Tre Norwood honored (page 10) Volume 35 Number 1 www.fsbgc.org Winter 2021 CLUB MOURNS PASSING OF COMMUNITY LEADER JIM ALEXANDER Serving on the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club board of directors for 58 years, James C. Alexander was one of the most prominent business leaders our community has ever had. Alexander passed away on December 6, 2020 in Naples, Florida. Jim Alexander and his wife June established the FSBGC College Scholarship program in 1985. Since the creation of the program, 355 Club members have received college scholarships. Alexander served as board president in 1961-1962 and was nominating chair for more than 40 years. He was a former Boys Club member (Wheeler) and an outstanding multi-sport athlete who played football and baseball at Southern Arkansas University. Danny played several years of professional baseball and once played on the same minor league team with MLB legends Tony LaRussa, Reggie Jackson and Rollie Fingers. After his baseball career, Danny worked at Danny Greenfield Robert Frazier Carco International and was an avid golfer. He is survived by his son Ripper Greenfield (Paula) and three grandchildren. Ripper Greenfield is a former Boys & Girls Club (Jeffrey) Youth of the Year. Robert “Bob” Frazier – age 50, died on Nov. 12, 2002. He worked at the Evans Boys & Girls Club for the past 10 years. Robert started volunteering at the Club in 1997. Known for his dedicated work ethic, Robert was very involved in the FSBGC soccer program and the Haunted House fundraiser. He was a van driver for the FSBGC after-school shuttle. Robert owned Extreme Mix DJ company and sponsored soccer teams at the Boys & Girls Club. His memorial service was held at Hunts Park on Bob Laser Rick Sturgeon November 16. Robert is survived by two daughters, Candace Johnson (Wesley) and Courtney Valdez (Julio) and four grandchildren. Robert “Bob” Laser – an avid supporter of the Boys & Girls Club, died on December 4, 2020 at the age of 94. He was a retired architect and military veteran. Laser enjoyed playing tennis and was a long- time volunteer at Sutton and Cavanaugh Elementary Schools. He was a member of the Noon Civics Club and Goddard Methodist Church. Laser will be remembered for his outgoing and optimistic personality. He is survived by daughter Dr. Marcia Hixson (Richard) of Little Rock and son Stephen Laser (Shana) of Fort Smith. Richard “Spud” Savoy Larry Devero Rick Sturgeon – age 63, passed away on Dec. 9, 2020. He was a salesman for Pittsburgh Paints and worked in the paint industry for over 40 years. Sturgeon was a long-time sponsor and volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club. He was an active member of the FSBGC Alumni & Friends Association. Rick is survived by his wife of 45 years, Theresa Sturgeon; two sons Ricky Sturgeon (Megan) and Nickolas Sturgeon. Richard “Spud” Savoy Jr. – age 63, passed away on Dec. 19, 2020 in Fort Smith. He was a basketball referee at the Boys & Girls Club for Ronald Ray Janie Wyatt several years. Spud also delivered after-school and summer meals to the Clubs through a partnership with New Covenant Christian Church. He is survived by two sons, three daughters and thirteen grandchildren. Larry Devero – age 87, passed away on Dec. 20, 2020. Larry was retired from Whirlpool, where he worked in the Human Resources Department. He once served as a volunteer football coach at the Evans Boys & Girls Club and was an active member of the Alumni & Friends Association. He was a member of the Noon Civics Club, former board member of the Planning Commission, the Airport Commission, Girls Inc. and the Alzheimer’s Association. Larry is survived by two sons Phil Devero Jerry Neel Sr. Jim Alexander (Natalie) and Ed Devero (Susan) and seven grandchildren.

Jars full of coins were donated by a group of anonymous friends, who wanted to provide a monetary gift to kids in need. “Each of the jars had approximately $30 to $40 inside” said Jerry Glidewell, FSBGC executive director. The special donation of Christmas Jars (of coins) has taken place over the past four years. New Bus Wrap – Boys & Girls Club members will notice a the United Federal Credit Union graphics on a bus donated CENTRAL KIDS DONATE to the Club from First United Methodist Church. FOOD BASKETS TO NEEDY Thanksgiving baskets and turkeys were delivered Member of the Month Recipients to 20 needy families in November thanks to the efforts October Nikki Boone (Jeffrey) of Central Christian in Fort Smith. Santa Claus joined the celebration and visited with Volunteer of the Month Recipients participants during the holiday break. October Francisco Gallaicia (Jeffrey) Every week, the Boys & Girls Club receives funding Haunted House Workers (Evans) from Savers. Support is based on donated items to the Brianna Jackson (Stephens) store located at 7751 Rogers Avenue. When someone Haunted House Workers (Goldtrap) donates unused items to Savers, they receive a tax- November Clay Bray (Jeffrey) donation receipt. Winter 2021 www.fsbgc.org Page 7 TV 40/29 Helps Raise Funds Through Telethon Event Camy Hutchison helped organize a television telethon to benefit Boys & Girls Club in northwest Arkansas and the River Valley. The virtual event was held on Dec. 16. KHBS partnered with the CW network for promotions to help the cause, which included live interviews with volunteers and staff. Clubs participating included Fort Smith, Van Buren, Alma, Fayetteville, Bentonville, and Siloam Springs. “We are excited to find a way to give Boys & Girls Clubs some positive publicity along with some needed funding” Lee Carter provides weekly music instruction to Club said Hutchison. “The pandemic has been extra difficult on members participating in the T.J. Guitar program young people served by the Clubs.” TV 40/29 is a Hearst Media broadcasting partner. COX AWARDS $15,000 GRANT TO FSBGC With added focus on providing a virtual learning environment for young people, Cox Communications has awarded the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club with a $15,000 grant. Over the years, Cox has given generous support to the Boys & Girls Club for Tech centers and free internet services. “We are committed to helping young people in need” Optimist Club members present a $4,000 check to the said Whitney Yoder, public affairs manager for Cox. “Getting Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club during a special meeting students connected is key to their learning success” Yoder added. on December 16, 2020 in Fort Smith. The Club has supported the FSBGC for more than 60 years. FSBGC College Scholarships Applications Available High School seniors interested in applying for 2021-2022 College Scholarship support from the Boys & Girls Club can visit fsbgc.org to download an application form. Submission deadline is April 1. Applicants must have participated at the Club as a member (or volunteer) for a minimum of two years. Financial need, Boys & Girls Club participation, and academic excellence are key components committee judges consider when making scholarship selections. All new applicants go through an interview process. Selections are announced by May 1. The program was established in 1985. There were 28 recipients during the past year. Since the creation of the UAFS Ambassadors deliver a generous donation program, 872 awards have been granted. 355 individual club to members of the Jeffrey Boys & Girls Club for the members have received scholarships, with close to $1 million holidays.
