New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Veterinary Nursing Assistant) (Level 5) This programme prepares students for employment as veterinary nursing assistants, by providing them with the skills, knowledge and attributes needed to help assist veterinarians and veterinary nurses in a companion animal practice. Career Opportunities Graduates of this qualification may be employed as a Veterinary Nurse Assistant working with companion animals in an animal related facility and be able to: • Maintain animal health and husbandry of animals in a veterinary clinic • Care for hospitalised patients. • Assist in surgery preparation and anaesthesia. • Assist with routine diagnostic procedures. Programme Outline Campus Whitireia Porirua campus Programme Length One-year, full time (no part-time option) Programme Dates Trimester 1: March 2021 Trimester 2: July 2021 Hours on Campus 9:30am-3:30pm, Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:00pm, for work placement Learning Mode This programme is delivered by blended learning i.e. face to face and online learning. This means some of your lessons may be delivered via Moodle (our online learning platform), which will require you to have a computer and internet access at home. Students will also need to be able to study from home should Covid-19 Alert Levels change. Programme Fee 2021 fees will be on the WelTec website from October; as a guide, the 2020 fees were $5,271.00. These fees apply to NZ Citizens & Permanent Residents only. Programme Overview The programme consists of seven compulsory courses, three at Level 4 and four at Level 5. Course Aim VN4100 (15 credits) To enable students to demonstrate knowledge and skills essential Introduction to Professional Practice for professional practice in veterinary practices. To enable students to demonstrate an understanding of animal BN4101 (15 credits) health and husbandry and apply this while working with animals Animal Health and Husbandry in an animal care facility. VN4102 (15 credits) To enable students to provide client and patient services in an Reception and Client Services animal care facility. To enable students to develop clinical practice, knowledge and VN5100 (20 credits) skills, and use these while assisting the veterinary nurse or Clinical Practice veterinarian. VN5101 (20 credits) To enable students to demonstrate knowledge of diagnostic and Diagnostics and Hospitalised Patient Care hospitalised patient procedures and practices by assisting with these in a veterinary clinic. VN5102 (20 credits) To enable students to develop and apply skills and techniques Surgery Preparation and Anaesthesia essential for assisting in surgery and with anaesthesia. To enable students to demonstrate integration of knowledge, VN5103 (15 credits) skills and behaviours through providing professional veterinary Professional Practice nursing assistance in a veterinary clinic. Theory To succeed in this programme, you will need to attend all scheduled on-campus classes, complete all your work placement hours and complete your self-directed learning (most of which is online in Moodle). The programme is largely classroom based, with theory to support p ractical application. You will be involved in practical lessons as well as regular self-directed learning, including group work, where you will undertake a variety of tasks such as research projects and case studies. Work Placement Students must attend and complete a minimum of 240 work placement hours as follows: • 200 hours in a veterinary clinic. You will need to secure your own work placement in a veterinary clinic and complete a minimum of 200 hours. This placement needs to be scheduled for each Tuesday from 06 April 2021-19 October 2021 for 8-hour days (excluding the mid-trimester break from Monday 28 June until Friday 09 July 2021). • 40 hours in an animal care facility. During trimester two, your tutor will arrange a second work placement at Animates Vetcare. This is scheduled across three weeks on a Wednesday and Thursday to provide students with an experience in a second veterinary clinic. You will need to arrange your own travel to and from your work placements; we encourage students to carpool if possible. Important Note: Please note that even though the work is enjoyable, some students may find some situations emotionally distressing, such as animals that have been abused, are injured or sick, or require euthanasia. 2021 Information for Applicants: Vet Nursing Assistant Fees, programmes and dates are subject to change 2
Entry Requirements 60 credits at NCEA Level 2 with at least 12 credits in Level 2 English, 12 credits in Level 1 Maths and 12 credits of relevant science at Level 1, or equivalent tertiary study, or meets the education provider’s requirements for the equivalent numeracy and literacy standards. English Language (for international students) • A minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5, or equivalent OR • Achieved the academic entry requirements in New Zealand or at an institution where English was the language of instruction and assessment. Other Applicants must: • be a minimum of 18 years of age at the commencement of the programme • provide a curriculum vitae and two references • provide a medical declaration indicating there is no evidence of a medical condition that will impact on their ability to practice safely as a veterinary nurse assistant • Provide a one-page document outlining why you wish to pursue veterinary nursing as a career, and which answers the following questions: - Outline any discussions you have had with veterinarians, veterinary nurses, veterinary nurse assistants and other professionals in the veterinary field about choosing this career. - Describe what you consider the role of a veterinary nursing assistant to be. • Undergo a police check at the time of entry into the programme. In the event of an adverse police report, entry into the programme will be at the discretion of the Head of School. In exceptional circumstances the requirement for a police check may be waived by the Head of School. How to Apply 1. We recommend you apply online from the WelTec website. 2. Before you start your online application, you will need to have the following documentation available to upload when requested: • Completed ‘Supplementary Application for Health & Social Services Programmes’ * • Completed one-page document outlining why you wish to pursue veterinary nursing as a career, and which answers the following questions: - Outline any discussions you have had with veterinarians, veterinary nurses, veterinary nurse assistants and other professionals in the veterinary field about choosing this career. - Describe what you consider the role of a veterinary nursing assistant to be. • Referee reports * (refer to step 3 below) • Verified ID • Verified official transcripts • Curriculum Vitae * These additional forms are available on the programme webpage. 3. Give the referee reports to two people who are willing to be your referees. Ask them to complete the forms and either return to yourself (so you can upload with your application), or scan and email to enrolments@weltec.ac.nz within 10 days. Please note applications will not be processed until both referee reports have been received. 4. Applicants who meet the academic entry requirements will be interviewed by members of the Selection Committee to determine their suitability. 5. Student Support At WelTec, we are committed to our students' success and therefore offer a range of services to meet the learning needs of individual students. Māori and Pacific Engagement Advisors are available to provide pastoral care for Māori and Pacific students, and information on alternative support networks and grants. To increase our students' chances of success, we provide support for our students in other ways such as financial advice, counselling, childcare facilities, and a service for students who have a disability, illness, or health problems that may interfere with their studies. Some students may struggle with the reading, writing and mathematical elements of the programme. We have an Engagement Advisors team that can aid students who are finding these aspects challenging. It is best if we can identify the need for this support before you commence studying. As part of your application process you may be asked to come in for a learning conversation to assess whether you are study ready. You could be advised of alternative pathways to reach your goals. Foundation Studies WelTec and Whitireia offer a choice of programmes to assist you to gai n skills and knowledge in preparation for a variety of education or employment pathways. Programmes are offered at different levels, to provide you with a pathway suitable to your background. Within the programmes, different strands are also available to support you to go onto further education or employment in a specific field.
