Central Applications Office Processes Application to undergraduate courses in Higher Education Institutions (HEI) Offers are issued and acceptances are recorded by the CAO CAO distributes the Handbook, Application Forms and information about the Application Process to schools and individuals All the information is available online also at: www.cao.ie WHAT IS THE CAO?
• Higher Education Institutions (Carlow College/any third level institution) • Information on courses is available from each HEI and prospectuses and websites should be consulted before making any application • Be sure to cover course level, awarding body, fees, learning outcomes, qualifications, subject areas, retention rates, graduate profiles, employment opportunities, facilities, learning supports when you are researching courses at any HEI HEI

Qualifications NFQ Levels Major Award Type When deciding on a course, you must make sure to check the Level 8 Honours Bachelor Degree (HD) minimum entry requirements and Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor Degree (DG) take note of any restrictions. Level 6 Higher Certificate (HC) It is extremely important that you take the time to review the courses available to you. You should also take some time to consider financial implications; consider course fees, CHOOSING COURSES accommodation, food, travel expenses etc.
www.cao.ie Applicants are encouraged to apply online. Applying online is cheaper and it prevents many of the errors commonly associated with completing a paper Application Form. In order to be fair to all applicants, closing dates are strict and therefore action should be taken in good time. READY TO APPLY
CAO Demo Application Carefully enter details such as your name, address, date of birth, schools attended etc. Your examination details must be entered with great care. If you learn nothing else from this presentation let it be this: place your course choices in genuine order of preference! There are two course choice lists (level 8 & level 6/7). Applicants may make up to 10 course choices on each list. You must enter the specific course code. Your choices on one list does not in any way affect your choices on the other list. They are considered two separate applications on one form. It is possible to receive on offer on both lists. You may then decide to accept either your level 8 or your level 6/7 offer. THE APPLICATION FORM
Most applicants will not be required to complete this section of the Application Form Applicants who will be required to complete this part of the Application Form include those who are applying on the grounds of mature years (over 23), and those presenting qualifications other than Irish Leaving Certificate or FETAC level 5/6. Detailed instructions for the completion of this part of the Application Form may be found in the Handbook. SPECIAL CATEGORIES
APPLICATION NUMBER • If you apply online your application number will appear on your Receipt of Online Application. • This number is important. It is private and will be used in every correspondence between you and the CAO for the rest of the year. • You will also be asked from your Application form when you login back in (online) for either change or mind or the offer and acceptance stage.
Statement of Application Before the end of May, you will receive a Statement of Application Record from the CAO as a final acknowledgement and to enable you to verify that all the information has been recorded completely and correctly. Check it carefully. If there is any error of omission amend the statement and return it to CAO. Are all the courses shown and in correct order? Are the codes correct? Are the exam numbers correct? Are all exams mentioned? APPLICATION RECORD

THE OFFER PROCESS • If you are entitled to an offer, you will be sent and Offer Notice by post. You will also receive and email and a text message if you have selected this option. DEFERRING A PLACE If you decide to defer an offer of a place you must write or email IMMEDIATELY to the Admissions Office of the HEI. You must give your name as it appears on your CAO application, quote your CAO application number and the course code of the offer you wish to defer. You must mark ‘Deferred Entry’ clearly on the envelope or in the subject line of the email. The letter or email must arrive in the Admissions Office at least two days before the reply date shown on the offer notice. The HEI will then communicate the decision with you and outline procedures to follow to retake your place the following year.
