The Portsmouth Academy Week 12B Parent Bulletin w/c 30 Nov 2020 Important Dates Tuesday, 1 December – TPA Christmas Jumper Day Friday, 18th December – Last day of term, students dismissed at 12:30pm Anti-Bullying Week 2020– Mr Hatherley, Vice Principal At the Portsmouth Academy, staff and students came to together to put on a full programme of activities for National Anti-bullying Week. The Anti-bullying week activities were supported by our tutor activities and PSHE sessions, all of which got pupils to think about what role they wanted to play in situations of bullying and how best to be an upstander and say no to bullying. The anti-bullying messages were underpinned by choosing kindness and being positive. The week started off with a virtual assembly from Mr Hatherley, Vice Principal, setting out the week’s activities and delivering a strong, clear message about bullying and how students can act to stop it. In PSHE sessions, Heads of Year shared their own personal experiences of bullying and the pupils produced anti-bullying pledges in the form of puzzle pieces which will be displayed around school. These pledges will also be used to inform the projects which will be run by our new Anti-Bullying ambassadors. The recruitment of these ambassadors was launched during the week and those ambassadors will be trained in supporting pupils throughout the community and helping them to speak up. The TPA Cyber Ambassadors, a group formed to promote online safety and good digital citizenship for students, also contributed to Anti-bullying Week activities by creating a starter for the PSHE lesson which was really beneficial to the learning and understanding of keeping safe online.
Students spread positivity around the academy with #Bekind postcards. The postcards could be written to staff, students or taken home for family members to remind people that they are cared about even if they don't always think it. Students submitted fantastic entries for the anti-bullying poster competition and the winning entries will be printed and displayed around school. Each day, an anti-bullying quote of the day was posted on the Trilby TV system to reinforce the messages of kindness. To show their support for LGBTQ inclusivity in sport, the PE department will be selling rainbow shoelaces to students. It was fantastic to see the school united together for Anti-bullying week and seeing the positive impact it has had on the school community. Face Coverings - Mr Hatherley, Vice Principal A polite reminder to parents that students must bring a face covering to school each day and wear them in communal areas of the school. Face coverings are part of our level 1 safety measures and this policy is in place not only for your child’s protection and safety but that of the entire school community. Please ask your child to look after their face coverings so they do not need a replacement. Your support will ensure that the school day continues to run smoothly. Year 7 – Mr Davies Thank you for your continued support with the year group and reinforcing the messages around friendship groups and anti-bullying. More students are taking appropriate steps when unkind things are said to other students and I am really impressed with how the majority of students have engaged in Anti- Bullying week. This week has shown some students are still not making the best choices in the community. We have had numerous incidents outside of school of students bringing the school into disrepute. Please can you reinforce the message about respect in the community and being the best citizen they can be. Kind regards Mr Davies Year 8 – Mrs Wilson Thank you for all of your support with this week's online learning. I have had a lot of amazing feedback from staff, reporting that the year group are focused on their learning, and producing fantastic work! The year group continue to make me incredibly proud! Please could you ensure that your child has a suitable face mask upon their return to school, unless they are exempt. We are beginning to see increased numbers of students arriving to school without one, however this is now part of the school uniform policy. Myself and Mr Martin are on hand to support should you have any questions or queries. Kind wishes, Mrs Wilson Year 9 – Mr Parnell Thank you very much for your support with remote learning over the past fortnight. I was pleased with the overall levels of engagement from the year group. As you are aware, the academy has invested heavily in the development of our digital strategy over the past few months. This is to provide our students with the tools needed to tackle the 21st century; please continue to support your child through this process as they move through their studies here at TPA Regards, Mr Parnell and Mr Snookes Year 10 – Miss Hart Thank you for your continued support with Year 10 this week. It has been a challenge for some students this week as they adapt to a different way of learning, but they have shown their maturity in lessons, and are rising to the challenge superbly. I have been extremely proud of them. We are still having to hand out a large number of face masks on the gate in the morning. Please can you support the school by ensuring that your child has an appropriate face mask before they leave for school in the morning. Besides the masks, on the whole Year 10 uniform looks smart. I know that the lead up to Christmas can be a time when this slips. Students should not be wearing trainers at all (unless for medical reasons which has been agreed and approved by the school) and their jumpers under their blazers should be plain black or grey with no logos or hoods. Thank you again for your support with this and helping to keep your child looking like a smart member of our community. I hope you have a lovely week. Best wishes, Miss Hart
Year 11 – Miss Piper Year 11 have made the school community very proud this week, especially me as their head of year. I was extremely proud of the students who completed their PE BTEC exams and the students who showed amazing dedication in their GCSE Dance practical; particularly as they have only been able to practice together since September! As we gear up to the Christmas holidays our teachers will be preparing Year 11 for the revision that they will be expected to complete over the holidays in preparation for their second set of Mock Examinations that begin on January 11th 2021. Your daughter will be receiving her Mock Examinations timetable before the Christmas break. This will enable you to help your daughter prepare for the exams and plan in revision. The winner of this week’s GCSE pod Piper’s Podders competition was AJ from 11YOU. Well done your £10 Love to Shop voucher is on its way to you. Thank you to Mrs Grey for being the first member of staff to pull out the winner of the fortnightly “pink card” revision competition - #stepuptorevision.
