LAKE RIDGE ACADEMY 2018 SUMMER PROGRAMS JUNE 11 – JULY 20 A diverse and dynamic program offering full and half day experiences open to all area students! Come join us to explore, experience, create, think and have fun! Program Length We offer six weeks of summer program options from June 11 – July 20, 2018. Camps and classes are offered in one to six week blocks. There will be no classes held on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 in observance of Independence Day. Daily Schedule The day includes half (9:00 am – 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm) and full day (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) sessions, before and after-school care, and a supervised lunch. Registration Complete registration forms will be accepted by mail or in person to the Business Office during regular business hours. PDF registration forms are available for download from www.lakeridgeacademy.org/summerprograms. Registration will be confirmed after June 1. Tuition and Cancellation/Withdrawal Tuition must be paid with registration. Prices vary by class. INSIDE Please see class descriptions for program fees. Courses 2018 Summer Program Details 2–3 with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled no later than Discovery Camps (Full & Half Day, K* – 4th) 4 June 1, and a full refund of tuition will be made. Those cancelling or withdrawing from a class will be subject to a Fine Arts & Technology Camps 5–7 fee of 10% of the total tuition or $50.00, whichever is Environmental & Experiential Camps 8–9 greater. No refunds of tuition will be made after June 8. Academic Camps (including courses for credit) 10 – 11 Lake Ridge Academy reserves the right to dismiss a Chess Camp (USA Chess) 11 student for inappropriate behavior with no refund for the tuition paid. Extended Day Before and after-school supervision is available for a fee of $7.50 per hour. Extended Day times are from 8:00 am – 9:00 am and from 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm. Extended Day is operated by experienced Lake Ridge Academy faculty and staff. You may register for Extended Day as the need arises. Billing is handled through the Business Office. Health & Wellness During the Summer Program, there is NO NURSE on duty. In the event of an emergency, 911 will be contacted. Lunch/Snacks Parents are responsible for providing their child with a lunch (including beverage). Refrigeration is available. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided by Lake Ridge Academy. Class Size Personalized attention is an important feature of the Summer Program; therefore, class size is limited and set by the Summer Program Director. Instructors Most summer programs are taught by Lake Ridge Academy faculty. All of our instructors are certified teaching professionals or highly experienced in their field of instruction. In many programs, a Lake Ridge Academy Upper School student or graduate will serve as a counselor/assistant. Field Trips Several camps and classes will be taking field trips. DISCOVERY CAMPS K*–4th Discovery Camps are multi-disciplinary day camps designed to provide children with an enriching, and rewarding learning experience in an environment of summer fun. Campers will encounter a variety of hands- on learning experiences each week, and they will try new things, visit new places, and meet new people all under the guidance of experienced, caring, Lake Ridge Academy faculty and staff. Discovery Camps will be open for students entering grade 1 – 4, with admitted Lake Ridge Academy Kindergartners invited to join the fun! Discovery Camps are led by Mrs. Jennifer Szwagulak, Mrs. Kristy Rodriguez, and other Lake Ridge Academy faculty— all Lake Ridge Academy Summer Program veterans. Teachers are assisted by camp counselors, consisting of both upper school and college students. Week 1: June 11 – 15: Artist for A Week Calling all budding Picassos, Monets, Jan Bretts, and Tomie DePaolas! Throughout the week, students will participate in many artistic activities including: making puppets, painting, sculpting clay, creating illustrations and more! Students will learn about famous masters of classical art, as well as illustrators of modern children’s literature. This week includes our weekly Water Day, a field trip to the beautiful Oberlin College Art Museum and a fun side trip to SplashZone! Week 2: June 18 – 22: Curtain Up! Drama Camp (Full Day only) Week 5: July 9 – 13: Space Camp Led by Lake Ridge Academy Drama Teacher, Mrs. Kristy Rodriguez, Get ready to blast off with a week of out-of-this-world space this week introduces students to the stage. Students will sing, dance, exploration! FINE ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY CAMPS Art Camp Students will work with ceramics, prints, wire sculptures, painting, and drawing using a multitude of mediums, and materials available in the art room. This camp is an opportunity to fine tune artistic skills and to learn to make aesthetic decisions about personal works of art. Consider joining this class where you will utilize Sketchup to create objects in virtual space and then see them printed on one of Lake Ridge Academy’s 3D printers. Examples have included airfoil test sections, various chess pieces, and even the ancient Greek Temple of Venus. ENVIRONMENTAL AND EXPERIENTIAL CAMPS Field and Fiber Fun Spend a week out in the fields and inside crafting! There will be daily goodies to make and taste! Each day we will be visiting the wooded areas and cleared paths on our campus collecting supplies for our crafts. In addition, we will be reusing old bottles, yarn, felt and thread in new and creative ways. At the end of the week, we will be designing gardens for fairies and trolls. Campers should arrive each day with bug spray, boots, water bottle, sun screen and an extra set of clothes. Ever thought about learning to tie your own flies or building your own fishing pole? Spend wonderful summer days around our school pond, on nearby rivers, and on the lake learning to bait a line, use a spin lure, and to cast a fly fishing rod. Students receive instruction and guided practice as needed. The class will also focus on learning about local fish anatomy, habitat, behavior and food resources. As we will be on and off campus, future ichthyologists should dress for the weather, bring a life vest, snack and their patience. ACADEMIC CAMPS The Historian’s Toolbox 2018 This class is designed for middle school students who are interested in learning and refining strategies for historical reading and writing. The first half of each session will focus on learning close reading strategies for nonfiction texts using Notice and Note’s 3 Big Questions and 5 Nonfiction signposts. The second half of each session will focus on students developing key skills for investigating historical questions, and analyzing primary and secondary source documents with the purpose of improving their research and writing skills. This course will provide students with the necessary tools to confidently approach historical reading and writing in middle school. These signposts alert students to significant moments in the text, and give them strategies to explore the texts and find evidence to support their interpretations. In the second half of each session, students will learn and practice concrete writing strategies that they can apply to all subjects and classes.
