President’s Message

have returned rested, rejuvenated, and ready for some AWA fun. I’d also like to extend a warm
welcome to any new members. Whether you are new to Singapore or simply new to AWA, I
hope you find friendship, fun, and fulfillment through your AWA membership.

To start the new year with a bang, I am thrilled to announce that we are resuming AWA Foreign
Tours this year! Foreign Tours have been enormously popular in the past and it is very exciting
Rohita Rajkumar to be able to re-introduce them as an AWA activity. Our first tour, to Laos, is scheduled for
March 2018, and our second tour to Inacraft in Jakarta will take place in April. Registration
for both tours is now open, so check your calendars and get signed up! Thank you so much
to Lorraine Hadley and Cyndy O’Connor who have volunteered to organize our Foreign Tours
in the first half of 2018. Look for details on these Foreign Tours in this issue of the Bamboo
Telegraph, or visit the AWA website.

Also back by popular demand is the AWA-mazing Race. On February 3, travel around Singapore
and test your street smarts, intellect, physical prowess, and gastronomic bravery. Spouses and
guests are welcome and encouraged at this event! Challenges are top secret and are sure to be
fun and memorable. Gather your team of 6 and sign up now!

Looking ahead, be sure to mark your calendar for our annual Arts and Culture week, taking
place from March 12-16. Every year, our dedicated Arts and Culture committee showcases a
different Asian country for a week. This year, we will explore Singapore through a selection
of activities, talks, and tours highlighting Singapore’s diverse cultural offerings. Whether you
attend all of the week’s events or simply pick a few, you’re sure to gain a new appreciation for
Singapore’s rich artistic history and traditions.

Arts and Culture week will conclude on March 16 with our Night at the Races, Singapore-style.
Break out your sari, kebaya, or cheongsam (or cocktail attire) and try your luck at the Singapore
Turf Club for an evening of horse racing. In addition to the excitement on the track, the evening
will also feature a delicious Singaporean dinner, so be sure to ‘chope’ your spot on the AWA
                                             website under Events.

With so much to choose from, I look forward to seeing you at one of our events very soon!

A Creepy Crawly Good Time was had by all when AWA Singapore hosted a giant activity room at the government-

                                                  50 Dunlop Street 209379

Newly arrived Aussie friends asked us to take them to Mustafa
Centre along with a request to indulge in a biryani dinner first - one
wouldn’t want to shop at Mustafa hungry. In most cuisines there is
a dish that is made with “rice and something”, like arroz con pollo,
paella and risotto. Biryani would be the South Asian equivalent
originating with Muslims in South Asia, generally made with rice &
spices with a protein. “Biryani” is a Persian word from Urdu, and
“Bismillah” is an Arabic phrase that means “In the name of God”.

CHOMP: You can find biryani in many places in Singapore, where
the local version is usually drenched with gravy. Bismillah’s is dry
and has signs on the wall saying so. And why would you need it
after all? This biryani focuses on the quality of the rice and the
slow cooking with cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, cumin
and coriander. The rice comes heaping on a plate with a yogurt
cucumber sauce on the side. Rice usually accompanies the main dish,
but in this case, the standout is the rice and the meat or fish is the
acompaniment! Choices include chicken ($8.50), lamb shank ($20), kid goat ($15), fish and vegetables. Finish the meal
with a rich and tasty kulfi (ice cream). Arrive early or items may be sold out.

AMBIENCE: Decor and ambience would need to be a low priority, and ceiling fans must suffice. If you are looking
for a more modern and air conditioned eatery, Bismillah has an outlet around the corner at 53 Jalan Besar.

SERVICE & CLIENTELE: You order and pay at the cashier in front, and water is self-service. The clientele appeared to
be mostly local male friends and couples, with a spattering of non-locals here and there.

RANT & RAVE: Decor very dated and can get hot, but the slow-cooked rice and flavors are gratifying.

ADVENTURE LEVEL: High, if unaccustomed to this cuisine and hole-in-the wall eateries.

WHAT IS ORANGETHEORY FITNESS????

Orangetheory Fitness is a 1 hour, Full-Body Workout that focuses on Endurance Strength and/or Power. Half of the
workout is Cardio and the other half is Strength. Everyone wears a heart rate monitor where the real-time results are up
on large screens throughout the studio for you and your coach to see.

Orangetheory is science based, and that science tells us that if we can get your heart rate in the “Orange zone” (84-91% of
your maximum heart rate) for just 12- 20 minutes in the one hour workout, the results are amazing! Fair warning though, you
may experience continuous calorie afterburn for up to 36 hours post exercise! Sound like something you would be interested
in? GREAT!!! Come and join the rest of the AWA ladies for a complimentary workout and experience the Orange Effect!!
