Every engineering student attending the event will be aware of your generous support and attribute your name with fond memories. However, recognition isn’t the only value in your sponsorship; you will most importantly be supporting the students through allowing this event to happen. Your generous donation will go towards ensuring that students have the opportunity to test their knowledge and technical skills learnt throughout their degree. This will allow students network with peers. All together, making more competent and successful future engineers to solve society’s problems. 4 August 2017 Dear Potential Sponsor: Re: 2019 Western Engineering Competition The University of Manitoba Engineering Society (UMES) will host the 2019 Western Engineering Competition (WEC) here in Winnipeg. This event provides an excellent opportunity for engineering students from across Western Canada to meet and compete in a variety of design and communication events. WEC gives students an opportunity to develop and practice their skills as engineers while having fun at the same time. WEC is just one example of the outstanding events organized by the students of UMES that add an important dimension to the engineering education available to students at the University of Manitoba. WEC gives students the opportunity to showcase their technical prowess, as well as a chance to meet with prominent engineers and engineering students from across Western Canada, establishing friends and networks that can last a lifetime. The competition is designed to refine students’ presentation, design and communication skills – all skills that complement their engineering studies to help them excel in their careers after graduation. To host and organize the WEC takes a team of dedicated and driven students – attributes inherent to our University of Manitoba engineering students. A well organized student team has been established to ensure that the WEC here in Winnipeg is the best ever and showcases Manitoba talent to the rest of Western Canada. To host this event requires substantial financial support beyond that available from competitor registration fees. I invite you to review the sponsorship package and discover how your organization can help maximize the success of the WEC. This sponsorship package describes the ways in which you can become involved in WEC and the benefits that will accrue from your sponsorship. However, the greatest benefit is that the dedicated and enthusiastic engineering students who attend this competition will associate your name with an enjoyable opportunity to practice engineering. On behalf of the WEC organizing committee and the Faculty of Engineering, we thank you for your interest in supporting engineering students and their future success. Sincerely, Jonathan Beddoes, Ph.D., P.Eng. Dean, Faculty of Engineering University of Manitoba
What is WEC? The Western Engineering Competition (WEC) is Western Canada’s largest undergraduate engi- neering competition, bringing together 11 applied science institutions for a five-day event. The competition consists of eight events, challenging engineering students to adapt and apply the technical and communication skills drawn from their degree. The competition highlights the diversity and wide range of the field, with competitors in the civil, electrical, mechanical, bio- system, and mining engineering disciplines. Each event is judged by industry professionals, and respective winning teams will qualify for the Canadian Engineering Competition. Contestants are provided the opportunity to compete in the following fast-paced, hands-on engineering compe- titions: • Senior Design • Junior Design • Consulting • Re-Engineering • Innovative Design • Impromtu Debate • Engineering Communications • Programming Participating Institutions Member schools of the Western Engineering Students’ Societies Teams (WESST) compete annually at WEC. Participating Societies are as follows: • British Columbia Institute of Technology • Simon Fraser University Burnaby • Simon Fraser University Surrey • University of Alberta • University of British Columbia Okanagan • University of Calgary • University of Manitoba • University of Northern British Columbia • University of Regina • University of Saskatchewan • University of Victoria
Individual Competitions Senior Design Senior Design challenges a team of four individuals to develope and implement a solution to a specific problem within 12 hours. The problem will be presented to each team the morning of the competition. At the conclusion of the time period each team will present their solutions to a panel of judges who will evaluate each design based on criteria such as creativity, cost effectiveness, feasibilty, etc. Junior Design Junior Design follows in the footsteps of Senior Design. It sees a team of four individuals developing a solution to a proposed problem with a limited timeframe in which to complete their design. This competition caters to en- gineering students in their first or second year of their degree. After completion of their design, each team will present to a panel of judges for evaluation. Consulting The Consulting competition presents a team of four indi- viduals with a real-world problem and figurative client. The team will need to devise the best solution for their respec- tive problem based of specific criteria in order to win the competition. The teams will then present to a panel of judges and submit a written report described their pro- posed solution. Re-Engineering Re-engineering tasks a team of two students to improve upon a previously existing product or design solution. Ev- ery year the competition displays a vast amount of creativ- ity as students present their idea with the same function- ality as the original in new and exciting ways. The design problem is revealed the morning of the competition and is later critiqued by a panel of judges.
Innovative Design Innovative design is vastly different from the other compe- titions as it allows teams of one to four students to de- velope a solution to a real world problem of their choosing prior to coming to WEC. This competition will have booths set up at the venue on the day of evaluation for peers and judges to walk around and critique other teams solutions. Impromptu Debate In teams of two, students debate a topic/resolution from a predetermined position. Each team will present their side of the debate and attempt to persuade the panel of judges to their side. The teams will need to construct their argue- ments effectively and convincingly in order to sway the judges and win the debate. Engineering Communications Competitors are asked to describe a technical subject in layman’s terms. They must consider the economic and en- vironmental aspects of their subject, and provide a persua- sive conclusion regarding the potential benefits, risks, and effects their subject has on the world. Judges will decide on the winner based on the content and delivery of the presentation. Programming The programming competition caters to the growing global market of professional quality engineering software. Each team will use the skills they’ve acquired throughout their programs combined with their project management skills in order to develope a solution to a provided prob- lem.
