Due to Kaaren suddenly experiencing an eyesight problem she apologises for being unable to insert her normal column in this issue of Klaxon. She will attempt though to keep everyone in- formed through her BUZZ emails over the next few days I am sure we all wish Kaaren well and hope for a speedy recovery. FEBRUARY END OF MONTH RUN by Ken Frew Our end of month run started off with a bad weather report and not knowing whether to hold it, however at 7.45 a.m. we made the decision to ‘give it a go’. 15 cars and more than 30 members, including 4 of our newest members, met at Pak ‘n’ Save car part at the crossing, Tauriko and received instructions for a half hour country run in the Kaimais and ended up the ‘The Falls Cafe’ in McLaren Falls Park. Most of the group sat outside in beautiful sunshine and enjoyed a delicious brunch with members sit- ting around and chatting and having a great time. Who would take notice of the weather forecast?? Been away lately to a place of interest We would love to see some input from you in the Klaxon. Even photos say a lot on their own. It is your magazine and your contribution will help to make it interesting 8
Your Klaxon Editor is Paul Beck Contact Paul at klaxoninfo@gmail.com or 07 5748482 Hi Everyone, “Wow”. Suddenly February has disappeared and time to get back into Klaxon for the March issue. Like many I have spoken to, the heat of the summer days has been great but at times is just a little much with many of us taking refuge indoors to escape it. Not a lot seems to have happened in our household lately yet some- how the days seemed to roll by so quickly that they just did not quite seem long enough to achieve what I wanted to do. Hopefully this month everything will settle to normal again for both of us but by the look of the club calendar ahead I am not sure normal is going to be the operative word. I have a few great movies lined up for this year and will need a few more as it stands at the moment. However I am not panicking yet as there are a few sources to spy out and they don’t often let me down. It is quite fun to come home armed with a new batch of videos and view them all, and, with the way television is at the moment!!!!!. It seems like TV is a whole new ball game that is fast losing popularity worldwide. “Am I surprised”? “No way”. Just call me old fashioned if you like, but movies are not what they used to be. At our last meeting, Jim again brought up the idea to add the word Classic to our Branch name. I was initially against it last time for the main reason a “Classic” car has no definition that defines it as being such. While that reason has not changed, what has changed is that the word “Vintage” does not fit our Post 60s cars. Our cars are getting more modern and up until now they have been known as a division or class of Vintage. It is time to update and modernize our name so that these cars are more defined correctly and perhaps call them “Classic” and while there is still no proper definition it does correctly fit what the general public perceive the cars to be. This is important. I do believe though that Vintage should precede Classic in our name. In my mind that is quite important. I am sure a lot of discussion will be generated on this topic before we get to voting on it but move with the times we must do. In many cases a change of name makes little difference but over a period, every little bit helps for the Club to survive. It more than likely will have a doubtful future if we doggedly plod on doing the same old thing year after year. It is time to modernize. Also as we get nearer we need to start thinking of our office bearers. A few are due to retire this year for various reasons and we need some fresh thinking. A bit of thought needs to be generated and people approached now rather than the usual last minute approach. I am sure there are members out there who wouldn't mind taking on a task but if they are approached at the last minute will probably de- cline. But with a little nurturing will accept a position and later maybe even thank you. It is rewarding to have completed a task then to see others who have enjoyed the fruits of your labour. A bit of talk has been filtering around about the Art Deco and the Whangamata events but nobody has submitted an article on either. I would like to remind many of our members who do overseas or even local trips that we would like to hear about it. You all like to hear of others “BUT” what about yours. Even a short piece in a hand written note is fine with me. It is not hard and every bit helps. The magazine is only as good as the articles that are in it. Remember it is your Club and it is only as good as your contribution makes it. All for now, Paul All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. 9

Book Review by Paul Beck Have you ever been down the South Island and around the glaciers and Mt Cook region. The helicopters and planes buzzing around are so numerous that at times you wish they would just go away. And also wondered how the ski resort at the hermitage developed to a world famous facility. Two books are in our Library that reflect on the history of the Mount Cook region and of the pioneers that made it all what it is today written by Harry Wigley. While I have reviewed these books before I feel they are well worth another. The Mount Cook Way Harry Wigley, the son of Rodolph Wigley, for 60 years had been hearing tales of the pioneers of the Mount Cook Company so decided to write a book to record the first 50 years of the company. Much of the story involves the Mount Cook Hermitage and its development. While the Hermitage was owned by the Tourist Corporation it was only open during the summer months as a tourist destination for climbers. Rodolph Wigley ran a coach service to the Hermitage from Fairlie. As most of the tourists came from Timaru they had to travel from there to Fairlie by train. From there by coach to Pukaki then to the Hermitage, a journey of three days. The first coach to reach the Hermitage was driven by John Rutherford who later along with Rodolph Wigley, drove one of the first two De Dion motor cars to reach Mount Cook in 1906. Wigley then realizing the journey was feasible from Timaru to the Hermitage in one day instead of three, then developed a bus service using 25 and 40hp Darracq cars, however to make it feasible needed more tourists. He realized the potential of developing the area as a ski resort so managed to persuade the Tourist Corp. to lease the Hermitage to him. The story is a great history of the development of tourism and ski-ing of the Mount Cook area along with how the Mount Cook Company developed and almost went broke several times. It also describes the problems the NZ Govt. had to fully understand the potential of tourism in NZ and how he had to fight hard against almost crazy decisions made by the Tourist ministers of the time. Ski-Plane Adventure Harry Wigley had an ambition since being a schoolboy in 1920 that one day he would like to fly. Spending a lot of time at Mount Cook in the school holidays climbing and ski-ing prompted an idea that he could own his own aeroplane and make it pay for itself by taking tourists to ski-fields on Mount Cook. As his father Rodolph was a director of the Mount Cook Transport Company which later purchased the lease of the Mount Cook Hermitage the idea began during his school years until he eventually persuaded his father to purchase an Auster air- craft and he obtained his pilot’s license. The plane was initially used to take tour- ists for joyrides as at that stage landing on snow had not been done in New Zea- land. Then the war intervened and put a stop to all that. During the war Harry joined the RNZAF as a flying instructor and wound up as a Wing Commander. After the war he rejoined the Mount Cook Co. with his father, however his father died soon after. The idea was still there however to take tourists to the snowfields. Eventually the 13
idea was worked on and retractable skis were made to fit the Auster aircraft ena- bling the plane to land on snow or an airfield. After extensive trials, approval was given to enable them to start taking passengers. This was a first for New Zealand. The rest becomes history as the company later purchased DC3’s and a fleet of small aircraft tackling all sorts of duties such as poisoning rabbits for DOC., tramping, skiers to the snowfields, transport of goods, and anything that can be done with an aircraft. This along with one of the largest transport and tourist com- panys in NZ. His son later obtained his Pilots license and flew tourists to the Ski-fields as well. This book goes in hand with the Mount Cook way by the same author and both books are a joy to read on the early history of NZ. Both books are available in the club library. Happy reading, Paul Important notice to all BOP members If you require a hard copy OF KLAXON please follow the below directions. Helping you with Klaxon changes - by Paul Beck For those receiving Klaxon on line only it is very easy to print off the EVENTS PAGES AND RUN INSTRUCTIONS without printing the whole magazine. This will make a big saving of your printing costs. While many members do know how to do this, the instruction is for those that do not. Take note of which pages you would like. (The pages are numbered at the bottom) Usually the events pages are on pages 4 and 5. You may also wish to print Kaarens report usually on pages 7,8,9 HOLD DOWN THE CTRL KEY AND TAP P. Then let the CTRL key go. (Control print tells the computer that you wish to print) A menu will appear on the left and there is normally a box in the menu that says Print the whole thing (or similar wording). BELOW THAT BOX IS ANOTHER that will say page numbers or similar wording. IN THE PAGE NUMBER BOX, TYPE IN YOUR PAGE NUMBERS AND SEPARATE EACH NUMBER WITH A COMMA AND NO SPACES So it should look like this. 4,5,7,8,9 If your printer is able to print double sided TICK THE PRINT BOTH SIDES BOX Your paper size is normally A4 and normally the printer is set for that You are ready to print. PRESS PRINT. Enjoy the rest of Klaxon on line. If you want to print off consecutive pages, instead of separating the page numbers with a Comma, put a dash instead of a comma, so it should look like this 4-19. The printer will print off pages 4 to 19 The instructions may differ slightly between different brands of printers or programs but most are fairly similar and should not cause you much difficulty. However should you experience difficulty. Give Paul a call 07 5748 482 15
Are those Electric cars as clean as you believe? - by Paul Beck While reading the latest mag from the federation of motoring I came across this snippet of information which has answered a couple of my questions regarding the use of electric cars. The spin the public is being fed is only partially true. While the electric car may well be clean when running, it is in the manufacture of the batter- ies that is not widely known. The article does reflect on that and gives figures stat- ing the harm being done. However on top of that is the environmental impact on the mining of Lithium as well. You only need to do a bit of Googling and it can be found that huge areas of land are being mined for the material. And that situation will become worse as manufacturing ramps up to produce not only the electric car but all those battery powered devices. Just think of how islands disappeared and areas were destroyed while mining phosphates for fertilizer and how those commu- nities were destroyed in the process. If you can, then you are partway there. So yes. The cars are clean emission but the cost to get there is being hidden. Also I have yet to see how a lithium battery is disposed of after it has reached its useful life. Are we heading to another type of atomic waste disposal type scenario where nobody wants it. This combined with disposal of the plastic cases the batter- ies are contained in and the mind goes crazy. I have copied the article for your interest from the Federation of Motoring mag. “To achieve net zero carbon emissions converting New Zealand’s vehicle fleet to 95 per cent electric is the proposed goal in the discussion documents. But various research studies have shown lithium ion batteries are also a major source of CO2. Just the manufacturing of the 100kWh battery for a Tesla creates 17.5 tones of CO2 or more than would be produced by an average New Zealand petrol-fueled vehicle being driven for nearly 100,000kms or approximately eight years. If the useful life of lithium ion batteries continues to be only two to three years, requiring private vehicle owners to replace their Suzuki Swifts or Toyota Corollas or cher- ished classics with Nissan Leafs or Teslas could effectively more than double the actual CO2 emissions generated by many of those vehicle users. Electric vehicle manufacturing technology still requires significant further development before af- fordable batteries of adequate capacity for longer distances are widely available. Until then, in many instances, any legislated form of enforced conversion to electric vehicles could have the unintended effect of significantly increasing worldwide CO2 emissions. Despite the determination of our Climate Change Minister the apparent impracticality of replacing the nearly four million internal combustion vehicles in the New Zealand fleet with electric-powered alternatives by 2050 would seem to be insurmountable. With around 12,000 electric vehicles on the road to date and new or used fossil-fueled imports being introduced at around 300,000 a year it would take a much greater economic upheaval than has even been outlined in the discus- sion documents to achieve anywhere near the net zero carbon target by 2050.” Also a small snippet of information of interest in the same magazine. “On the Government agenda this year is the previously postponed revision of the Incorporated Societies Act. Dropped from the Parliamentary calendar with the change of government a similar Incorporated Societies Bill is projected to appear on the Order Paper during the next parliamentary session. Following up on our previous submissions the FOMC will be seeking to ensure none of the provisions in the new Act will place unnecessary or excessively onerous requirements on those clubs which are incorporated societies. As well as the above pending piece of legis- lation another issue the FOMC will be working on the year ahead will be reducing the age of vintage classification vehicles from 40 to 30 years and increasing the WoF period from six months to one year.” Both of these items will come up eventually, if not already in our VCC discussion, I am sure. While us mortals don’t seem to be privy to this information, I am sure when it does affect us we will be told.. # 16
