November 2018 Conference Thanks! Thank you all for attending Parent/Teacher conferences last month. We appreciate the high level of participation! We value the opportunity to partner with families throughout the year! Thank you to all families who helped out with conference meals and Book Fairs at our schools! Attendance Matters! Please remember to call your child in if they are ill and missing school. If you know of an absence in advance, please send a note to school explaining the anticipated absence. If your child is out for medical or dental appointments, please provide a doctor’s excuse on the day your student returns to school. We are striving for less than five absences for students, as we know that when they are missing school, they are missing out on learning opportunities! As always, if you are concerned about bullying, please contact your child’s teacher or principal. Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/miltonwestway/ 4
November 2018 Winter Clothing Expectations With colder temperatures and snow in the immediate forecast, we wanted to share some reminders about our expectations for student dress at recess. As a school, we have the responsibility to monitor the safety of all our students and this is especially true during the colder months of the year. At West, our students go out to recess unless the temperature/wind chill is below zero, so it is important that our students are dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Below you will find some helpful reminders. • When the temperature/wind chill is 32°F or below, students are expected to wear a winter coat, hat, and gloves. • When the temperature/wind chill is 0°F or below, or it is raining, students will have indoor recess. • In order to go on the snow, students are expected to wear winter coats, snow pants, hat/gloves, and boots. Without this gear, they are expected to stay on the blacktop areas. • If students do not have the appropriate clothing to wear outdoors, they will go to the office to wear one of the extra coats that are housed in the office closet, or call home to have parents/guardians bring a coat. • Please be sure to label all of your student’s winter clothing as it is quite common for items to end up in our lost and found. In general, it is a good idea for students to keep a coat in their cubby in the fall and spring, as the weather conditions change daily. If you have any questions regarding these expectations, please contact the West Elementary School office at 608.868.9230. Veterans Day Ceremony Milton West Elementary School November 12, 2018 (9:00 AM) Milton West Elementary School will be observing Veterans Day with a special ceremony to honor and thank all who served in the US Armed Forces. We would like to invite any current or former service men and women as well as their families to attend. Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/miltonwestway/ 5
November 2018 Classroom Updates The month of November is filled letters, sounds and how to use them in words when reading and writing. We are preparing for Daily 5 by building stamina when we Listen to Reading, Read to Self and Read to Someone. Additionally, we are getting ready for our ABC Party with school activities and reading (at home) 1 book for every letter of the alphabet. On Nov 20th we will dress in clothes with alphabet letters and celebrate with fun games, songs and treats. Our big ideas in Math Unit 2 are using 5 groups, addition and subtraction stories to 5, practicing numbers 1-10 as a + 1 pattern (6 is 5+1 more 8 is 7 +1 more) practice numbers 1-10 as - 1 pattern (8 is -1 (1 less) than 9, 6 is -1 (1 less) than 7. First grade is wrapping up their second unit in mathematics, which focuses on helping students represent addition and subtraction, understand equality, count on to add, and understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. They are beginning their informational writing unit in which they teach readers about a topic. Students are building their reading skills by working in small groups with their classroom teacher. They are working on using strategies to decode various words and understand the books that they are reading. First grade students have been doing a great job of practicing being kind by completing a kindness challenge each day. Second grade just completed our first unit in math. During this unit there were several objectives we focused on with regards to children and their math abilities. During this unit students: • Learned how to fluently add and subtract within 20 • Explained why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and properties of operations • Determined whether a group of objects were odd or even • Wrote equations to express an even number as the sum of two equal addends • Learned to add three or four 1-digit addends, making 1 or 2 new tens • Solved one- and two-step word problems using drawings and equations Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/miltonwestway/ 6
November 2018 Starting this week our new focus in math will be on addition within 200. During this unit, we will have new objectives that we are focusing on in math class. After unit two children will: • Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add • Fluently add within 100 • Add up to four two-digit numbers • Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work Through informational writing, third graders are using their “expertise” to teach others. At the onset of writing, students are exploring different ways to organize their thinking into chapters with a logical order using text features to structure a piece. In reading, students have been working on retelling a text they have read by identifying the main idea and supporting key details. Third graders continue to learn multiplication and division with a focus on 6s, 7s, and 8s. Children are working to become fluent with their facts with an emphasis on using mathematical strategies. Students are also working to identify the operation indicated by word problems and planning a solution pathway. Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/miltonwestway/ 7
