Course Selection Process for 2022-2023 • Prior to meeting with a CGHS School Counselor: • Speak to your current teachers about the appropriate next level course to take (i.e., AP English Language -> AP English Literature; Algebra -> Geometry; World History -> US History; Early Childhood Educ. 1 -> Early Childhood Educ. 2) for recommendation prior to meeting with a School Counselor. • Recommending teacher will need to place their initials next to the appropriate course on the course selection sheet. • Students will need to review their completed “Course Selection” sheet with their parents prior to turning the sheet into their “Study Hall” teacher. (NOTE: If a student does not have a Study Hall, they will need to return their sheet to the CGHS Guidance secretary. • Both the students and a parent will need to read and sign the front of the “Course Selection” sheet. • Course Selection will not be finalized until the student meets with a School Counselor.
Sample of Course Selection Sheet ❖ Students need to complete the following: 1. Complete identification information: a. Student Name (Last, First) b. Student Number c. Phone Number 2. Student and parent signatures 3. Teacher initials next to recommended course 4. Select your next level core courses a. English/Language Arts b. Mathematics c. Science d. Social Studies 5. Select Study Hall (all students take a Study Hall) 6. Select three (3) electives ▪ One of electives may be a Reading course based on the student’s most recent FSA ELA/Reading score. 7. Select three (3) alternate elective courses NOTE: • Course progressions are based on student grades and FSA scores. • Not all electives will appear on your schedule, some may be alternates. However, alternates may become part of your schedule, so they should be classes you are willing to take.
What Classes Should I Choose? ❖If you want to be competitive for admission to college: 1. Choose Honors, AICE and AP courses (based on previous test scores and grades) 2. Choose academic electives 3. Continue with higher level math, science, and foreign language classes ❖Things to think about: 1. When choosing AP, AICE and/or Honor courses, be aware that you are making a commitment to complete the entire course. 2. It is very difficult to change schedules, so choose wisely. ✓Due to the requirements of the Class Size Reduction Amendment, requests for schedule changes may be denied as classes reach maximum legal capacity! 3. Please note when choosing your classes, you may have a reading class in your schedule next year depending on your most current FSA ELA Reading score.
