WELCOME TO THE 15th ANNUAL HOODOO 500 ULTRAMARATHON BICYCLE RACE! SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Thursday, August 26th • 500-Mile Stage Race check-in: 3pm to 5pm • Mandatory Stage Race Pre-Race Meeting: 5:15pm Friday, August 27th • 500-Mile Stage Race Start: 7am • 500-Mile and 300-Mile Racer check-in & Voyager/Nomad bicycle inspection: 2pm to 5pm • Mandatory Pre-Race Meeting: 5:15pm Saturday, August 28th • Voyager and Nomad Start: 5am • Solo Start: 7am • Two-Person and 4-Person Relay Teams Start: 9am • Stage Race Escalante Start: 7am Sunday, August 29th • Stage Race Panguitch Start: 7am • Race Ends for Hoodoo 300 nonstop race: 10am Monday, August 30th • Race Ends for all remaining distances and divisions: 7am • Post-Race Banquet Breakfast / Awards Ceremony: 9am at Abbey Inn. 16th ANNUAL HOODOO 500 August 26-29, 2022! GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Telephone Numbers • CHECK-IN AT UNMANNED TIME STATIONS: TEXT (818) 624-4544. The preferred method is text message. If your text isn’t working you may send an email to embassy@planetultra.com or call in. 1. Your text must include your racer or team name, the Time Station number and the time your racer went through (in military time please). 2. If phoning in, clearly state your racer or team name; the Time Station number, and the time your racer went through (in military time). 3. Email or text-message reporting is not allowed from the last Time Station at the top of Snow Canyon. Racer or their crew must call in to race HQ as soon as the racer begins the descent down Snow Canyon. • EMERGENCY & RACE DIRECTOR CONTACT: 1. (Last resort) - Race Headquarters at Best Western Abbey Inn - (435) 652-1234 Ask for Deborah Bowling Route Sheet Abbreviations R – Right L – Left X – Cross BR – Stay Right BL – Bear Left TL – Traffic Light SS – Stop Sign T-int – T-intersection TS – Time Station Names of towns/cities traveled through are in italics and underlined. Time Station information is in bold-type. UnOfficial Official Rules Additions: For all racers: The traffic light at the intersection of Blackridge and Bluff Street (where racers make the final left turn onto Bluff Street), will not change to green for a cyclist. Between 8am and 11pm, if a car is not present to trip the light, racers must push the button at the cross-walk and wait for the light to turn. After 11pm, racers may treat the red light as a stop sign and proceed when safe to do so. 3
CREW DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM START TO 1st RACER SUPPORT POINT Please use the driving directions below to meet your racer. Mandatory 1-hour penalty for driving on the route through St. George/Bloomington. Race Start to Beginning of Rider Support: Exit Best Western Abbey Inn from the rear of the hotel RIGHT onto Main Street. Go .2 miles and turn LEFT onto Bluff Street; then stay to the right. Turn RIGHT to enter I-15 South. Take Exit 2 for UT-7 / Southern Parkway. Keep left at the fork, then turn left to enter UT-7 (towards St. George Airport). Take the River Road exit and park on the off-ramp shoulder to provide support to your rider. CREW DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM TOP OF SNOW CANYON TO FINISH LINE Support Crews may not follow the route once their racer descends Snow Canyon. Any Crew caught on the route after the turn-off to Snow Canyon (without express permission from the Race Directors) will cause their racer(s) to be disqualified. No exceptions. Please make sure your racer is wearing the pink wristband before they head down Snow Canyon. Don’t forget to call Race Headquarters and report that your racer(s) is heading down Snow Canyon. Snow Canyon To Race Finish at Best Western Abbey Inn: Exit Snow Canyon parking area RIGHT onto Hwy 18 towards St. George. Hwy 18 becomes N. Bluff Street. The Abbey Inn is 10.6 miles from the top of Snow Canyon on the left side of the road. Do not, under any circumstances, follow your racer down Snow Canyon. This is a non-negotiable DQ offense. Our Snow Canyon permit allows only racers, and specifically forbids cars. Any vehicles other than bikes descending Snow Canyon will put the future of this section of the route in jeopardy. Check-in at the Finish Line and wait for your racers there! 4
WHO’S WHO OF THE HOODOO - HALL OF FAME INDUCTION On this, the 15th Anniversary of the Hoodoo 500, we’re continuing the tradition of honoring the growing number of cyclists who have completed the Hoodoo 500 on five occasions. ALEXIS BERTHILLIER Mountain View, CA Alexis has three times won and set course records for the 500 non-stop 2-man division. He has also completed our 500 stage race Solo and 300 non-stop Solo. This year we welcome Alexis as a crew-member. 5
STEVE MEICHTRY West Hills, CA Steve is our most versatile Hall-of-Famer, completing various distances and divisions. He has raced 500 non-stop Solo, Voyager and on a 2-man team. He raced Solo 500 stage race and set a record for the 300 Nomad 60+ division. This year we welcome Steve to our 500-mile stage race on a 2-man 70+ team, “Wise Owls.” 6
ROBERT MUTEL Solon, IA Robert completed our 300 stage race five times, winning his age group each year. From 2017-2019 he set new course records in the 70+ division. This year we welcome Robert again to the 300 Stage Race; and expect a strong course record on our new route. 7
JULIAN SCHAFER Las Vegas, NV Julian completed our 500 stage once, 300 stage race three times, and last year participated virtually, completing a 300-stage on his own challenging route in Las Vegas. This year we welcome Julian again to our 300 stage race. 8
JEANINE SPENCE Fresno, CA Of her 5 Hoodoo appearances, Jeanine has four 1st place finishes: Once on a 4-women relay, once on a 4-mixed relay, and twice on a 2-women relay. She also took 2nd place on a 2-mixed relay. This year we welcome Jeanine as part of a 4-women 50+ relay. Shelby Weber is going for her 5th finishes in 2021! Ride strong! 9
JULY 2021 AUGUST 2021 SEPTEMBER 2021 The Race Directors of the 3 most challenging, most scenic, and all around greatest 500+ mile races in the world are excited to join together to support and promote each other’s events, and to provide meaningful, inspiring and memorable experiences for YOU. Special recognition, a personalized award, accolades, kudos and a place in ultra-cycling history for racers who complete 2 out of 3 races in a calendar year. Any distance and division counts. Each one of these outstanding events is a qualifier for the Race Across America.
