Derinya News JAPANESE! In Japanese this term, Year 2 students have been learning about ‘onigiri’ rice balls and their importance in Japanese culture. They studied the Japanese folktale, The Rolling Rice Ball’, folded origami mini books with onigiri instructions and sketched onigiri designs. This week there was great excitement as students applied their knowledge to make their own rice balls! They carefully molded the rice into triangles and used ‘nori’ seaweed to decorate their onigiri. A competition was held and winners chosen for the cutest, coolest and funniest onigiri in each class. The whole school #onigiriaction project initiated by our Japanese Captains, Mitch and Issy, was also a huge success with over 300 students participating by posting photos of their onigiri creations, sketches or poses. For each entry, the sponsors of this international project provide five school meals to children in need. ‘Arigato’ (thanks) and ‘omedeto’ (congratulations) to all students who took part in this event. Prizes will be awarded at this week’s assembly to the winners of each category for our in-school competition. Foundation students are loving the Totoro Story at the end of each Japanese lesson, as well as their study of animals and the ‘Shichi Go San’ 753 Festival. Year 1 students are enjoying exploring Japanese popular characters each week and watching a video clip of each ‘anime’. Year 3 students have completed their study of the basic Hiragana Chart and are showing competence in typing Japanese word lists. Year 4 students are continuing their Palaygo email exchange and ‘obento’ (lunchbox) study. Year 5 students are performing restaurant skits and exchanges with students in Japan. After our live chats and penpal letter exchange with the Japanese classes in Tokyo and Susono, our Year 6 students are currrently creating videos of Derinya to send to these schools. It is wonderful to observe students across the school embracing their Japanese learning back on site and to apply their language and cultural knowledge in meaningful and exciting ways. We are so proud of the efforts of all classes.
