Celebrating Denefield Happy Friday! I hope you and your households remain well. As you will see from this newsletter, we have had an excellent week this week. Many congratulations to our Greenpower racing car team who performed extremely creditably at Goodwood race track last weekend. And very well done to our Year 8 students who are learning fantastic new practical and other skills at Rushall Farm. In addition, well done to Year 11 and Year 13 who have continued to work incredibly hard on their assessments and exams in the run up to the end of term. We continue to monitor the Covid situation very carefully. As you will be aware we had a confirmed case in school this week and have had to send a small number of students home to self-isolate. From 17 May we will be making the wearing of face masks in lessons optional, but they remain compulsory on entry to school, and in corridors and communal areas. I would also like to remind all parents/carers to ensure that students take their LFD tests, preferably on a Wednesday and Sunday evening, and that any positive results are reported immediately to school. Celebrating our students… Greenpower success! Last weekend, Denefield Greenpower Racing Team competed in their first session of the season. They participated in four Greenpower sprint races at Goodwood motor circuit which were all 20 minutes long. Our drivers for the weekend were Toby in Year 10, Johnathan in Year 10, Zachary in Year 8 and Taylor in Year 9. Many other students took part in the day with special mention to Kemianna, James, Jack, Anton, Noah and George (all in Year 9) and William (in Year 8) for helping the drivers during the race. All this team work helped the team achieve an 8th place finish out of 23 kit car entries. A fantastic achievement! We would like to thank our sponsor Wood Engineering for their ongoing support and also to local company sportbikeshop.co.uk in Link Park for the donation of balaclavas for the team at very short notice.
Celebrating our students… The Princess Trust A massive well done to Frankie in Year 7, who has had her hair cut and donated it to The Princess Trust. Year 8 at Rushall Farm Every Monday, Mr Adango and 10 Year 8 students make their way to Rushall Farm on board the school minibus. They join the trust in Bradfield that works with different schools to help build students' resilience, tolerance and communication skills. They also work on the skills needed to work in a team effectively. We expect and encourage students to apply the skills acquired at the farm in their lessons and around the school community. Last Monday, we put the students through a bit of manual work; they used loppers and hand saws to cut wood, to make fire when the weather gets dry. The students showed resilience and courage to get through the task. Well done to all of them!
Celebrating our curriculum… This edition’s subject area is… The travel and tourism industry is currently facing one its toughest challenges as the global travel routes start to reopen and tourists are welcomed in the UK and other countries around the world. During the lessons we are using key developments in the news to inform our students of the changes that are happening but also the impact these changes will have on the different businesses that are in the travel and tourism industry.
Celebrating our curriculum… During Travel lessons we use the latest information from the industry to inform our students of current trends and the impact of factors through looking at industry reports. According to Visit Britain more of us are willing to go on holiday this year with 52% of us feeling more comfortable going on holiday in August 2021. The top areas of the UK seeing bookings are currently: Cornwall Pembrokeshire Scottish highlands Visit Britain, in their recent survey, asked about the types of accommodation that we will be booking as tourists over the summer of 2021 and their results show that the most popular will be: Hotels Rented Cottages Camping What topics are we going to be learning about next? Year 9 will be working on their Component 1 Assignment 1 coursework. Year 11 have finished their course and we wish them well in their future studies and travels. Year 12 BTEC Business will be looking at the factors that affect tourism with a focus on what the world of travel looks like currently and in the near future. Students in Year 9 have been developing their research and planning skills through the completion of a coach holiday project. Students were given a choice of destinations in the UK based on film locations and asked to produce pages for a holiday brochure and an itinerary. Well done to this student for their fantastic work.
