MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF IAMFA Welcome to the 28th Annual IAMFA Conference at this wonderful time of year in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a cultural landmark and home to some of the best museums and performing art centers in the country. This year’s host, Mike Rogers, and his team have organized an outstanding conference showcasing six of these cultural institutions from across the region. This is not the first time that Los Angeles has hosted IAMFA during its annual conference. We met here last in 2006, and those who attended still talk about the sights and sounds they experienced 12 years ago, from Santa Monica Pier just down the street from our hotel, to the then newly opened Getty Villa in Malibu. You will experience these sites again this year, with the Getty Villa fresh from a recent renovation, to major construction projects at LA County Museum of Art, and a brand new Petersen Automotive Museum. The entire Board of Directors and I are delighted you are here at our 28th IAMFA Conference. Please take in everything that is offered, from the informative benchmarking session on Sunday, through the extra day on Thursday, when you will have an opportunity to see the classical play Bacchae by Euripides in the Getty Villa’s dramatic Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman Theater, an outdoor venue modeled after ancient Greek and Roman theaters. I would like to thank each of our six host museums for opening their doors to our membership, and offering such an informative program. Each day is packed from early in the morning until late at night; we will be on the move touring these fabulous host museums. In addition to the Getty Villa, LACMA, and Petersen Museum mentioned before, we will also visit The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, the Autry Museum of the American West, and the Getty Center. We will hear from staff at each museum about the institution’s general history and major construction projects before touring the museums themselves. I would also like to thank each of our Corporate Sponsors, for without their support, none of this would be possible. We appreciate each and every sponsorship, and this support allows us to keep the quality of our conference high and the cost of registration low. Each of our sponsors is a part of the IAMFA family and, working together, we can accomplish so much more for our membership, while advancing our mission. Delegates and Guests, I hope you are ready for a excellent educational program this year, but first we will kick off the conference with our opening reception Sunday evening at the Annenberg Community Beach House which is literally on Santa Monica Beach. The presentations, tours and activities that are planned will delight and inform every delegate and guest; there is something for everyone in our Conference this year! Everything starts with our opening reception Sunday evening at the Annenberg Community Beach House which is literally on Santa Monica beach. I look forward to visiting with everyone and reconnecting over the next four days. If this is your first IAMFA Conference, please make sure you reach out as I would personally like to say hello and extend a warm welcome to this conference and IAMFA. I am hoping everyone makes the most of this fabulous program and thoroughly enjoys their time in LA. NANCY J. BECHTOL President, IAMFA 2 2 8 T H A NNUA L C O N FEREN C E L O S AN G EL ES, C A 2 0 1 8
WELCOME TO IAMFA LOS ANGELES 2018 It is a great pleasure and honor to extend a warm invitation to the 2018 International Association of Museum Facilities Administrators Conference in Los Angeles. The conference anchor hotel, the Fairmont Miramar, is located on the west side of the city in Santa Monica, overlooking the beach. It’s an ideal location to appreciate the weather and coastline Southern California has to offer, even in September! Los Angeles is an exceptional place for the IAMFA conference. Los Angeles is renowned as one of the world’s most outstanding and diverse cities. Within the texture of a complex and dense urban environment, it is also home to many cultural institutions. Balance is provided by the natural environment, with the Pacific Ocean to the west, the fabulous beaches of Santa Monica and Malibu and to the north, and the Santa Monica Mountains and Angeles National Forest to the east. The theme of this year’s conference is diversity—of location, venue, and experience, in both early and present-day Los Angeles. The conference logo provides a road map of locations that you will visit. Conference hosts at the Getty, The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LAMCA), Petersen Automotive Museum and the Autry Museum of the American West all eagerly await your arrival. You will sample the city and its cultural offerings from the private ambiance of the Getty Villa, near the beach to the Getty Center and perched on top of a hill overlooking the city. With the mid-city area currently experiencing great cultural and building growth, we will spend some time at LAMCA learning about its unique architectural project, and hearing about Southern California car culture at the Petersen Automotive Museum. The Autry is a gem of Western American heritage unique to the region, and will share ways in which it is managing its collections. On the east side of the city, in Pasadena, we will see the grand gardens of The Huntington and enjoy the sunset while enjoying dinner on the outdoor terrace of the original mansion. Our facilities leadership educational program showcases a variety of topics that include an update on the state of collection environmental standards, retrofitting a building automation system in a highrise museum, and the challenges of building new collections storage. We hope you will share and take away both knowledge and memorable experiences. Welcome to Los Angeles! MICHAEL G. ROGERS, AIA IAMFA Los Angeles 2018 Conference Chair 28TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE LOS ANGELES , C A 2 0 1 8 3
