Capilano University’s Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication is known for
the quality and industry-readiness of its graduates. We are proud of our students’
success in winning provincial, national and international design and illustration
awards, and of our program’s excellent record of graduate employment.

What makes us different?
Both online and at CapU’s beautiful North Vancouver campus, students are
welcomed into a supportive and thriving network of IDEA School of Design
students and graduates. Our program structure is unique as it offers many all-day
classes, ensuring high levels of peer support and faculty attention. Our goal is
to prepare students for a creative career doing what they love, whether that’s
graphic design, illustration, branding, packaging, advertising, interactive design,
digital entertainment or concept art. We reinforce career preparation with an
immersive eight-week practicum, arranged by faculty for each student in their
final year.

Help with tools and supplies
Tuition fees include tools and supplies students may keep when they graduate.
Examples are laptops, cameras and substantial art materials for classes and
workshops. We also fund student memberships to the top three professional
associations for graphic designers, photographers and illustrators in Canada
(Graphic Designers of Canada, the Association of Registered Graphic Designers
and the Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators) as well as to the
Vancouver Art Gallery. Local events, field trips and many other incidentals that can
impact a student’s budget are included in fees.

How do you choose the right school?
Our best advice – research! Our most successful students reached out to working
professionals as well as current students and grads from different programs before
deciding to apply. They ultimately chose CapU’s Bachelor of Design for its proven
strengths: career focus, supportive environment, industry connections and overall
student success.

Noah Kawamura, 2020 grad

“The Bachelor of Design primes you for work in a creative field. I found being
surrounded by talented peers and instructors both inspiring and incredibly
motivating. I’m so grateful for the skills, experiences, connections and friends
 I’ve gained through this program.”

Noah was successful in the Applied Arts Student Awards twice while in the
program and he also won a Registered Graphic Designer (RGD) Social Good
award in 2020. He is now working as a junior designer and art director (job title

Brynn Staples, 2020 grad

“It’s hard to sum up my time in the program in a single sentence, but if I had to do
it, I’d say this cheesy but true thing: IDEA gave me the edge the design industry
is looking for, but maybe more importantly, it gave me the creative family that I
 was looking for.”

Brynn won many awards while in the program, including a Jim Rimmer
Scholarship, merits for the Advertising & Design Club of Canada (ADCC) Student
Awards, and semi-finalist for the Adobe Design Student Awards and the Salazar
Awards. She is now working as Designer and Art Director at Full Punch Creative
Design & Advertising Agency.
