MENTAL AWARENESS FOUNDATION The ‘Walk for Awareness’ allows the Mental Awareness Foundation (MAF) to cast a spotlight on suicide prevention, depression & mental illness. The Foundation's objective is to raise awareness about mental illness and suicide prevention and funds that are donated to non-government community based mental health service providers which provide valuable support and assistance to individuals with lived experience, including crisis intervention. The WFA is the Foundation's signature community event and provides an informative and fun environment to enable conversations about topics that are traditionally stigmatised.
FOUNDERS OF MAF & WFA Brisbane brothers – Wesley and Tudor Vasile – lost two friends, Christian and David, to suicide. Christian and David were in the prime of their lives, were wonderful friends and loved by all. Their passing was unforeseen and heartbreakingly devastating for everyone who knew them. The Walk for Awareness (WFA) was designed to bring a group of people together to discuss depression and suicide, and the conclusion of the group was that suicide was a taboo subject . Approximately 100 family and friends participated in the inaugural tribute walk in 2011 to honour Christian and David. Wes and Tudor realised they wanted answers to the following questions and it is from discussions within their friendship circle the MAF and WFA was created: • Why had Christian and David dealt with their inner demons alone and not reached out to family and friends for help? • Why are the topics of mental illness and suicide shrouded in stigma and taboo? • Why are people uncomfortable in talking about these topics, especially amongst men and after the loss of a loved one? The annual WFA brings people together in a friendly environment where the issues of mental health could be discussed openly with friends, family and supportive strangers. The Foundation believes that the matter surrounding mental illness and suicide The Vasile Brothers prevention and bereavement need to be talked about - not shut away.
