Term 4 Week 2017 7 Dear Parents/Malo e lelei/Talofa lava/Bula vinaka/Konnichi wa/Kia orana/Kia ora te whanau/Namaste/Welkom/Ni hao STAR/Gateway and Bees One of the advantages of being an area school is watching children grow, develop and succeed all the way from little new entrants to strapping Year 13s. Of course, the bigger and older students get, the more important their assessments and qualifications become, particularly as they enter Years 12 and 13. By far the majority of NCEA credits come from students working hard and making the most of learning opportunities in class; however, a growing number of NCEA credits are also available through two special avenues: Gateway and STAR. Gateway is what many of us will remember as ‘work experience’ from our own school days and is basically the idea of putting students into real work places they are interested in for a term or two, so that they earn standards and credits that qualify them for a job in that industry. Often those Gateway placements open doors for apprenticeships or further courses students can complete while still at school. Our students have performed admirably in numerous workplaces, ranging from the Warehouse where six students completed a certificate in customer service, to our own Cornerstone Christian Preschool, where three of our girls worked on standards in Early Childhood Education. STAR, on the other hand, stands for Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource and is a funding stream the school receives to send senior students on courses, ranging from barista training and café skills to forklift safety and hairdressing. These courses, provided by a host of industry training organisations like UCOL and PORSE, also allow students to earn a lot of NCEA credits in industries they may be keen to work in. This year, our older students have had the opportunity to learn an abundance of skills in these sorts of areas that, for some, have confirmed the career paths they’d like to move towards. One unusual but very worthwhile endeavour STAR has enabled us to get involved in recently is beekeeping, also called Apiculture, which is worth about 80 NCEA Level 2 and 3 credits. It also provides a lot of enterprise and fundraising opportunities for our senior students, as the bees do what God intended and we share in the fruits of their labours. On the weekend, four small bee colonies (called ‘nucs’ in beekeeping lingo) were delivered to the apiary we’ve constructed down the storage facility-end of the far paddock. At that moment, we became the largest of several secondary school-owned apiaries in the region. The bees are out of sight and out of mind for most of the school community but from this week onwards secondary students, decked out in white bee suits, will begin excursions down to the far paddock. There they will learn about, monitor, and eventually extract honey from some of God’s most fascinating creations, all the while gaining qualifications to prepare for life beyond the classroom. Blessings, Right: Sam May checking that Carl McIntyre the bees are settling in well at STAR and Gateway coordinator the school beehive.
