Introduction to the course Welcome to A Level Business. This a linear course comprising of 10 units delivered across 2 years. In May/June 2022 your final assessments will consist of 3 x 2-hour exam papers of equal value. Currently we do not offer an AS level of this course and as such you must complete both years of study to gain a qualification. There is no coursework element. Formulae and key data There are several formulae that will be taught and used throughout the course. Unfortunately, you will not be provided with a formula sheet in your final exams. You will need to memorise the below formulae and more importantly be able to apply it and interpret the results. 4

The following pages outline the summer activities that we are asking you to complete before the new term starts in September. Summer work activity 1 Using this resource and the embedded links I would like you to explore the AQA site: Create a new electronic business folder on your laptop/memory stick and download the following: o Formulae and key data sheet o Models, theories and frameworks handbook o All 3 A Level papers from the 2018 exam series Then answer the following questions: 1. Describe each of the 3 papers and identify how they are different? 2. How many 25-mark questions will you be expected to answer across all 3 exams and which papers do they appear in? 3. What is the shortest mark question you will be expected to answer, and which paper does it appear in? 4. Do certain topics appear in specific exam papers? 5. Which paper has only one large case study insert? 17

Summer work activity 4 Please complete the following question. I have provided a structure to help you. To what extent do you believe that the spread of the coronavirus will negatively impact all UK businesses. Paragraph 1 – Discuss a range of businesses that may be negatively impacted and why? What does it depend on? What might each stage of these consequences go on to lead to? How will it impact different areas of the business and why? How will it impact different areas of the business and why? Paragraph 3 – Answer the question. Will all UK businesses be impacted negatively? If not, why and what might it all depend on? Summer work activity 5 Complete the following research activity. You will need to present your findings to the class at some point during the 1st term. 1. Select a company (picking a Public Limited Company (PLC) will make it easier to find information on the internet). 2. Research some basic facts: Research the term “Annual Accounts for your chosen PLC” Download the PDF Read the chairman’s and CEO message at front of the pack Look through the pack to find the financial information (Income statement) this will show the revenue and profit. Explain the following What does the business do? How large is it? Where is it based? What are its key objectives? (Hint: look in the Chairman’s statement in the annual report) 3. How successful is it? Give evidence (Think about numbers: sales revenue, profit, market share etc. and get facts and figures). 4. Has it become more or less successful over the last few years? (again, get evidence from annual report, compare finance for a few years) 5. What do you think are the key factors that affect its success and why? (Think about competitors, Government regulation, the economy, its financial situation etc.) 6. Evaluate what impact the coronavirus has had on this business? 27
