Motorrad, a treatise www.bmwocsa.org.au Elecktrick theory according to the Quantum Mechanic. Hello Brian, this is a rough draft , if you reckon it has some merit then some editor magic might be required. There is a rude word that sensitive types can substitute as they need. I didn’t change any names, no one is innocent. John McLarty There are herds of pollitically correct, new age, wannabe born again vegans out there bleating about electric vehicles being the future of personal transport. Our bikes have run on electricity for near a hundred years. Electric spark ignites the compressed air / fuel mixture that gets our enginews making happy sounds after said engines have had their cranks turned by electric starters supplied by batteries, that store (you guessed right) electricity. This, dear readers, is the BMWOCSA-2020 Golden Pen and if this Pen can’t finish what the found pencil above (that I may or may not have pickpocketted) began, then fuck it, it can’t be done. Now, where was l? Oh yes, about to rave about the activities of sub atomic particles. In a Harley, the electrons boot scoot around, whereas in OUR bikes it’s that funny lederhosen spanking dance with an oompah band keeping a dulcet rhythm. Elecktrickery is mostly intangible but we know it exists by the work it can do and we tend not to think about it until that work is not done, and for you lush BMW has plans for electric motorcycles, but budget types with late model fuel injected so far are only building solo motorcycles, as in bikes there is also electronics at work in the built for one person only, with no luggage carry- Electronic Control of Engine Management ing ability. :-( Designed by cardrivers l guess. The battery is pretty much the heart of your bike’s electric system, storing power for distribution as required, and here again, it gets elusive. You can’t tip the electricity into a graduated beaker or onto your powder scales to see how much of it you’ve got. The difficulty is cleared when you accept that the electric systems on our bikes work by magic and, any day now, those pollitically correct new age wannabe born again vegans will saddle up their unicorns and ride off into the rainbows. November m/w ride Fear and Loathing by Stephen MUTTON, November 2020 Way back, when Peter Richards and I were riding observed trials, our Club hosted a rally at Kapunda, by the old reservoir. I had the job of setting an observed trials course that road bikes could do, for the braver of the rally riders. Lee McPeake was one who had a go, on his black R100S. He did a great job but, on one slippery section, he slid forward and was caught before falling. Ray POTTER was scoring and it looks like Tom Griffin did the catching. One can see the loose dirt on the slope behind Lee and so the slope was not easy. That was also the year that the orange-seated GS model was introduced. We even had one at the rally so that riders could test ride it. I remember taking it out along the dirt road and onto the dam wall. It was exciting but I enjoy bitumen even more and so kept my R90S, for the time being. Early this year I was out riding alone, just mooching along in the hills. I have often just wandered on dirt roads to see where they emerge. Eventually I had a series of roads that I hooked together with some winding bitumen, set the course onto paper and made it a route with written directions, red and black arrows, for a slow Club day. There are many in the Club who have a fear and loathing of dirt. Understandable on a road bike that costs the Earth and may be a bit fragile. At this November Wednesday ride I handed out the maps. John Cameron and Mark Fiora have recently bought GS bikes and I knew that they were keen. Gerry Gennikas was less confident but Brian VOGT showed intense displeasure, saying that we could go by ourselves. The ride was a goer and John led us from the Tower Hotel to Strathalbyn on bitumen. Brian had come with us this far. There is a bakery across the road from the toilets. Chat. Phone calls as we all found out about the Covid restrictions coming into effect that night. Mark had business to arrange to keep his factory going and a load of bricks cooked and cooled properly. This took some time. Firstly it was decided that I would lead, using corner markers, rather than tape instructions to fuel tanks. Old Bull Creek Road is excellent, 10 Flatchat December 2020 BMWOCSA
November m/w ride hard dirt but we kept the speed right down to lessen the dust. Keeping to about 60kph we wound down valleys and over hills, finally doing a sharp right turn as the road joined Paris Creek Road. Brian Vogt corner marked here. At the next left turn, onto Bull Creek Road, there is a difficult intersection where turning left, on the bitumen, is exceedingly sharp and so vision is also restricted of vehicles on the right. Instead there is a little section that veers left at a tiny fork, providing a more secure and much safer left turn. This is where I placed the corner marker, Mark. Unfortunately Gerry took the right fork and had a devil of a time turning left, overbalanced at walking pace and had the bike topple onto his left foot, trapping it. John was behind but it is too steep to park and so it was up to car drivers to jump out and help Gerry get upright again, before anyone could get a photograph. His left, steel- cap boot had a chunk taken out of it but Gerry was unhurt. Pride dented we sent off again and delighted in the curves of Bull Creek Road for the next twenty kilometres. Onto Nangkita Road the surface is smooth. At the end of a long curve the intersection to Enterprise Road caught me by surprise and I had to double back, to leave a corner marker. Eventually we got onto Yundi Road which is still bitumen and narrow- just right. Soon we got to the intersection with Victor Harbor Road and I waited. John and Mark turned up but Gerry and Brian had called it quits, waving us on. Back at that fall I had corner marked and gone on, turning back soon to see that all were on their bikes and apparently waiting for me. I led off and enjoyed the curves, as one does, not knowing that two had left the group. Once we had chatted and decided to go on, the trio took range Road West, this time on dirt. I was careful for a while but, with two GS bikes behind I began to enjoy. Eventually I had to brake going into a curve, found that it was gravelly after-all, and slid to a halt, upright. Still, the road was enjoyable and I did it again before we veered left down the hill to Paiges Flat Road. As it was lunch time when we regrouped at Hindmarsh Tiers Road we decided to go into Myponga but the only café open had only one pie, not enough. Back to Hindmarsh Tiers Road and right turn again onto Springmount Road that weaves up and down hills on bitumen but turns to dirt on James Track. Again, hard roads with firm tops. Along Bald Hills Road the views were long and glorious and then we dropped into the valley and got to Yankalilla where the bakery was open and the carpark full of shoppers who were lined up for one hundred metres by the supermarket, buying toilet paper etc. Lunch. Chat. Phone calls. Covid scare. Mark and John decided not to continue up and over to Myponga Beach on the dirt roads as they had to get back to sort out the closures and restrictions. Instead we took the very good valley road and the last I saw of them was as they turned onto Pages Flat Road again. I had enjoyed myself immensely, as had John and Mark, ctd p12 BMWOCSA Flatchat December 2020 11

They had not enjoyed the one section from Strathalbyn. Three out of five is a pass mark. I had an immensely enjoyable day and Gerry explained, later over the phone, that he was uninjured but glad that no one had a photograph of him under his bike, with car drivers aiding him. It was not the dirt that caused his undoing. Maybe I shall do the ride again, with others or alone. Lee McPeake would ride the dirt if he were there, obviously.
