ANNOUNCEMENTS AN INVITATION TO REMEMBER... The convenience and environmental benefits of electronic communication are irrefutable but every once in a while, going old-school can bring so much magic into an invitation or an announcement! For our much-awaited and grand meeting to be held on January 12, 2021, with the RIPN Jennifer Jones - the first ever global woman RI President - that magic was essential, indeed, after an entire year of virtual- everything! So, for this prestigious occasion, Rotary Club of Madras conceptualised and designed an invitation card that was interesting, sleek and quite innovative, cleverly showcasing within its delicately die-cut leaves, a warm invitation and the handshake of friendship and shared goals between the RIPN’s home nation and ours - Canada and India. It was a pleasure, indeed, to receive this invitation in the our brick and mortar mailboxes, rather than email inboxes. A keepsake for sure. And all we have to do to show our delight and appreciation for this fabulous event and attractive invitation is - show up and be involved in what promises to be an most interesting eye-opener of a weekly meeting. SPOTLIGHT ISSUES OF A JUDICIOUS NATURE... We started off the year 2021 on a high note when we had the privilege of being addressed by one of India’s most respected judges, Justice Bellur Narayanaswamy Sri Krishna, the man behind a no. of landmark judgments at all levels of courts in India, and behind a number of Commission Reports that deal with controversies of national interest. This week, though, instead of a report on the talk itself, we will hear from RTN. MANASA PILLAI, who had helped have our speaker onboard; and from our own uber-barrister RTN. SHAAN KATARI LIBBY. A NOTE FROM THE HEART... It all began with a brother of mine (first cousin - my maternal uncle’s son) - Vishnu. After completing B.A. LLB (Hons) at National Law School of India, Bangalore, Vishnu applied for Clerkship with the Supreme Court of India. And he was allotted to Justice Srikrishna. For no good reason except the innate goodness of his heart, Justice Srikrishna lavished a lot of his time and attention on Vishnu and in no time this extended to Justice's wife and mother too. Given Justice's great reputation in India and abroad, his name on Vishnu's CV and recommendation bagged Vishnu the chance to go to Oxford on a Commonwealth Scholarship for a Masters and thereafter to Harvard Law School for a second Masters degree. I don’t know what black magic Vishnu weaved on Justice, but he and his wife came all the way to Harvard University just to attend his graduation ceremony! Vishnu decided to marry a girl in Scotland (probably Justice knew about it even before we did!) and when the decision on wedding ceremonies came up, my mama and mami knew that there was no way Vishnu would agree to any of their suggestions. So we went to the one and only person who could get Vishnu to "...shut up and do as I say". And that's how I saw Justice in “vaadhyar” regalia and officiating priest at the wedding! And that’s where he became my best friend! - RTN. MANASA PILLAI

YOUNG STARS A BUSY END-OF- SEASON As always, the Rotaract Clubs under RCM were bustling with activity toward the end of 2020 and early 2021.
