Vol. MMXXI– Number 4 The Newsletter of the Sarasota Branch of the AAUW DECEMBER 2020 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE December, 2020 This holiday season, I think we’re all more than ready for some fun. Carol Bernasconi and Joan Nasser have been busily collaborating with Santa and his elves to assure that our branch Holiday Festival is a jolly affair. Join in the fun on December 16 at 2:00 pm by wearing your holiday finery and having your favorite traditional treat(s) ready. This will be a time for us to relax and enjoy each other. In the past, we’ve passed the stocking at our Holiday Luncheon to collect donations for the Season of Sharing. → This year, instead of a stocking, address an envelope to: AAUW Sarasota P.O. Box 3554 Sarasota, FL 34230 Enclose your check (no cash please) made out to The Community Foundation of Sarasota County and put it the mail no later than December 11. May you all have a safe and joyous holiday season filled with wonderful new traditions and some old favorites as well. Lois Fisch, President 2
Vol. MMXXI– Number 4 The Newsletter of the Sarasota Branch of the AAUW DECEMBER 2020 Public Policy Report Now that the election is over and we know who our local representatives will be, the plan for Public Policy is the dissemination of the Gatta report titled Aging Women, and Economic Insecurity in Sarasota County, FL. I am making it a priority that each legislator will receive a printed copy, hand-delivered if possible, with the hope that we can have a conversation about possible ways to address the problems described in the report. At the very least, the legislators at all levels of government will begin to know the AAUW name. Diana Sells, Public Policy Director Women Inventors: Did You Know? Monopoly This popular board game was designed by Elizabeth Magie in 1904, originally called the Landlord's Game. The purpose of this game was to expose the injustices of unchecked capitalism. Her game was ripped off by Charles Darrow who sold it to Parker Brothers 30 years later. However, Parker Brothers later paid Elizabeth $500 for her game. Gee, thanks! Thanks to Sue Casey. 3
