ITCH’N TO STITCH Twenty-one lap blankets and 70 bears were delivered to Willow Creek Nursing home on Easton Avenue in Somerset insuring that all 90 residents would have something on Christmas day. The blankets were given to those who had no other relatives or contacts with the outside world. Thanks to Barbara Murphy for making the arrangement with Willow Creek and helping me to deliver our gifts. Also, thank you to Marge Reiman for helping to gather the bears for delivery. On that note, our stitchers can go back to making bears so we can replenish our supply for if and when we can get back to St. Peter’s Children’s Hospital. The song was cut from the film and was put back at the last minute only after the director fought for its reinstatement. As most of us know, the film begins with a tornado in Kansas which takes Dorothy Gale, her dog Toto, and the house in which they live, to the magical Land of Oz. Dorothy must find the Wizard of Oz if she has any hope of getting back to Kansas. As her house lands in Oz, she meets the Munchkins who welcome and help her. The 124 Munchkins were SOLUTION ON PAGE 33 specially recruited dwarfs but ten were actually young girls from 7 to 9 years old. When the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce decided to give the Munchkins their own star on Hollywood Boulevard in 2007, all the surviving Munchkins were invited. When some of those now full-grown women “Munchkins” responded to their invitations and appeared at the designated location, they were not included in the ceremony and were “sidelined as unwelcomed guests,” as one reporter wrote. Most of the Munchkins were paid $50 a week while Terry, the dog who played Toto, got $125 a week. As Dorothy travels along the Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard, she meets and makes friends with the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. Ray Bolger played the Scarecrow and Buddy Ebsen was to be the Tin Woodman. Unfortunately, Ebsen developed a serious allergy to the Tin Woodman makeup and was rushed to the hospital, unable to breathe and spent some time in an iron lung (remember those?). The makeup on Ebsen contained aluminum dust. Jack Haley, who replaced Ebsen, was never told of the incident or why Ebsen left the cast but the makeup was quietly changed. There were a number of other environmental issues that occurred while filming. In the scene in which Dorothy falls asleep in the poppy field, the “snow” used was actually 100% industrial grade asbestos even though some of the dangers of asbestos were already known when the film was being made. The Scarecrow’s face was made to appear to be burlap by using a rubber mask with a woven burlap pattern on it. The mask left marks on Ray Bolger’s face which didn’t completely disappear until a year after the film was completed. Bert Lahr’s lion costume was the real thing, a 90-pound lion skin. Since 1938 movie lighting often meant that sets were over 100 degrees F. Lahr’s sweat a lot and, by the end of the day, it took two people to dry it out for the next day’s shooting. The Wicked Witch of the West, Margaret Hamilton, was badly burned when her cape was caught in a platform intended to make her “disappear” in a puff of red smoke and fire. Her green makeup, which contained copper, heated up and caused serious burns on her hands and face. She was hospitalized, spent six weeks recovering, and refused to do any scenes that included fire. Ironically, a stunt-double for her was injured in yet another fire-related scene later in the production. She had a slightly green face for months. Jack Haley’s Tin Woodman’s costume was so stiff and uncomfortable that a special tilt board had to be built so that he could lean on it to rest. In later years he told stories about all the other near-miss injuries that “almost” happened because of the costume. A less dangerous environmental issue had to do with the green horses of the Emerald City. They were coated in green Jell-O powder.
