FEBRUARY 2021 NEWSLETTER The official newsletter of Canada Star Secondary School What is Pink Shirt Day? What's inside: BY FABIANA MARTINEZ - DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE On February 24th, we celebrated Pink Shirt Day at Canada Star Secondary School. Pink Shirt Day is is a day when people come together by wearing pink shirts to IN THE CLASSROOM school or work to show they are against bullying. How did Pink Shirt Day begin? In 2007 in Nova Scotia, Grade 12 students David GIVING BACK TO OUR Shepherd, Travis Price and a few friends saw that a Grade 9 student was being COMMUNITY bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. They knew they had to do something to show that this kind of behaviour was not OK. They decided to go out and buy a bunch of pink shirts and hand them out to other students to wear. By the end of that week, most of the students in the school were wearing pink shirts to show support for the Grade 9 student who was bullied. Pink Shirt Day has now spread and became a national day of anti-bullying across Canada and other countries in the world! Although wearing a pink shirt on Pink Shirt Day is a great way to show you are against bullying, it’s important that we all stand up against any kind of bullying every day, all year long!

FEBRUARY 2021 IN THE CLASSROOM "We've been very fortunate to welcome many new students to Canada Star Secondary School this semester, and they have already gotten off to a great start. Our Social Studies 10 class has been exploring their way through the forests and mountains of Canada (virtually) as they learn about the physical geography of the country. They are currently planning their survival kits to demonstrate an understanding of the challenges that each specific region presents. As well they are trying something new this semester by honing their debate skills, by learning and recognizing common logical mistakes in the argument. With a lot of work and a little luck, by the end of the semester, we can expect a team of newly-minted argument ninjas. In our Drafting and Design course, students began by learning the design process by planning and building clay-firing catapults. To tackle the design process in future projects, they are now learning 3D modelling skills on their computers which will help them take their ability to represent an idea to the next level. Meanwhile, our English 10 class is working hard on their writing fundamentals, doing the difficult work of developing their vocabulary and grammar ability to make compelling pieces to read. Ultimately, they will construct their own websites and populate them with blogs that describe their most cherished interests and pastimes. So far, the pulse of the student community in each of these classes has been very encouraging - it makes each day a joy to be a part of it." Mr. Tanner
FEBRUARY 2021 Students in Science explored why we wear masks and wash our hands during the pandemic by culturing bacteria, mold and fungus from different sources around the school. Students in Geography 12 learned the ins and outs of contour maps by solving these contour puzzles and seeing how 3 dimensions is represented in a 2 dimensional map In Career Life Education, students planned, designed, and filmed their own "About Me" videos. In each video, we learned about student interests, goals, and future plans.
FEBRUARY 2021 AP Psychology students started the semester off by researching famous historical psychologists. Each student created a Funko Pop to present to the class. Here, we have Sally and Forest teaching the class about Charles Darwin and William James. The students in Mr. Chiang's Class are showing what they learn with pride and happiness! (Left) Students in Food Studies 10 were reviewing a YouTube video about Canadian food and what makes it unique and authentic. (Right) February has been a fun and exciting month for Grades 8 and 9 students. They continue to bring their energy, enthusiasm, and humour to their new classes. With one semester under their belt, they continue to demonstrate that they are more than capable of using their communication, creativity, and thinking skills in various class activities for English 8/9. What exactly are they up to? Find out in the next newsletter. But for now, here are some behind the scenes pictures for an upcoming project in English 8/9.

GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY The National Society of High School Scholars connected with MamasforMamas, a national charitable organization that supports mothers and caregivers in crisis by providing ongoing support to individuals and families facing various poverty- related struggles. Our students outdid themselves regarding our request to supply the charity with the shampoo they needed. We gathered 113 bottles! Our Student Council and National Society of High School Scholars members delivered one flower for each resident at Pinegrove Place, an assisted living facility for elders in our neighbourhood. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we were not able to go inside. We value spreading kindness.
