The Year of Science and Creativity was the
vision of Chelmsford Science and Engineering
Society (CSES) which celebrates its 100th
anniversary in 2020. To mark the occasion,
CSES supported the successful bid from Anglia
Ruskin University to host the British Science
Festival. The international festival is coming to
Essex in 2020 for the first time in its 189-year
history.

For Chelmsford, the year also marks
the centenary of The world’s first live
entertainment radio broadcast, by the Marconi
Company, from Chelmsford, with Dame Nelly
Melba. Further afield, the county celebrates
400 years since The Mayflower left Harwich
for the New World, the 300th birthday of the
Naze Tower and 200 years since The Beagle
took Darwin from the East of England to the
Galapagos. Lots to celebrate!

Want to get involved? You can find more
information at Essex2020.com. If you have a
new or existing project you’d like to run under
the Essex 2020 banner then you simply need
to submit details of your idea online. It should
take no more than 10 minutes and once
completed, if your project seeks to benefit
residents and businesses in Chelmsford,
Brentwood, Basildon or Maldon, you’ll be put
in touch to join our hub. If local to Chelmsford,
you can apply for funding from Chelmsford
City Council’s own fund.

As we are fundraisers, all the profits made at this event will go to our charity of the year; which
this year is Brentwood & Chelmsford Multiple Sclerosis Society, a charity which is very close to
the heart of our President. Do come along and join us and help support.

university. As someone who has never been
naturally athletic or flexible, I enjoyed the
mixture of physical challenge and getting to
lie down at the end!

After I had my first child in 2013, I returned to
yoga with a new awareness. I felt really tired,
not very strong and had lots of aches and
pains. I developed a much more gentle and
restorative practice, which meant that rather
than feeling depleted after each practice, I
actually had more energy! And eventually
decided to embark on my teacher training, so
that I could help others feel the same.

I truly believe that if you can breathe, you can
practice yoga! If you have ever been curious
about yoga, but been worried about your
knees, hips or wrists, please know that this
is really common, and there are many ways
that the practice can be adapted to make it
accessible to all. Alternatively, if you practice
other exercise (such as running or sport), yoga
can really help to reduce the likelihood of
injury and offer beneficial active rest.

Our January meeting was held in our usual
venue - Keene Hall where a ploughman’s
meal preceded the meeting. The talk for
the afternoon was really interesting and
informative about fraud, scams and the
precautions you can take.

At our February meeting the subject of the talk
is about the meaning of dreams.
We have a very varied programme for the year
ahead so if you are interested in joining the
Galleywood WI and would like to come along
as a visitor we meet on the second Thursday of
each month at 2pm at Keene Hall.

One of the saints must have said that making
people laugh is good for the soul! If you enjoy
a joke you retain it in your brain to make other
smile through life. What a difference it makes if
you can share a joke or ditty with a person you
meet and greet.
Scientists in USA (where a third of Tony’s family
live permanently) have discovered recently
that all memories before the age of 3 years, are
pure fiction.
