Be bowled over with fun and friendship at MBBC The pre-Christmas league at Mairangi Bay Bowling Club was a huge success late last year with 26 teams of four players participating. The Club organises two leagues of social bowls for non-bowling club members every season, with leagues played over six weeks in November and February. Whilst the emphasis is on having fun and enjoying the social occasion with other locals, because it is a sport, there is always the desire to win and a competitive edge soon develops, particularly as skill levels improve with time and practice. Finals night is divided into three or four divisions with the finishing order based on play in the preceding five weeks determining which division teams play in. Dolls with Bowls was the overall winning team and (l-r) Louise Rogers, Kath Lindsay, Bev Jamieson and Pam O’Connor were delighted to show off their trophy. The club always welcomes new players either as full playing members or social members. A few years ago, Amanda Turner got to NEW GARDEN? do what others can only dream about; she ditched the corporate ladder to follow her passion – gardening. NEWHAVEN Originally from the UK, she arrived here in 2003 and found work as an underwriter for mortgage lenders and then re- insurance. But it is the smell of freshly turned earth that really excites her, and after completing a Horticultural course in 2017, she set to work creating New Haven Gardens. Her business has grown steadily, and she and her team of four nurture gardens across the North Shore and the Hibiscus Coast. “Our focus is primarily residential with some commercial and body corporate work. We focus on garden maintenance and pre- sale makeovers, which have been very popular in recent times. Gardening is something that I love to do, and I was very happy when I made the decision to follow my passion,” she says. Amanda is a huge fan of organic gardening and NZ natives. Her tip for healthy plants is to make sure they have enough water, feed and mulch. “And if you need to spray weeds, try WeedX; it’s the only weed killer we use and its vinegar based” advises Amanda. Amanda has lived in Mairangi Bay for five years and simply loves the area, the people and the possibilities. Back in March during the first lockdown, Amanda had a bad fall off a ladder at home, fracturing her L1 and S1 vertebrae. The recovery took months and she was thankful for the support from her daughter, Matilda and husband, Paul. However, 2021 is beckoning and Amanda is now back in her beloved gardens.
