English – Myth Stories • This week in English, we are going to look at Myth Stories. • Myth definition: ‘A traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people or explaining a natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events.’ • We are going to look at some myths about water- dwelling creatures, linking to our ‘Rivers, Coasts and Mountains’ Geography Topic work. • Today, we are going to look at Merpeople.
English – Myth Stories • Merpeople are represented as creatures having the head and upper body of a human, and a fishtail instead of legs. • Female merpeople are known as mermaids, and male merpeople are known as mermen. • They inhabit the sea, usually have great beauty and charm – and in a lot of mythology, they lure sailors to their deaths. • Some stories include mermaids altering their form to resemble humans. • The most well-known story about merpeople is "The Little Mermaid“, a fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen in 1837. The story follows the journey of a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea as a mermaid to gain a human soul.
English – Myth Stories • We are going to read an adaptation of ‘The Little Mermaid’ today. • Click this link to play the audio (the story read aloud), and try to follow the pdf copy of the story on the screen (or, if you are able, you can print it out). • https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/english-ks1--ks2-the- little-mermaid-hans-christian-andersen/z6g2cqt
English – The Little Mermaid Questions Try to write a short paragraph to answer each of these questions. Write in full sentences. 1. Why does the Little Mermaid wish to become human? (Is there more than one reason?) 2. What does the Little Mermaid have to give up in order to become human? (Again, is there more than one sacrifice she has to make?) 3. The Little Mermaid cannot speak to the prince to tell him she rescued him. In what other ways might she have been able to tell him? Why do you think she does not use these other ways? 4. The ending of the story is very sad. How could the ending be changed to make it happier? Do you think this would make it a better story? 5. Extension Task: Rewrite the end of the story to make it end more happily!
Computing – Maths (Mathletics) and Reading (Reading Eggs) • Today, you are going to be doing Maths in your Computing lesson. • I have assigned you each four, year-group specific fractions tasks. • Please log in and work your way through them. • When you have finished, I have assigned you a year-group specific lesson on Reading Eggs. (But complete your Maths first!)
Guided Reading – Maths Times Tables Crosswords! • In Guided Reading today, you are also going to do Maths! • You are going to work on your times tables by completing a crossword! • All the questions and answers are in words, so you will also be practising your spelling! • Don’t worry if you can’t print – you can write your answers down on a piece of paper, and count the number of boxes on the screen to see if you have the right number of letters and therefore the right spelling! • There are three challenges: • Year 3 – Most Year 3s. • Year 4 – Most Year 4s and more confident Year 3s. • Year 4 Stretch – More confident Year 4s.
We hope that you have enjoyed today’s learning! Miss Pickup & Mrs Gray
