New York City set a new record with the lowest COVID levels since the pandemic began. President Biden declared June as “a national month of action” to get more people vaccinated by July 4. Thousands of pharmacies, including CVS, Rite-Aid and Walgreens/Duane Reade will stay open late every Friday in June in order to allow more Americans to get vaccinated. New York State adopted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Interim Public Health Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People. It relaxes the masking and social distancing requirements for “fully vaccinated” people in most locations. Masks should continue to be worn by unvaccinated people and in certain venues, including Pre-K to 12 schools, public transit, homeless shelters, correctional facilities, nursing homes, and healthcare settings. Immunocompromised people should consult with their physicians. All New Yorkers 75 years and older and those with disabilities are now eligible for at-home vaccination. Those interested can call 877-VAX-4NYC or sign up online at forms.cityofnewyork.us/f/home. The one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine is used for home vaccinations. New York State’s indoor social gathering limit was raised to 250, and the outdoor limit was capped at 500. Restaurants are now allowed to reach 100 percent capacity if five-foot-tall solid partitions are placed between tables. In private homes, 50 people will be able to gather indoors, up from 10. Key reopening dates May 24, Mayor de Blasio lifted several restrictions on special events, parades, and similar activities that require a permit from the New York City Street Activity Permit Office, the Parks Department, and the NYPD. The City is now able to issue permits for street fairs, events in parks, events that span more than one block, sound devices (even if there is a stage or video screen), and more. June 14, NYC senior centers will reopen to both vaccinated and unvaccinated seniors, with social distancing measures in effect. Beginning immediately, senior centers will be open to outdoor activities. Check your senior center’s website for details. September 14, Broadway theaters are ready to reopen at 100% capacity, and tickets are now on sale. Heart reaction probed as possible rare vaccine link in teens June 4, 2021, apnews.com, by Lindsey Tanner and Lauran Neergaard Health authorities are trying to determine whether heart inflammation that can occur along with many types of infections could also be a rare side effect in teens and young adults after the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine. An article on seven U.S. teen boys in several states, published online Friday in Pediatrics, is among the latest reports of heart inflammation discovered after COVID-19 4
vaccination, though a link to the vaccine has not been proven....The boys, aged 14 to 19, received Pfizer shots in April or May and developed chest pain within a few days. Heart imaging tests showed a type of heart muscle inflammation called myocarditis. None were critically ill. All were healthy enough to be sent home after two to six days in the hospital...more follow-up is needed to determine how the seven fare but that it’s likely the heart changes were temporary. IMPORTANT: There is still no cure for COVID-19. Stop the spread using a layered approach: • Get vaccinated • Wear face coverings when you are with people who are not vaccinated or if you are not vaccinated (consult your physician if you are immunocompromised) • maintain distance (6 feet between people who are not in the same household) • practice good hand hygiene • stay home if sick (seek care if you feel seriously ill) When community rates of infection are high, limit non-essential activities, travel and indoor gatherings with people who are not vaccinated. NYS travel advisory coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-travel-advisory. Vaccinations Vaccinations are free, and are now readily available. All New Yorkers age 12+ are eligible. Public health officials recommend getting vaccinated as soon as you are eligible. Currently the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are being administered. The J&J is a one-shot vaccine. Only the Pfizer vaccine has been approved for people age 12 - 17. The NYC Vaccine Finder site now tells you everywhere in NYC that vaccinations are available and the type of vaccination offered vaccinefinder.nyc.gov. Pharmacies participating in the vaccinations are Walgreens/Duane Reade, RiteAid and CVS. You can also set up accounts on their websites, and request alerts. RiteAid is offering walk- in vaccinations. Some independent pharmacies are also offering vaccinations, including HealthSource on 34th Street. If you prefer to be vaccinated by your primary care physician, some doctors’ offices are getting supplies of the vaccinations. Contact your doctor. (no appointment needed) ALL New Yorkers can now get their COVID-19 vaccine without an appointment at city-run and state-run sites across the city. To find a walk-up vaccination site near you, visit on.nyc.gov/walkupvax or call 877-829-4692. Additional, site-specific information can be found on nyc.gov/vaccinefinder. New Yorkers must show proof of age upon arrival at the vaccination site. 6
Johnson & Johnson vaccinations have resumed as of April 23, 2021. The main risk is for women under 50 years of age, and they can take the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, if they are worried about the risk. CDC/FDA statement cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019- ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/janssen.html. What to Do If You Received the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine. The risk of developing a blood clot is very low and that risk will decrease over time. Contact your healthcare provider and seek medical treatment urgently if you develop any of the following symptoms: severe headache, backache, new neurologic symptoms, severe abdominal pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling, tiny red spots on the skin (petechiae), or new or easy bruising. See the MHNA website page Vaccinations for useful links and phone numbers on how to determine your eligibility and schedule an appointment.
