some amazing magic with panache & a unique humor that you won’t want to miss. Ed Noonan – 14 If you are interested in joining our motley crew online, everyone is invited & we’d love to see your virtual face. It’s a great way to hone your poker skills & scratch that competitive itch while still maintaining a safe distance from other human beings. If you are interested, please contact me at mawam01@msn.com or Buzz Expect this list to change Hattersley at buzzhatt@san.rr.com. We can’t wait to resume every week as the season Monday nights at CCYC but until then we will forge ahead with wears on, but congrats to some wholesome online competition. See you at the virtual tables! all on their success up to this point. Happy Sailing & Pokering CCYC’ers! Martin W. Mischel, esq.
