Issue 9 7th June, 2018 Burwood Heights Primary School’s goal is to educate the whole child. Our students are at the heart of everything we do. ‘MAGGIE’ IT IS! The naming of our adopted cow became clearer when we received a beautiful photo of her. At first sight, we knew she would be called “Maggie 613” by us all. How did this temporary adoption occur? Settle back and read this amazing story of a farmer who lives in New South Wales, in a beautiful val- ley in Picton. The drought came. The land was parched and there were no crops for the cows to eat. It was overwhelming for all the farmers. What were they to do to keep their cows alive? Then, Mr Fairley, who has been a dairy farmer all his life, swallowed his pride and asked for help from others to keep his cows alive. He was desperate. He had never seen conditions worse than this in his eighty-three years on the land. The plan to “adopt a cow” was born. Money was needed to help pay for the cows’ feed until Spring. If this happened and the cows were fully hand-fed, all winter, they might survive. He had estimated that it would cost $1,350.00 per cow to feed until the end of September. He had one hundred and thirty cows. We are all now the adoptive parents of “Maggie 613” and you are all welcome to visit her in her paddock at Picton, a beautiful town, nestled in a lovely rural environment, just one hour southwest of Sydney.
