M U S E U M N E WS Haggin in Bloom Haggin In Bloom Sip & Stroll Wednesday, March 20, 2019 Thursday, March 21, 2019 Lecture & Luncheon 10 am – 1 pm 6 – 8 pm $75 per guest $30 per guest O nce again the Haggin Museum will be in full bloom as the ladies of Junior Women’s Group (JWG) present their unique celebration of spring, Haggin In Bloom, on Wednesday and Thursday, March 20 & 21, 2019. The event will include two days of floral delights arranged by area florists and designers that are paired with specific Haggin Museum artwork, such as J.C. Leyendecker’s “Queen of Spring” interpreted by Anna Adams of Huckleberry Blooms and pictured here. Wednesday’s lecture speaker is Dutch-born designer and educator René van Remes. Now a California resident, van Remes is a world-renowned, award-winning ambassador of the floral industry. Educated in floriculture at the prestigious Aalsmeer Floral Institute, The Netherlands, he has led design shows and seminars throughout the US and Canada. His work has been featured in Better Home & Garden, Sunset, and other publications as well as on Home & Garden TV. He is a founding trustee of Institute of Floral Art & Science and lives in San Diego. Van Remes’ presentation is highly visual and energetic and will inspire us to start working on our “inner artist” and see how just a few flowers, or a lot, can positively and dramatically impact our homes. The elegant luncheon will be prepared and served by the ladies of JWG. This event is $75 per person. Thursday’s Sip & Stroll special evening event includes several floral demonstrations, exhibits and tablescapes as well as hors d’oeuvres prepared by JWG and local wines from Weibel Family Winery. Cost of this evening event is $30 per person. Reservations are required for both of these member events. Members, please watch for your invitation in the mail in early February, 2019. The floral arrangements will be on display during the museum’s regular public hours on both dates of Haggin In Bloom events. Regular admission prices apply. S P EC I A L E X H I B I T I O N MICHAEL DOLAS: Capturing the Character of His Country JANUARY 17 − FEBRUARY 24, 2019 When the artist Michael Dolas passed away in 2010 just shy of his 98th birthday, he brought an end to the Golden Age of American Illustration. Its ranks included the likes of J.C. Leyendecker, Norman Rockwell and Dean Cornwell—all of whom influenced Dolas in one way or another during his long career and all of whom he counted among his many friends. The son of Greek immigrants, Dolas was raised in New York and Pennsylvania. After graduating from Syracuse University with a degree in illustration, he settled in New York City and although he began his professional career by painting covers for a number of national magazines, it was the illustrations for the stories that appeared within the magazines’ covers that comprised the majority of his early work. His paintings accompanied stories by writers such as Pearl S. Buck, Ernest Hemingway and Paul Gallico. Dolas’ characters included average Americans in their everyday pursuits—at work and at play. He also was quite accomplished at capturing the grittier side of humanity in his many illustrations for stories of mystery, crime and adventure. Before the war Dolas had utilized photography to help him compose his paintings, and during World War II the US Army took advantage of his photographic expertise. Assigned to the Signal Corps, he spent four years in the Pacific Theatre as a combat photographer, including documenting the landings on Okinawa. Following the war, Dolas returned to New York to resume his career as an illustrator. By this time the demand for magazine illustrations was waning and so Dolas turned his talents to the growing field of advertising art. Soon his illustrations graced the pages of newspapers, magazines and billboards, all helping to sell a variety of products ranging from beer and dairy products to shaving cream and automobiles. In 1955 Dolas and his family moved to California and settled in Santa Barbara. He worked for a major printing company and continued his work as a commercial illustrator into the early 1980s. This exhibition features 30 of Dolas’ paintings, from the late 1930s through the mid-1950s. In addition, 10 Saturday Evening Post cover paintings by J. C. Leyendecker purchased by Dolas directly from the artist are also displayed. The museum’s Board of Trustees and Staff wish to thank Michael Dolas’ daughter and son—Lura Dolas and Theodore Michael Dolas—for generously sharing their father’s works and Leyendecker collection with the Haggin and our visitors. S P EC I A L E X H I B I T I O N Modern Masters January 17 - February 24, 2019 T his engaging exhibition features thirty prints by modern artists from the 1920s through the early twenty-first century and is drawn from the Reading Public Museum’s collection. Early modernists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, join Surrealists Roberto Matta, Salvador Dali, and Pop artist Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring in this fascinating look at works on paper from the twentieth century. Other artists featured in the show include Sam Francis, Donald Judd, Robert Rauschenberg, Mel Ramos, Raphael Soyer, Sonia Delaunay, François Gilot, Alex Katz, and Jim Dine. Artistic movements of the early twentieth century such as Cubism, Fauvism and Expressionism challenged the notion that art needed to “look real.” By the nineteen-teens, artists achieved pure abstraction, reducing forms to expressive lines or blocks of color. Representational or figurative art was largely abandoned in the 40s and 50s, when Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting took the lead as the reigning international styles. In place of naturalism, artists emphasized formal elements such as color and line, infusing their works with emotional content and personal vision. Even as cutting edge art moved toward abstraction, many artists adhered to the human figure and representation in their work. Social Realism, Regionalism, Pop Art and Photorealism continued to enlist the human form as subject matter. Visitors will be able to explore a wide variety of approaches to both the human form and abstraction. Some artists included in the exhibition combine elements of both, while others remain true to nature and to abstraction.
