2019 in Review We started out the season with the Attic Art & Vintage Sale. This fund raiser was a huge success that generated over $4500 to support the 2019 Children’s Art Programming, Arts for Kids. Members and the community generously donated items to sell. People were waiting at the door to shop on opening day. Thanks to the Attic Art event team: Lead - Chris Verdon, Marjorie Farrell, Barbara Waddell, Sharon Kalchik, Linda Bayer and the many Giclee donated by Gene Rantz volunteers that helped with the sale. A Bill Perkins Rocker donor unknown We had a pop up Members Exhibit in June to support the Leelanau Township Community Foundation Open House. Due to the success of our 2018 Photo Exhibit, the 2019 Northport Photo Exhibition was extended to ten days. Over 250 Photographs from 47 amateur and professional photographers were on display. The photos were juried and $700 in awards were presented to seven photographers. The Northport Public School art students were invited to participate and six students submitted a variety of photos. The Northport Arts Association donated the printing and framing of the student photos for display and awarded certificates of participation. The opening reception was well attended by Photographers and guests. The event offered free “Photo Experiences” by several photographers throughout the week. Thanks to the photo event team. This enthusiastic group has put the Northport Photo Exhibit on the map: Linda Bayer, Robert Bayer, Walter Farrell, Sharon Kalchik, Jay Petersen, Esther Send and Sheen Watkins. When the doors of the Village Arts Building opened in the fall of 2016, people began asking when children’s classes would be offered. We have collaborated in the past with the school and the library with exhibits and activities, and offered classes on a limited basis in 2018. In 2019 we offered a full roster of workshops and camps for Village and Leelanau Township kids in age groups of 5 to 8 and 9 to 12 years of age. We are excited by the people who have come forward to teach the classes. They brought years of teaching experience and the joy of sharing that was fun and exciting for the kids while they learned new skills and made new friends. We thank Chris Verdon, Lydia Woodruff, Deb Welty, Kay Pentzien, Tara Stoffel and all involved. 2
The annual Northport Plein Air Paint Out is our biggest and longest running event. It started out very small in 2013 and has grown to be one of the best attended Plein Air events in the region. This two-day event begins with artists checking in on Saturday morning. They are greeted by volunteers that stamp canvases and inform artists about painting locations. Artists return to the Village Arts Building by 4pm on Sunday with fresh, and in some cases, wet paintings ready to hang. Then volunteers get to work - hanging paintings, serving the artists BBQ, setting up the reception food and floral arrangement (which David Chrobak constructs and is a piece of art in itself). When the doors opened at 6pm guests were waiting eagerly to see and buy original art. Over 150 pieces of artwork were exhibited. The exhibit was juried by William Truman Hosner and Gene Rantz with $750 in awards presented to - Cal Kemppainen for Best of Show, Brant MacLean for 1st Place Village Scene, Candance Brancik for 2nd Place Village Scene, Cynthia Yates for 1st Place Countryside, Amy Gamble for 2nd Place Countryside, Cornelius VanSpronsen for 1st Place Water/Dune, David Westerfield for 2nd Place Water/Dune, Mark McHaffey for 1st Place Golden Hour and Paul Tibedeau for 2nd Place Golden Hour. Thanks to the Plein Air Team: Gene Rantz, Linda Bayer, Tom Whitney, Tara Stoffel, Mimi Heberlein and the many volunteers that helped set up and make thie event a success. The 2019 Members Exhibit - Arts of Our Members Annual Exhibit & Sale is always an inspiring event. This is an opportunity for members to take part in exhibiting their work at the Village Arts Building during the summer. We start with a members potluck reception which brings artists together. Then they exhibit is open to the public. This year we continued the exhibit through September. Over 120 pieces of artwork were exhibited by thirty-five artists. Tables at the Tip of the Leelanau Peninsula was the Northport Arts Association mid-summer fund raiser, showcasing one-of-a-kind hand painted tables by local artists. The tables were designed and created using exciting methods, colors and unique schemes. “We are excited so many artists are willing to spend time to paint tables and donate their beautiful work. This important fund raiser helped support the matching percent of the Rotary Seed Grant by raising close to $5000. Thanks to the Tables at the Tip Team: Lead Betsy Ernst, Sandy Dhuyvetter, Lydia Woodruff and Sheen Watkins. The 2019 Leelanau UnCaged was pronounced the “best ever” by founder Andy Thomas. This was also the first year that Sandy Dhuyvetter became Director and George Powell became Chair of the Music Committee. Sandy is on the board of the NAA and serves as Treasurer, both Sandy and George are NAA members. The one day event brought out over 8,000 people who enjoyed over 35 performances, 65 artists and 17 food vendors. The sponsors and volunteers are at the heart of this free festival. 2020 Leelanau UnCaged will be returning Sept 26 for another full day of celebration. 3
The October Anniversary Exhibit is an annual event in honor of the gift of the Village Arts Building from Bill and Nina Collins in October of 2016 to the Northport Community. The 2019 Art Exhibit featured the work of Nina Collins. Members of the Northport Arts Association bring a variety of art in for the exhibit. The exhibit opened with a reception and ran until the end of October. The members consist of artists and supporters of the arts. The art on exhibit ranges from paintings – oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, etc. to sculpture, photography, fiber art and more. We thank Chris Woomer for being our Exhibit Designer for many of our events. Thirty-five artists displayed a total of 137 pieces of artwork. Our ongoing Figure Drawing Studio began on Mondays in November 2019. It’s a great experience with no formal instruction, no pressure and a chance to try your hand at drawing the clothed figure in any medium of your choice. So far the preferred drawing tools have been pencil, charcoal, pastel and watercolor. It’s a really fun group and Members are welcome to drop in on any Monday to participate! (Except on Mondays when there is a NAA members meeting scheduled) During the month of November, NAA members and the community joined together at the Village Arts Building to create Nutcrackers. Village families, NAA Artists, NMC instructors, children from after school care and teens from Peshawbestown came to design and paint. The Northport Arts Association hosted our 3rd Annual Christmas in the Village Artisan Market on November 30th. Over 20 artisans featured fine arts and crafts such as fiber arts, jewelry, photography, paintings, books, soaps, aromatherapy, herbals, ornaments, holiday décor, wood work, upcycled art and more. Shoppers were happy to be greeted with homemade cinnamon pretzels and a warm cup of hot chocolate or tea. We Appreciate Our 2019 Volunteers Volunteers are the heart and soul of non-profit organizations. We are fortunate to have wonderful people involved in the NAA that step up and help when called upon. Please know we appreciate everyone that has helped in every way over the year. We would like to focus on the garden work done in 2019. With a donation from The Little Garden Club, we focused on beautifying the patio area with the purchase of a watering system, clover seed and more. Nance Schuman, Janet Dickerson, Kay Pentzien, and others planted and weeded the patio area throughout the season. Chris Verdon planted the clover seed. Many others donated, planted, helped with spring clean up and kept the garden growing. The patio area looked beautiful all season and we look forward to seeing new growth in 2020. Without our members and volunteers we wouldn’t have a Northport Arts Association. Thanks to each and every one of you who volunteer and pay their dues to support this organization and its mission to bring arts to all. “The Mission of the Northport Arts Association is to foster and promote artistic expression throughout the Northport Community” 4

The camera settings are also very important. Jay will talk about the critical impact of exposure and focus on landscape photos. “My serious interest in photography started with birding, but I later became interested in composition and in photography of other subjects, particularly in an artistic way. I joined a monthly class with a professional photographer whose teaching emphasized composition, shapes, color and texture. I discovered that I really enjoyed cityscape photography and it is still one of my favorites. I especially like the diversity and complexity of images captured in large cities like New York, San Francisco and Chicago, often with the added drama and impact of B&W”. jfpetersen.com https://www.crookedtree.org/artist/jay-petersen 7

Finance Report The NAA is pleased to report a balance budget and in 2019 we have acquired a positive net revenue of over $42,000. This was made possible by the Seed Grant we received from Traverse City Rotary, a MCACA mini grant and generous support of our members and donors. This will help us continue to manage operations as well as offer imaginative classes and engaging events through 2020. Our goal for 2019 was to hire a part -time employee. After several months of posting and searching, we found two wonderful Arts Administrators. Tara Stoffel started working with us in July and Kay Pentzien started in August.
