HURRICANE FLORENCE RECOVERY The force of Hurricane Florence hit Camp properties hard in September 2018. An outpouring of support from our Camp family was critical ensuring we were ready for the Spring 2019 season. Piers at both Camps have been rebuilt using sustainable materials. BEFORE AFTER Before the final 72 hour approach of Florence, I reached out to Coach Kennedy and discussed the possibility of housing some responders. I was given a simple answer: ‘Whatever we can do to help, consider it done.’ This gave me assurance that the support from the Camps was there. Butler, Jr. and Alice Farrior Butler $10,000 - $24,999 Clifton L. Benson Charitable Foundation David A. and Ellen Rothschild Byck Anonymous (2) Best Roofing, Inc. GOLD STAR FUND Fin and Nancy Gaddy with their sons Brown and Charles. Fin Gaddy, a Camp Sea Gull father and alumnus, learned about a North Carolina wife and mother who lost her husband in service in Niger. He thought about his two sons and wondered what it would be like if they were left without a father. He was moved to action and wanted to help kids who lost a parent in combat. Partnering this new passion and his belief in the positive impact of Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer, Fin and Nancy Gaddy generously created a fund with the North Carolina Community Foundation called the Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer Gold Star Children’s Fund. The fund’s purpose is to financially send kids to Camp who have lost a parent in combat. Please reach out to MacKenzie Buice for more information at MacKenzie.Buice@Seagull-Seafarer.org or (919) 719-9666. I speak from experience when I say that there is no better place for children to grieve, grow and heal from this type of pain than within the realms of Seafarer’s gates. In 2011, two months after my father was killed in Afghanistan, my mom dropped me off for a month of summer camp at Seafarer. I had the most amazing summer of my life and returned for many summers. This place changes lives for the better, and I am so excited that other children who have lost a parent in service will be able to begin their healing at this amazing place. – Katie Palmer, Seafarer alumna 18 ANCHORLINE | SPRING 2019
