Secondary Co-curricular Activities At Matthew Flinders Anglican College, we recognise character, contribution, academic excellence and leadership as key components of The Flinders Way. As a result, our extensive co-curricular program is offered as an integral part of the Flinders curriculum from Prep to Year 12. The Secondary School offers students a range of the co-curricular activities for the students to be involved in each year. The following pages of the guide lists the cultural, music, service and sport activities that are expected to be offered in the Secondary School in 2021. The College strongly encourages students to become involved in at least one activity, but asks that students conversely do not become too involved to the detriment of their studies, nor their ability to fully commit to any activity. College Facilities Performance Centre The Flinders Performance Centre is a state-of-the-art performing arts centre offering a variety of spaces and accommodates the Music and Drama Departments for the College. The Performance Centre is also home to the new Production Co-curricular program, which is under the umbrella of Flinders Creative Arts. As well as offering a space for many other College activities including assemblies, awards nights, and dinners, Flinders Performance Centre is also available for hire by the wider Community. Sport Facilities There are many quality sports facilities on campus to enable students to pursue their sporting hobbies, improve their fitness and skills, and learn through the Health & Physical Education curriculum including two floodlit ovals incorporating 3 football fields and 2 cricket pitches with a club house, a two- court indoor Sports Centre, four floodlit tennis courts, fitness centre and two multi-purpose covered courts. The Flinders Aquatic Centre provides a Learn-to-Swim program as well as a quality 25-metre 8-lane heated outdoor pool. The Centre plays host to College swimming carnivals, Health & Physical Education swim lessons, Water Polo training and matches, and more. Secondary Co-curricular Activities Cultural and Service Activities By encouraging our students to participate in a diverse range of experiences, our College community strives to nurture our students’ personal development and wellbeing as well as provide opportunities for our students to explore their skills, passions and potential. The benefits of our co-curriculum are extensive, including to develop character and leadership traits such as teamwork, confidence, self-esteem, perseverance, planning, learning to cope with success, disappointments and failures, and of course, to simply have fun. Our Cultural and Service activities include Chapel, Interact, Environment Club, French Club, and Writer’s Group are amongst many others that Flinders students are able to join whilst being an active member of the College community.
Secondary Co-curricular Activities Music Flinders appreciates that children who study music have been shown to think more clearly and concisely, have advanced motor skills, do better at maths and science and have an enhanced sense of health and wellbeing. Being part of an ensemble promotes discipline and focus, improves communication skills and helps instil an exemplary work ethic, while building strong and satisfying friendships. More importantly, music is fun and students at Flinders are thrilled to find their niche, whether as part of a class lesson or a competitive unit. Music is offered to students as an elective in the Secondary School. Students also invited to join one of the College’s ensemble, bands, or vocal choirs with the option of one-one studio teaching also available. Sport Played competitively or recreationally, sport is integral to the co-curricular experience at Flinders – helping students grow in confidence through perseverance, resilience, teamwork and leadership, celebrating success and dealing with disappointment. Our students excel as teams and individuals, with championship titles in many sports in recent years , including Athletics, Basketball, Netball, Volleyball, Water Polo, ESports, Cross Country, Cricket, Rugby and AFL. The schools competition that the College teams participate in include the Sunshine Coast Independent School Sports Association (SCISSA) as well as the Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Basketball, Rugby, Netball and Water Polo Associations. Opportunities for inter-school sporting fixtures are also facilitated through state associations for Tennis, Cricket, Hockey, Touch Football, Australian Football, Rugby 7s, Rowing, Sailing, Netball and Basketball. Our world-class Directors of Coaching encourage our students to participate in sport and reach their potential. The Directors of Coaching also provide support to the many teachers-in-charge of sport and parents who volunteer as coaches and managers across the various sporting teams and affiliated Flinders Clubs. The focus at Flinders is for every student to feel supported to have a go at their chosen sports and to develop characteristics such as determination, resilience and sportsmanship. If you have any questions, please visit the Secondary Sports Office located in the Sports Centre or email our Head of Sport, Mr Adam Ridgewell (aridgewell@mfac.edu.au) or Kelli Skoda (kskoda@mfac.edu.au). The following pages detail the activities that we expect to be available in 2021. Please contact the Teacher in Charge at the College if you are interested in obtaining further details about any of the activities offered.
