Important steps during your doctorate individual application process / enrolement • only few departments with graduate schools • responsability of individual supervisor • enrolment and provisorial candidacy approved by vice-rector admission requirements / qualifying exams • MSc required (except: direct doctorate) • additional exams if scientific qualification not equivalent to ETH MSc program up to 4-5 exams during the 1st year (~ 20% of all students) research plan at the end of first year • research plan approved by supervisor (signed also by you) and the departments doctoral commity - submitted to doctoral administration • requirement for full candidacy for doctorate • research plan is part of reflecting on and doing the science of your doctoral project annual reporting • report annually to your supervisor on your progress • written feedback by the supervisor
Important steps during your doctorate doctoral studies • Doctoral students have to acquire at least 12 credits: at least 1/3 outside of their research field in agreement with the supervisor employment and salary • doctoral students are ETH employees (central HR and salary regulations) • important: employment and enrolment are distinct administrative aspects doctoral thesis and examination/defense • monographic or cumulative style of thesis (discussion with supervisor) • closed or public examination/defense (depending on department) Legal base: • ordinance on doctoral studies ETH Zurich * • rector’s implementation provision for ordinance on doctoral studies * • departemental detailed regulations on doctoral studies * • ordinance governing scientific employees at ETH Zurich * modified after Oct. 1, 2021
