Welcome to the latest Copper Press - Sept/Oct 2019 No. 31 Greetings to you all . Daylight savings has sprung into action and we are progressing nicely into summer. I am excited to see the village come ALIVE, both in the gardens (with new blooms and colour) and our residents getting out and about with the weather allowing more outdoors activities. Once the slightly unsettled nature of the showers and winds pass I am really looking forward to be able to get around the village and enjoy some of the fruits of a lovely summer up here on the hill. I continue to experience many firsts and my latest is the recruitment of our new sales manager – Moya Cleaver to our team. I would like to welcome Moya to the team and Village and know you will all extend a warm welcome to her also. Many of you have already had a chance to meet and chat to her already which is great. She brings a wealth of knowledge, which she will put to good use to facilitate our village sales enquiries. But with a nursing background also she is ideal for her involvement with the Living Well Apartments (LWA) as they come along. Her knowledge and skills will ensure that you and clients will get the best service and advise when the need to move into care or an apartments is required. I have been extremely pleased to hear of the success of the SAGO programme and that we have added an additional class with more “Tutors” to accommodate the demand. This is great news – one of our Arvida “Pillars of Health” is MOVING WELL, so this is great to see that you are actively engaging in this. We all know how vital staying fit & healthy is to our enjoyment of living well, so good on you all and keep SAYGO-ing. For those of you that are sports fans I know you are really enjoying the Rugby World Cup. GO THE ALL BLACKS !!!!! As we progress into the business end of this years tournament it is great to see how many of you are coming down and watching the games here in the centre. The new setup is working really well and it is great to see it being used and bring the village together. It was really hard on Monday morning when a few residents sat and watched a replay of the Japan/South Africa game. The sports Junkie in me just wanted to sit down and join them!!!- Sadly work was calling and what a terrible example that would make to the team….. so I carried on, but not without a few polite expletives. I know the semis, and if we make it – the Finals, will be great events and you will all get down and enjoy them… GO THE AB’s!!!!- wouldn’t it be fantastic to be triple world Champs. The LWA continues to bring us something to watch as it looms up out of the ground. I am excited each day as I come in to see what has changed. I am sure you are enjoying the progress also, however I must again thank all of you who are affected by it’s construction. At times it is unpleasant, and I thank you for your understanding at these times. “ As for the future, your task is not to foresee it but to enable it”. 1

DAFFODIL DAY - 28 AUGUST 2019 We had a wonderful turn out, supported by so many residents. Coming together to acknowledge and share time as we raised funds for the Cancer Society. We had amazing prizes for our raffle. With movie passes donated by Event Cinema, a Super Value shopping voucher, and a gift basket from Pyes Pa Pharmacy. Plus two great Gift Baskets compiled by Tracy, who always buys lovely personal goodies. This contributed to raising the most funds ever for Copper Crests’ annual fund raiser. Congratulations to those prize winners: Michael Furminger, Pam Johnson, Gay Barker and Ngaire Ray. Everyone met for a big morning tea, with $5 pp donated to the Cancer Society. The tables were beautifully decorated with displays prepared by June Dombroski, using Maree Gorham’s handmade colourful fabric daffodils. These too, were a sell-out among the attendees. Cheryl Mason made her stunning sunshine bags and all money raised went to the Cancer Society. With well over sixty residents on a sunny spring morning, there were delightful savouries and plenty of sweet cupcakes and carrot cake for everyone. We had a speaker, Ellen Fisher, on behalf of the cancer society, giving a lovely speech and thanked us for our generous support. We also had a surprise guest and prize generously donated on the day. Sean Wood, from Creative Kitchens and Interiors. (Tracy’s partner) kindly gifted a handmade coffee table to be made to their specifications. Won by Shirley Carter. Sean also matched what we’d raised, so far, that day. We generously raised an amazing $965.00. Thank you to the Social Committee for serving the lovely morning tea, provided by our Village Management. Well done Copper Crest residents! 3
LADIES LUNCHEON Ladies Luncheon Our Ladies go out to lunch once a month visiting cafes, restaurants in Tauranga and out of town. Twenty six of our lovely Ladies went by bus leaving at 9.30am on Wednesday 11th September visiting a "mystery factory", (and it wasn't the Chocolate factory)! in Whakatane. Taken through by the owners of the Bonbon factory who make Health and Beauty products - that can all be found in our kitchens. Many of us buying early Christmas gifts for the families. Then it was off to the Red Barn Bakery & Cafe for our leisurely lunches, visiting the craft shop attached to the Red Barn. Then coming home we had a lovely "Tiki Tour" around the Mount and Tauranga. Arriving at Copper Crest 3.45pm. Luckily enough it was not raining ☺ I just discovered my age group! I am a Seenager (senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I don’t have to go to school or work I get an allowance every month. I have my own pad. I don’t have a curfew. I have a driver’s license and my own car. And I don’t have acne. Life is Good! Also, you will feel much more intelligent after reading this, if you are a Seenager. Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains. Scientists believe this also makes you hard of hearing as it puts pressure on your inner ear. Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature’s way of making older people do more exercise. SO THERE!! I have more friends I should send this to, but right now I can’t remember their names. 4
WOW in WELLINGTON Upcoming Events…. • 5 November - Melbourne Cup Day 2.30pm onwards • 15/16 November - Open Days 10am-3pm • 24 November - Sunday Roast @ 1pm WOW IN WELLINGTON A couple of people suggested to Betty Wakelin (Villa 141) that she could organise a trip to Wellington to the World of Wearable Art show and from that comment the trip happened! On Wednesday 9th October 22 residents set off on a 2 night trip away. We left Copper Crest by bus to Tauranga Airport and flew to Wellington for a 2 night stay at the Intercontinental Hotel. • 7/8 December - The highlight of the trip was of course the WOW extravaganza Open Days 10am-3pm which we went to on the 9th, our first night in Wellington. Our hotel was less than 5 minutes’ walk to the venue and we enjoyed a Pre • 4th December - Wow dinner at a nearby restaurant. Residents’ Christmas Then on to the show and our “Premium” seats. This year designs Dinner @ 6.00pm for the Wearable Art were submitted from 43 countries. The whole Entertainer Helen Riley experience was just ”out of this world” – beyond imagination. The Catered by Tasty Thyme music (though a bit loud for some) was themed to complement the drama of the designs, the dancers and the aerialists all combining to present an exceptionally world class show On Thursday the group had free time for sightseeing or “retail” therapy. At the end of the day we met in the bar for a drink to share experiences and then a special group dinner in the hotel din- ing room. An early start on Friday 11th October with shuttle buses collecting us from the hotel at 6.30am! to transfer to the Wellington Railway Station. The trip from Wellington to Hamilton on the Northern Ex- plorer train was another highlight of this short trip. Although a long day we all enjoyed the rail trip - good company (of course), good food at the on board café and the beautiful New Zea- land scenery. It was a fun day with lots of laughs along the way. Uza Bus collected us at Hamilton railway station and transported 22 tired but very happy residents back to Copper Crest. 5

The Copper Crest Forum – Report by Kerry Dalzell I took over responsibility for the Forum in March 2017. Up until then it had been under the care of Bill Reeves for some considerable time, upwards of 5 years. My immediate moves were to obtain assistance from other volunteers; and have obtained help from Brian York, Barry Partridge, Trevor Walker and, in recent times, from Dan Stevens. Other residents have also been helpful in supplying ideas and recommendations for interesting speakers, so the Forum continues to offer topics on a monthly basis excepting December/January – usually on the last Thursday of each month. The Forum was formerly known as the “Men’s Forum” but has been re-named as the “Copper Crest Forum” to make it more inclusive and welcoming of our lady residents. This move has been successful as the ladies do support us well. In the future we would like to have a lady or ladies on our organising committee to further cement-in the concept of equal status for all residents. What have we been doing over the last year? We have enjoyed the following arranged speakers and visits, and we also look forward to the immediate future out to the end of this year. 2018 Activity September - Mr Ian Galley, Orthopaedic Surgeon Barry Partridge October - Cancelled due late non-available speaker Kerry Dalzell November - Arvida Engineering Team – Village construction issues Brian York 2019 Activity February - Acorn Foundation Charity Trust - cancelled Trevor Walker March - Visit to Waihi Mine – a “highlight” visit Kerry Dalzell April - Mr Les Cheyne – Archaeologist on NZ early history Dan Stevens May - Mt Maunganui Private Museum visit Trevor Walker June - Mr Leon Wickham – Zespri Operations Manager Kerry Dalzell July - Mr Trevor Coleman – Future Insurance Issues Dan Stevens August - Mr Graeme Mills – Tauranga South Community Patrols Kerry Dalzell September - Mr Phil Wardale – Tauranga Marine Precinct projects Kerry Dalzell 2019 Balance to come: October - Medical Speaker on Dementia condition and care Dan Stevens November - Mrs Cheryl Dalzell – Recent travels in Ireland Kerry Dalzell We are always on the lookout for voluntary helpers and fresh ideas for speakers and visits. As my three - year tenure as Convenor comes to a close in March 2020, I look to an enthusiastic Village Resident to take over this rewarding role. I thank everyone for their interest and support. The picture left is the “Peoples Choice” photo taken by Jill Bickers, congratulations Jill. 7
TREE WALK - ROTORUA - 17th September A full bus, great meal and a really fantastic experience was enjoyed by Copper Cresters’ last month when we embarked on the Redwood Tree Walk. One has to say the weather didn’t look great when we set out for Rotorua around 4.30pm and it didn’t improve much as we merrily rolled along. However, lady luck was on our side. We stopped at the Good Eastern Tap House where we enjoyed a great meal (not sure about their beer selection though) and then onto the Tree Walk and the rain had stopped. This was a truly wonderful experience. Of course it was dark by the time we took to the trees and we were literally surrounded by what appeared to be glow worms but probably just cleverly placed lights. We all got out without any scrapes and the general comment we “love to do it again but in the daytime”. To anyone who has not undergone this experience I urge you to do so. John, Villa 108 8
WAIHI GOLDFIELDS TRAIN TRIP - 14th October Monday 14th October, a number of residents boarded a bus for a day out to Waihi, where we were to board a train and head to Waikino. It was too cold to sit out on the open carriage, which would have been lovely on a sunny day, but instead we took our seats in the 2 enclosed carriages. One of the carriages dated back to 1911 and had been beautifully restored to it’s former glory (at a cost of $90,000), by volunteers, which took them over 3 years to complete. We had the privilege, along with others, to travel in this restored carriage with it’s comfortable leather seats, dated light fittings and old- time parcel racks. Our trip of 6kms from Waihi to Waikino took about 30mins, where we all got off to enjoy a lovely morning tea at the Waikino Station Cafe, with all the sumptuous home baking to tempt us. At this point the train driver swapped the engine over to the other end of the train in readiness for our trip back to Waihi, where our bus awaited to continue our trip to the Waihi Beach RSA for our lunch break. As always, our meal was well received and it was nice to have a wine and sit and chat awhile before it was time to head back to Copper Crest. All in all a lovely day’s outing for everyone. For me it was a trip I’ve wanted to do for many years and now I can tick it off my Bucket List. Gloria, Villa 99 9
