Do Choose subjects you enjoy Choose subjects you are good at Choose subjects you need for your chosen career Keep your options open for the future by making a balanced choice now Consult with Parents/Guardians Talk to Guidance Counsellor & Subject Teacher Look up career websites and do some online interest tests
Don’t Choose a subject because your friend is taking it Choose a subject because you like / dislike the teacher Choose a subject because you think it will be easy Choose a new subject without finding out more about it Make a decision at the last minute without thinking about it
When choosing subjects, try to consider these factors: Ability and Aptitudes Interest College and Career
COLLEGE & CAREER: Three Hurdles to Gain Access into College through CAO system: 1. Leaving Certificate Points 2. Minimum Entry Requirements 3. Course Entry Requirements
1. Points Points are calculated on the basis of the best six subjects. These grades must be achieved in one sitting of the Leaving Certificate. Points vary from year to year and are based on course demand Careersportal.ie has a useful points calculator tool
2. General Matriculation Requirements: Level 8 degree : Six subjects, 2 or 3 at Honours level Level 6 or Level 7 Degree : Five subjects at Ordinary level
General Matriculation Requirements cont... ● Entry to all Honours Degree 4 year (Level 8) courses requires 2 H5s at Higher level and 4O6s at Ordinary level in the Leaving Certificate. ● Trinity and teacher training colleges require a minimum of 3 H5s. ● NUI Colleges (UCD, NUIG, UCC, Maynooth) St. Angela’s, Shannon College of Hotel Management and Royal College of Surgeons, require a pass in English, Irish and a third language. ● Higher Certificate courses 2 year (Level 6) require a pass in five subjects, (5 O6/H7 grades) to include Maths and English or Irish.
General Matriculation Requirements cont... ● University of Limerick and Trinity require passes in Maths, English and Irish or another language. ● National College of Art & Design requires a pass in English, Irish, Maths and a third language or Art. ● All other Colleges require a pass in Maths and Irish or English. ● H4 (60 -70%) in Honours Irish is essential for Primary teaching. ● H4 in Honours Maths is essential for Level 8 Engineering courses.
3. Course Entry Requirements: Some courses state specific subjects and grades candidates must have before they are deemed eligible. You must have specific subjects to take certain courses, regardless of how many points you get. Honours Maths Chemistry Physics Some Mathematics, Veterinary in UCD Theoretical Physics in Business Analytics, Pharmacy, Dentistry Trinity. Industrial Physics, and Medicine in UCC Actuarial Studies, Dietician in DIT Computer Science, Economics(UCD), Pharmacy in Trinity and Computational Royal College of Thinking(MU) and Surgeons. Engineering degree Medicinal and Health courses Science in UCC.
3. Course Entry Requirements cont. Biology Two Sciences One Science Some Beautician / Medicine, Dentistry, All Medical and Nursing Hairdressing courses Physiotherapy, Science, courses, Home Genetics in UCC and Pharmacy, Genetics and Economics ,PE Human Health and Medicinal Chemistry . teaching, Biology Disease in Trinity. Pharmacy, Medicine teaching. and Dentistry in UCC. Sports Science and Geography is Athletic Therapy and acceptable as a Science Health and Society in subject for some DCU courses in Trinity and Some Science, for science in UCD. Horticulture ,Engineering, Sport, Construction and Technology courses.
3. Course Entry Requirements cont. Veterinary Medicine in UCD Undergraduate students applying through the CAO system will be required to demonstrate that they have acquired at least 60 hours practical experience relevant to animal handling or veterinary practice, covering at least two of three species areas: pets, horses and farm animals.
Some final thoughts... ● Choose subjects that you have an aptitude/ability for in order to maximise your points. ● Final decisions on career plans should be delayed as long as possible, what you want to be at 16 may not be what you want to be at 18! ● It’s impossible to pursue any Science course or Science related course in Third Level unless one has at least one science subject to Leaving Cert. Level. ● Honours maths is necessary for most degree courses in Engineering. ● A european language is necessary for many degree courses at University.
