concerns.

inform us of any errors so that certificates can be printed correctly.

Times - Times are given for the start of each session. Interval times are given as
guidance only.

Trophies - Trophies will be awarded to performers gaining Commended or above.
Trophies will be presented at the Festival Concert on Saturday 16 March at The
Cinema, Newton Stewart, except for school classes. Trophies are listed alongside
the main class name. Where more than one trophy is awarded for performers in a
class, the relevant grades are listed with each trophy. Some trophies are competed
for across a number of classes, hence the same trophy can appear against several
classes. Some classes do not as yet have a trophy; please speak to any committee
member if you would like to contribute a trophy for one or more of these classes. A list
of class and trophy winners will be posted on the website at the end of the week.

which are £5 for adults and free for children and performers, can be reserved by
contacting Christina Montgomery on 07814 084899 or bought at the door on the day.
Winners will be contacted during the week if they are needed in the concert.

FESTIVAL ADJUDICATORS

Stewart Fyffe DRSAM LTCL
Stewart trained in Singing and Voice Production at the Royal Scottish Academy of
Music (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) where he also studied Piano and
Trombone. Following many years teaching for the local authority during which time
he had extensive experience of solo, choral and orchestral work, both performing and
conducting, he now has an extensive private teaching practice. Stewart is currently the
conductor of a local community choir of around 70 singers, the organist/choir leader of
his local Parish Church and works as a tutor with the Dundee branch of the National
Youth Choir of Scotland where he specialises in working with boys’ voices. Having a
strong interest in Scottish traditional music - for a number of years he was a member of
the local Gaelic Choir - in addition to his work with the Festival Federation, Stewart is
regularly invited to adjudicate vocal, choral and instrumental classes at Gaelic Mods.

John Foster
John studied piano with Kendall Taylor and Dennis Matthews (masterclasses). He has
worked extensively as accompanist for singers and instrumentalists and in chamber
groups, including the Lydian Trio. He has performed in UK, Jersey, France, Germany
and Hong Kong, (including radio broadcasts). John taught for 16 years at RNCM Junior
College and is a former Director of St Cecilia Chamber Music Trust. Currently, he
performs, teaches/coaches pianists and singers, is an adjudicator for The British and
International Federation of Festivals and is an ABRSM grade and diploma examiner,
trainer and moderator, nationally and internationally

Carol Schroder
Working in the professional theatre, television and cabaret, Carol produced her one
woman show. She teaches presentation skills in commerce and industry and has
taught ESL, SEN and drama at schools and colleges including Guildford School of
Acting, Grandison College and, for 22 years, at Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts
and, until 2007, Croham Hurst School, Croydon. Carol is an adjudicator for The British
and International Federation of Festivals and examines for LAMDA throughout the UK,
Ireland and worldwide. Writing “The Discussion” 1&2 for LAMDA she contributed to its
Musical Theatre syllabus and “Musical Theatre – Exploring The World Through Song”.
She was a trustee of Voice Care Network UK.

Walter Cowan
Walter Cowan, a native of Annan, was first taught the bagpipes by his father Jack
Cowan on his demob from the Army in 1946. He also received tuition from his uncle,
George Grant, a former Pipe Major in the Scots Guards, and Piobaireachd instruction
from Willie Bryson in Edinburgh. Walter was a member of the Annan Ex Service Club
Pipe Band from 1947 until his retiral in 1997, having been Pipe Major from 1964 until
1997. During this time he took the band from Grade 4 to Grade 1, winning the Grade

                                           36
2 World Championships in 1986 and Champion of Champions the same year. Walter
has also had a fairly successful solo piping career featuring in the prize list at all the
major competitions, the highlight of which was winning the silver medal and silver star
at the Argyllshire Gathering in 1982 and gaining Premier Grade status the same year.
On retiral from competing, Walter is now involved as a senior adjudicator with the Joint
Committee of Judges, the approved judging organisation. As a judge Walter has had
the privilege of adjudicating at all of the major competitions in the country, including the
Argyllshire Gathering, the Northern Meeting, the Cowal Gathering, the Glenfiddich at
Blair Castle and the London Piping Society. Walter has also previously adjudicated at
the Galloway Music Festival and is always delighted to be asked to adjudicate at this
local event.
