TOPICS OF INTEREST PARACHUTES FOR AIRMEN AND PIGEONS IN WORLD WAR II In last months’ magazine article ‘Animals in War Memorial Service ‘, I mentioned Phyllis Rowland, who lives on East Avenue, and her involvement in making the parachutes for the boxes that contained the Carrier Pigeons which were sent to Europe and dropped behind enemy lines. Phyllis came from the East End of London, and from an early age developed a gift for sewing which led to her moving to Nottingham to become a seamstress in her late teens. However, with the advent of War she wanted to do something for the War effort and on returning home to London, for a Christmas Holiday, heard of a company in Woking who were making more money, due to having to pay for parachutes for the Airforce. She applied lodgings”. for a job there and was accepted. This Amazingly they did receive a rise and meant taking lodgings in the YWCA. Phyllis was promoted. Her first placement was in the section The girls were allowed to buy offcuts of that made the heavy duty suits for the the silk, and this they dyed and made into airmen, which contained their parachutes skirts, blouses and petticoats, and one (made of silk) and it was here that she even made a wedding dress. However, she “ My Mother never knew what I was up and the other girls in this section were to or where I was” she says, but as with finding it difficult to live on their wages, many others she made the best of those and having to pay for lodgings, so Phyllis, terrible years. “I always wanted to be all 5ft of her, organised a strike for better rich, but not famous” she says “instead I pay, telling the girls on a particular day, became poor and infamous”. TOPICS OF INTEREST VILLAGERS’ CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS’ EVE CELEBRATIONS We enjoyed a great evening with a wonderful spread of food. The music was good and we all enjoyed the evening very much. NEW YEARS’ EVE PARTY This was a resounding success. Again, there were some empty seats, but this time the weather played a large part as well as the flu doing the rounds. For the ticket price of £2, to have a live band and room on the floor to dance it was marvellous. A good evening enjoyed by everyone. A lovely table of food provided by ourselves made a good supper. Definitely to be repeated was the overall comment by many villagers. VOLUNTEERING ROOM TO REWARD Rick Rouse is one of our Volunteer Drivers here at Whiteley Village and over the last 12 months he has supported our in-house driving service by taking residents on trips inside and outside the village. This has enabled people who are otherwise isolated due to illness, age or frailty to access services. We are able to call on Rick to volunteer for us at short notice and he is always willing to help. He recently went out of his comfort zone to drive several groups of villagers to see the Christmas lights in London and without Rick and Peter’s support we couldn’t have achieved this. We were delighted to be able to offer him a Room to Reward certificate and night away to thank him for all his voluntary support. Laura Cole, Volunteer Co-ordinator MAKE A DIFFERENCE AWARD including helping with planting, edging pathways, cutting back hedges and tidying villager gardens as well as some administration work and village surveys (counting lamp posts and marking bench locations).
