Whether you attend all of the week’s events or simply pick a few, you’re sure to gain a new appreciation for Singapore’s rich artistic history and traditions. Arts and Culture week will conclude on March 16 with our Night at the Races, Singapore-style. Break out your sari, kebaya, or cheongsam (or cocktail attire) and try your luck at the Singapore Turf Club for an evening of horse racing. In addition to the excitement on the track, the evening will also feature a delicious Singaporean dinner, so be sure to ‘chope’ your spot on the AWA website under Events. COMMUNITY Community Service SERVICE Volunteering at Mt Elizabeth Hospital Come join AWA’s longest standing community service opportunity at Mt. Elizabeth hospital. Mt Elizabeth hospital sees many patients who are not residents of Singapore and therefore don’t have the support of family or friends to visit them while hospital bound. As a volunteer at Mt. Elizabeth Hospital, you will be able to offer your company, magazines/books for patients to read or just a friendly hello to say you are here and thinking of them. If visiting the hospital is not an option, you can also provide support by donating magazines or books to patients. How do the visitations work? Each visit takes up to 2 hours and either begin at 9:45am or 2:00pm. As a new volunteer, you will be trained by an experienced volunteer on your first few visits and always have the option to sign up with another volunteer for your shift. It’s up to you how often you volunteer, but at least one visit a month is recommended. Visits are usually scheduled for the 2nd two weeks of each month. Volunteering with Mt Elizabeth or any of the other community services programs is a great opportunity to give back and meet other like-minded AWA members. How to sign up/get involved? If you’re interested in being trained as a new volunteer or if you have magazines or books to donate, please email Kady at mounte@awasingapore.com. 6 WWW.AWASINGAPORE.ORG Bamboo Telegraph Jan/Feb 2018
A Creepy Crawly Good Time was had by all when AWA Singapore hosted a giant activity room at the government- organized Halloween celebration this past October 28th. Thousands of children came through with their families, enjoying spider-themed crafts, games and treats. Leading up to the big night, AWA members did a fantastic job creating the games and decorating the room. Then, together with the help of several spouses and Girl Scout Troops 10 and 63, AWA did a Community Service great job managing the activities and the traffic flow throughout the four hour event. Big shout out of thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this happen, and to the event organizers from Tanjong Pagar GRC and Radin Mass SMC for including AWA Singapore in this fabulous community event. Because it is so efficient, and so quick, we never have the chance to just … explore. If you’re like me, whether we’re heading out on a trip, or arriving back home, we’re always in such a rush to get through Changi as quickly as possible, we’re not taking advantage of all that it has to offer. So, I offer this suggestion for the next time you’re flying out on holiday: Go Early. Not just the usual 90 minutes early, and not even the better-safe-than-sorry two hours early. I mean, go four hours early – or even more. Seriously. There is so much to see and do, I guarantee you won’t regret it. kids can get creative, and large, well-maintained indoor playgrounds where they can burn off energy before your First, a caveat: Call ahead to make sure your airline allows flight. But that’s really just the tip of the iceberg early check-in at all. So, confirm that first. (which reminds me – Changi is well air conditioned, so bring a sweater). Each terminal also has its own unique offerings. Assuming you are able to And these are why you need to get to the airport early… spend some time before your flight, there is so much Terminal 1 to see and do in the transit areas of every terminal. All You might start your time in Terminal 1 at the Social Tree, a four terminals have amazing 9 meter-high interactive media installation, where you can Duty Free shopping, with snap a photo at one of eight photo booths, decorate and over 180 luxury brands edit it, then send it up the tree to be digitally displayed. Terminal 3 also has its very own movie theatre, so if you have a few hours to kill, start there for sure. Its other Expat Adventures Terminal 2 big attraction is the Butterfly Garden, which is pretty spectacular. It contains over 1,000 butterflies, which will flutter right into your hand if you stand still. Down on the basement level, you’ll find a cute little Kids’ Reading Corner, stocked with children’s books, for a screen-free break for the kiddos. Finally, the “Going Home” sculpture may not be as exciting as a movie theatre, but it’s an impressive work of art evoking that comforting sense of being homeward bound. It’s a moving piece for those of us living a somewhat transient life. Terminal 4 Brand new Terminal 4, which opened in October 2017, is admittedly not as action-packed as its older siblings, but it is bright and beautiful and insanely efficient. In fact, it’s To start out with, Terminal 2 has a rooftop Sunflower almost entirely automated, from check-in to boarding, Garden, and - though I might be getting too old to use this thanks to cutting-edge facial recognition technology. THE FORK AND CHOPSTICK The Fork and Chopstick Mission: To highlight the off the beaten path, heritage, or just plain fun chomping grounds By Jenni & Eric Lee Bismillah Biryani Restaurant 50 Dunlop Street 209379 Newly arrived Aussie friends asked us to take them to Mustafa Centre along with a request to indulge in a biryani dinner first - one wouldn’t want to shop at Mustafa hungry. In most cuisines there is a dish that is made with “rice and something”, like arroz con pollo, paella and risotto. Biryani would be the South Asian equivalent originating with Muslims in South Asia, generally made with rice & spices with a protein. “Biryani” is a Persian word from Urdu, and “Bismillah” is an Arabic phrase that means “In the name of God”. CHOMP: You can find biryani in many places in Singapore, where the local version is usually drenched with gravy. Bismillah’s is dry and has signs on the wall saying so. And why would you need it after all? This biryani focuses on the quality of the rice and the slow cooking with cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, cumin and coriander. The rice comes heaping on a plate with a yogurt cucumber sauce on the side. Rice usually accompanies the main dish, but in this case, the standout is the rice and the meat or fish is the acompaniment! Choices include chicken ($8.50), lamb shank ($20), kid goat ($15), fish and vegetables. Finish the meal with a rich and tasty kulfi (ice cream). Arrive early or items may be sold out. AMBIENCE: Decor and ambience would need to be a low priority, and ceiling fans must suffice. If you are looking for a more modern and air conditioned eatery, Bismillah has an outlet around the corner at 53 Jalan Besar. SERVICE & CLIENTELE: You order and pay at the cashier in front, and water is self-service. The clientele appeared to be mostly local male friends and couples, with a spattering of non-locals here and there. RANT & RAVE: Decor very dated and can get hot, but the slow-cooked rice and flavors are gratifying. ADVENTURE LEVEL: High, if unaccustomed to this cuisine and hole-in-the wall eateries. REVIEWS: 3.5/5 stars on Yelp and 4.5/5 on Foodpanda. Listed in Michelin Bib Gourmand Singapore 2017. Lonely Planet wrote: “best biryani and kebabs this side of Bay of Bengal.” PRE/POST MEAL: Pub grub and drinks at Prince of Wales pub down the street. Friendly place to have happy hour drinks and beer while waiting for late friends. HONORABLE MENTION: Nearby is The Indian Heritage Museum, which showcases the heritage of the Indian and South Asian diaspora in this region. And Finally Mustafa Centre. What can you say about a store that sells everything and is open 24 hours a day? Our favorite area is the enormous spice section and there’s even an entire department devoted to flashlights. You name it you can find it there! Bamboo Telegraph Jan/Feb 2018 WWW.AWASINGAPORE.ORG 19
