Remote Lesson Planning: Anzac Day Webinar 9 April 2020 Remote lesson planning: not as impossible as you think The rapid shift to remote teaching and learning doesn’t mean the fundamentals of teaching have to change. There are many ways to do it and ClickView has a range of methods to support you along the way. Consider your tools Schools, faculties and individual teachers need to think about what they have available to them in terms of technology resources and skills, and how they can be leveraged to bring teaching and learning into the online space. Synchronous Will you teach live according to an incremental daily timetable? This means communication happens in real time, allowing for instant feedback and clarification meaning it could be more engaging and effective. On the other hand, it requires much of technology in terms of video conferencing, live chat platforms and the bandwidth for live-streamed video. Asynchronous Will you set projects for students to work on independently while scheduling regular check- ins? Communication does not happen live so will rely on students motivating themselves to work independently at their own pace. However, it might be more convenient and flexible, as you already have access to email and recorded video content on ClickView. Some things to expect Be prepared to only be able to deliver between a third and half of the content you’d regularly be able to deliver. This is due to: • Technology issues • Students’ diverse learning environments • Development of new study-and-work-from-home routines • Varying levels of parent/guardian involvement • Health and wellbeing priorities The standard of work from students may look and sound different too. Some students may struggle, but some may really thrive. This is an exciting opportunity to see students respond to your teaching in a way you’ve never seen before! ClickView has a range of methods you can use to make sure you don’t reinvent everything you already have prepared. Lesson planning is still possible, even when teaching and learning happens remotely. Welcome and introduce the lesson Personal touches are important in what can feel like a very disconnected and impersonal context. Record yourself introducing each lesson, setting the learning intention and asking some key questions that will help you gauge students’ prior learning. • Record and upload directly from your smartphone to your Workspace with the ClickView apps • Upload any pre-recorded video of yourself to your Workspace from your computer or laptop • Insert interactive questions to ascertain what students already know • Share with your students to receive their responses in your Workspace, ready to analyse them to inform your next lessons • Click below for very simple example. Remember: now is the time to shake off any camera shyness and that hatred we all have for the sound of our own voice! Give instruction or explain concept You can do this yourself of course, by recording and uploading your own teaching! Keep your videos short and concise (anywhere from 3-7 minutes, depending on the age and level of the students’ understanding), with one or two learning ‘chunks’ per video to minimise cognitive loading. This will also allow for students to stop, rewind and review the video enough times for them to understand the concept before moving on. If you’re still not keen on getting in front of the camera, perhaps try recording your PowerPoint presentations instead. Your ClickView administrator can increase the Workspace storage size for you by following this simple tutorial. The videos contained in the ClickView libraries are designed specifically for curriculum outcomes. You’ll find short, sharp explanations, alongside longer-form documentary-style videos.
