Club Information From the Director of Member Engagement Welcome June! June is certainly one of my favorite months with the pool open, Ribs and Riffs, Kids Kamp, Bogie and Bacall, just to name a few. It’s so fun to see and hear our Club kids running around, having fun, and learning how to swim, golf, and play tennis. I am thankful that we are back fully operationally with KidZone, over 100 players each week in Couples Golf, and lots of giggles poolside. Golf From the Head Golf Professional The summer has arrived, and we are looking forward to a busy season of member tournaments, junior golf, and full tee sheets. We are excited to announce some changes to our golf operation policies that will allow us to provide better service and increase the number of players we can handle on a busy day. Golf From the Superintendent Following our mid-April aerification, the healing process on the greens has taken a little bit longer than I would have liked. We had a couple unfortunate frosts and a little cold spell towards the end of April, but the greens are back to their normal condition. June looks to be a really busy month. We have quite a few new members and plenty of tournaments, so I hope to see each and every one of you on the course. Now is the time when we need to be thinking about wear and tear on the turfgrass. Other than some scattered spring dead spot and minor winter injury in places, the Bermudagrass is right where it should be this time of year. That said, each season we get a few questions as to what exactly constitutes proper observance of the 90 degree cart rule. When observing the 90 degree rule, we ask that each golf cart remain on the cart path from the teeing area to a point where you can make a 90 degree turn from the cart path to your ball. Once you have played your shot we ask that you either return to the cart path from that point or proceed in the fairway until you come to the black directional posts. These posts signal that all golf carts must return to the cart path from that point through the green. If every golfer were to adhere to this simple rule, wear and tear in a number of rough areas would be tremendously reduced. Keep in mind that healthy turf improves playing conditions which ultimately benefit you and your guests. Golf Arthur Hills | 1930 - 2021 On May 18, Mr. Arthur Hills, course designer of Blackthorn Club, then known as The Ridges Golf and Country Club, passed away at age 91. Mr. Hills was noted for more than 200 course designs all over the world, and more than 150 renovations. In outlining all of his designs through the years, Mr. Hills wrote in his 2004 autobiography, The Works of Art, the following about his work at The Ridges: This private club in Johnson City is built on a piece of property that was pastureland. A small part of it is hilly. The terrain and a creek make the layout very strategic. It is one of the most challenging courses we have ever designed. A central mountain ridge dominates the property. This is another course we could so readily visualize by walking the land. We took nostalgic photos of old building and the cattle grazing. We used the photos in a slideshow for the owners to describe the holes to be built. We didn’t have to do a lot of grading because the routing related especially well to the land, but there was a major power line going through the site with three towers. We had to relocate the towers at a cost of $200,000 each. Indeed, power is expensive. We did build one unusual hole, the eighth, a par 5, which has a fairway split by Boone’s Creek with a shortcut landing area that can cut as much as forty yards off the hole. True to our philosophy, however, taking the short cut means being faced with a carry over a lake on the second shot. It was safer to go around the lake, but it’s a longer way to go. The credit for this hole belongs to Steve Forrest. It is too sophisticated for me to have figured out. When we built it, The Ridges was the area’s only golf course community and as yet is the second of only two courses we’ve designed in Tennessee. “It is one of the most challenging courses we have ever designed.” - Arthur Hills 6
Golf Arthur Hills | 1930 - 2021 As a graduate of Michigan State in Science and the University of He also was credited with renovation work at the Country Club of Michigan in Landscape Architecture, Hills was a prolific designer Florida in Village of Golf, which ranks No. 150 on Golfweek’s and was tagged by fellow architect Pete Dye as “The Mayor of Best Classic Courses list for all layouts built before 1960 in the Naples” for his many designs in southwest Florida. Among Hills’ country. Other samplings of his work include Bonita Bay in extensive renovation work, he made small changes to Oakland Naples, Florida; the Arthur Hills Signature Course at LPGA Hills before the 2004 Ryder Cup. His original layouts are International in Daytona Beach, Florida; The Golf Club of sprinkled throughout the Golfweek’s best course rankings Georgia in Atlanta; Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, California; for public-access layouts and private tracks. Most notable are Keene Trace in Lexington, Kentucky; and Hyatt Hill Country Old Stone, which ranks No. 2 among private courses in Resort in San Antonio, Texas. Kentucky; the Glacier Club’s Mountain Course, No. 8 among Mr. Hills is survived by his wife, Mary, their eight children, 24 private courses in Colorado; Bay Harbor’s Links/Quarry course, grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. No. 8 among Michigan’s public-access layouts; and Chicago Highlands, No. 11 among Illinois’ private courses. Balance There is no problem making a golf course tough. That’s no challenge. The challenge is having balance. Two of our courses, The Ridges and Egypt Valley Golf Club in Michigan, have very high slope ratings. We don’t necessarily aspire to that. We keep thinking we want to put challenge into the golf holes, but on occasion it becomes a bit more than an amply challenge. It’s okay for the best players, but it can be strenuous for us mere mortals. Sometimes the toughness reveals itself when the raters come. We don’t often build a golf course that has a back tee slope rating of, say 128. We like to play a course from a set of tees with a rating in the 120’s, but we like to design a course that is 136 to 140 from the back tees. We usually put in five sets of tees to ensure an appropriate challenge for all. What this all means is that we want tees for all players so they can play well enough to enjoy the course and the day. The Club’s original developers: (L to R) Rab Summers, Duke Ingram, course architect Arthur Hills, Buddy Fontaine, and Alex Knoll 7
