We are so grateful for all of the concerns and encouragement extended to Ros and I whilst I was away and we were both recovering from surgery. It is at times like these when the warmth and support of a community like this, which is always there, though we may become so side-tracked by the immediate to not pay it due heed, becomes all the more evident. It is such a privilege to be part of a “We” rather than a “Me” community. I was reflecting with Mr Croger that it was significant to realise that, at the busiest time of the year, with staffing for 2019, Year 12 departing, along with sundry other events and eventualities that find their way to the Big Desk for decision making; and the time that a Headmaster would normally never choose to be absent, it was curious that one of my least causes of concern in absentia, was the efficient running of the College. We are very grateful to be blessed with people of such compassion and competence; that things can continue on regardless and that the focus on educating the next generation can remain at the forefront of what we do. In a time where things are so busy, it is easy to become work-focused and to forget the hearts and minds of the people who work so hard to make it all happen. As we are nearing the end of the pioneering years, it is easy to be complacent and to assume that there is nothing special or wondrous about what God has created here at the College. In a time where cynicism and criticism from those who arm themselves with half a story yell loudly and proudly from the sidelines, it is easy to react and better to ignore. The calibre of the people in this drowns out negativity with actions in a time where we are buffeted and compelled by the urgent it is too easy to miss the important, Lest we forget. As I write this, it is still holidays for the students and most staff (but not for those who stay on at the College to manage maintenance, grounds, bills, enrolments and general business). Much has changed over the break with the new Transition fencing completed and a wonderful outdoor area yet to come, a Stage 3 building almost ready for 2019 and general landscaping and maintenance preparing for the new Primary playground. The long awaited outdoor classroom and Parents and Friends BBQ area will also be completed shortly. Today I hosted yet another delegation, this time the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps Association of NSW, who came to see the Shoulder to Shoulder Shelter; our College ANZAC Memorial. It was humbling to see and hear their reaction as each told stories of personal loss and grief. None wanted to leave. War is personal. They were thankful that the memory and the message of the ANZACs was being passed along to the next generation and even more grateful that our College community, and the many generous sponsors who contributed to the project, both service organisations and private companies, would care enough to take the time to remember the fallen (their fallen). One lady, in her eighties at a guess, was in tears as she listened to the story of the shelter. Her own story of personal loss in the great war was equally moving and I felt privileged to hear it. Lest we forget.

Date: Wednesday, 31 October 2018 Venue: Lakeside Golf Club Camden Mrs Rhonda Hay Headmaster’s Secretary From the Deputy’s Desk _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Duke of Edinburgh’s Award - Gold Qualification Adventurous Journey During the holidays seven students and five staff were involved in a Gold Level Qualification Journey. The hike commenced in Yass on Sunday, 30 September and was completed on Wednesday, 3 October at Wee Jasper. The journey was the first section of the Hume and Hovell track that extends from Yass to Albury. The weather was great for the first three days and the group walked through some picturesque countryside and farmland that had benefitted from recent rain. Apart from some encounters with snakes, some dead carp at Lake Burrinjuck, a rolled ankle, blisters and the bus running out of fuel, the trip went smoothly. Congratulations to the students who completed the Qualifying Hike which was approximately 70 kilometres. The students involved: Annaleise Forbes, Rylea Keen, Lilli Madden, Mitch Rockwell, Alexandra Rollason, Rebecca Thain and Travis Baxter. Thanks again to the staff involved Mrs Cochrane, Ms Huxtable, Mr Hart and Mr Hicks. Mr Ian Croger Deputy Headmaster
Pastoral Care - (T-12) ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ World Mental Health Day On Wednesday, 10 October during the holiday break World Mental Health Day 2018 took place. The theme for the day was young people and mental health in a changing world. At the College there is a strong understanding of the factors that contribute to positive wellbeing and a significant focus on supporting students as they navigate challenges as they grow and mature. Adolescence in particular can be an exciting time but one that can also be a period of increased stress and apprehension. In some areas if not recognised and managed, these feelings can lead to mental illness. The impact of expanding use of on-line technology and pressure to remain connected in a continuous manner day and night combined with challenges associated with family breakdown or significant trauma further impact on the mental health of young people. At the College there are a number of initiatives and programs in place to support student well-being and mental health. The programs and initiatives have the main qualities and features, all significant in the support of student wellbeing such as: Pro-active - Focus on prevention. Improved access to help-seeking information/services or links to external mental health professionals. Evidence based - Programs that have a research body that supports the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they develop to support student wellbeing. Have a focus on building mental resilience - This is seen as a significant skill that needs to be developed in an ongoing way to assist young people to manage and cope with challenges and change in the world today. Group Based, Support focused, Explicit Teaching of Management strategies to better support the area of concern and the provision of on-going support - Anxiety Presentation, Workshop groups and Reunion Groups. SRC Fundraiser On Friday, 28 September the College held a Mufti Day to support the African AIDS Foundation. This was an SRC initiative and has been supported in a generous way by the College community. The total raised was 1,185.80. The contributions of each of the House Groups are listed below: Grevillea $270.15 Wollemi $245.35 Acacia $241.60 Telopea $223.00 Sollya $205.70 Mr Liam Toland Director of Pastoral Care (T-12)
Director Of Teaching and Learning (7-12) ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yearly Examinations The formal examination period for Years 9 and 10 will commence on Friday, 2 November and will conclude on Tuesday, 13 November. As previously communicated through the Waratah Weekly and in the Assessment Information Booklets there will be a staggered introduction to Yearly Examinations from 2018. Years 7 and 8 will no longer have a formal examination period at the end of each year. Formal examinations will be introduced in Year 9 for the mandatory Learning areas of Maths, English, Science HSIE and PDHPE as well as any elective subjects who wish to include a Formal Examination. There are no changes to the Yearly Examination structure in Year 10, with all courses having a Yearly Examination. The length of all Examinations in Years 9 and 10 will be 1.5 hours. Students will receive further details about the examinations from their class teachers. Year 12 2019 Begin their HSC Year The start of Term 4 sees Year 12 2019 commence their HSC Year. I spoke to the students on Monday about the opportunity this fresh start brings. It is important that students are focused from the beginning of this Term and are organised making the most of their time. A positive start in Term 4 can really set students up well for 2019. Year 12 Assessment Information Evening The assessment Information evening for Year 12 will be held on Tuesday, 30 October. All students are expected to be in attendance with at least one parent. Important information about HSC moderation, process, rules and procedures will be communicated. Strategies to deal with the intensities of Year 12 will be discussed and Assessment booklets will be distributed. Year 12 Reporting Period The Half Yearly reporting period for Year 12 began at the beginning of Term 4 2018. The Teaching and Learning Team feel it is appropriate for the reporting period to align with the Courses students were studying. This will impact when students receive awards, the accumulation of detentions and absences. Mr Paul Burns Director of Teaching and Learning (7-12) Orientation Day 2018 (O Day) ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Our annual Orientation & Open Day is coming up soon on Saturday, 27 October 2018 commencing at 9.00 am. Pastoral Happenings - Senior Years (9-12) ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ A warm welcome back for Term 4! Despite being the final Term of the year, there is also a significant degree of transition which is taking place as students move into new stages of their College Years and personal growth. The final week of Term 3 was a special one for the College as Year 12 students graduated and Year 11 students completed their Preliminary studies. The following photos show a couple of the celebratory activities: Year 12 morning tea (hosted by Year 11), Staff vs Students Oz-Tag game, Mufti Day (Year 11 fundraiser for Breast Cancer Foundation). We continue to uphold Year 12 in prayer as they study and complete their final exams. “Trust beyond the borders of what I can see, courage to believe in what is greater than me.” 9-10 Pastoral Care The focus of Pastoral Care sessions this Term will be on ’digital practice’. Students will work through a series of modules and group activities adopted from a digital and social health program called ‘The Yes Project’. This has been recently developed by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. The aim of the program is for students to firstly reflect on their own digital and social practices - ME, focus on their interactions and support with friends and peers - YOU, and finally, explore and plan for changes which may take place within their environments - WE. The program encourages young people to develop their ethical, personal and social capabilities. I look forward to sharing with you further regarding this program and providing some useful resources, as parents play a key role in supporting young people to navigate their way within our digital world. For information on eSafety guidance for parents, feel free to visit: https://esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent Year 10 Camp Out Year 10 students will have the opportunity to camp out at the College this Friday night. This activity is a Pastoral Care initiative which occurred last year and we hope to continue for future year groups. The aim of this activity is for students to build on the positive relationships they have formed within their year group. This event is not compulsory and so it is not included in the service fee but it will be beneficial for team building. I would like to thank in advance, Mr Russell for organising this activity, and Mrs Hart, Mrs Rockwell and Mr Madden for their attendance and support. Mrs Emily Madden Senior Pastoral Care Coordinator (9-12)
Pastoral Matters - Middle Years (5-8) _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Father to Father As a father of four I’m often reflecting on just how I’m shaping up as the dependable, loving and guiding parent I always imagined I’d be. Suffice to say, and my wife will attest, there are days where I do this better than others. There are moments when I fall short and even days where it all seems too much. Fatherhood I have found, is an interesting journey and so I thought this week I would share some insights from one father to another. The following excerpt comes from www.parentingideas.com.au and was written by Michael Grose. As a father and father-in-law to three young dads it’s great to see each of them embrace the life-changing nature of fatherhood, and becoming fully involved in their children’s lives. I see myself in these young fathers, and in doing so I’d like to guide them from making the same fathering mistakes that I did. I know young dads are loathing to take fathering advice from a member of the previous generation so I’ll give the following advice to my younger self instead: 1. Play to your strengths. Men generally parent differently to women, based on their biology. Fathers often parent in a more active or action-oriented way than mothers so games, play and physical activity are important parts of a man’s parenting repertoire. Your partner may not always appreciate your more active approach particularly if you play with kids just before bed-time, then leave it to her to calm them down. Practical advice: Be yourself, but be smart about it! 2. Lighten up – don’t take yourself too seriously. It’s easy to get caught up with your own importance, taking yourself and your work too seriously. For many men a bad day at work translates into poor, or at best, distracted experiences when they’re with their families. Consider putting a strategy in place, such as exercise, that will help you leave work and the moods they engender behind. Practical advice: Be present in mind as well as in body when you’re with your kids. 3. Have something in common with each child. It would be wonderful to say that you can always connect with your kids, but family-life is not that straight-forward. There’ll always be a child whom we struggle to connect with or a developmental stage when a child seems alien to you. In these cases and times it helps if you share a common interest (such as shared love of sport or music) with a child so that you have something that will bring you together, even though you may not always see eye to eye. Practical advice: Be prepared to take an interest, in your child’s interests. 4. Take it easy on your son. Many dads are tough on their boys and have expectations way above their son’s interest and ability levels. It helps to remember that it takes a little longer for a boy to mature. Resist the temptation to turn every game and every joint activity into a lesson and avoid giving advice when all your son wants is some understanding. Practical advice: See the boy as he is now, not the future man when you spend time with your son. 5. Enjoy the outdoors with your daughter. The biological nature of fathering causes most men to be very protective of their daughters. But that doesn’t mean you should put your daughter on a pedestal and treat her like a little princess. Expect a lot from her. Play with her, and get her outside into nature as it will do wonders for her confidence levels. Practical advice: Enjoy spending time with your daughters on a daily basis. I encourage you to spend some time reflecting on the contribution that men make to the lives of their children. It’s a very personal reflection as each man’s experience of fathering is as unique as the children they are rais- ing. I invite you to reflect on your own fathering as well as the contribution that fathers - whether your own dad or someone else’s father - have made to your own life. Taster Day Tomorrow – Friday, 19 October Tomorrow Friday, 19 October 44 new students will visit the College for our annual Taster Day. Taster Day is a great opportunity for our 2019 Year 7 students to spend the day at WAC and get to know their Year Patrons and other members of staff. The group will spend time in a number of exciting classes as well as enjoy a sausage sandwich with our current Year 6. Stay tuned for photos and highlights in next week’s Waratah Weekly. Mr Peter Hazlewood Middle Pastoral Care Coordinator (5-8)

PDHPE: Sexual Health ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Throughout Term 4, Year 9 will be studying a unit on Sexual Health as part of the PDHPE course. In this unit students will research the characteristics of equal and respectful relationships in light that God made us relational and sexual beings, created as male and female. During the unit students will investigate God’s design and purpose for sex and how this informs sexual choices. As part of the unit students will examine consequences of poor sexual decisions such as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) and management of sexual health such as contraception. If you have any questions in regards to the unit, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s PDHPE teacher or Mr Hewitt (PDHPE Coordinator).
