Distance Learning Guidelines for Whanau
                Year 5/6, Term 3 Week 5

Dear Parents,

As teachers we appreciate your concerns as to how the recent
coronavirus outbreak might impact schools and your child’s
learning, so we will continue to provide you with some ideas to
help you continue your child’s education during school closures.

We also are aware that keeping children engaged in their
learning whilst at home is not easy and your children may be
feeling anxious or unsure at this time. We have prepared
activities for your child that can be completed both
independently and with adult support. Students may complete as
many or as few of the suggested activities within a week of
learning as is appropriate for them.

We appreciate your continued support during this time.

  Activity 1

  Reading:

 Read the journal about aiming to become ‘plastic-free’. Plastic Free Challenge – Level 2 text HERE
o Once you have done that, walk around your house and make a list of everything you
can see that is made from plastic or has plastic parts.
o Then create a mind map showing ways to reduce our use of plastic in everyday life (e.g.
use a refillable bottle instead of a single-use plastic bottle).

 Read the diary from Iris about her trip at sea with her family. Iris and Dog Star – Level 3 text HERE
o Use the text to try and answer the comprehension questions in full sentences. Remember to use capital letters
and full stops and don’t start any of your answers with ‘because’. Comprehension questions HERE.

Writing: Write a diary entry recounting a time when you took a trip with your family by land, air or sea. Explain
where you want, what you got up to, who you were with and how it made you feel and why. Try to use as many of
your senses as possible (see, smell, hear, taste, touch).

one in a sentence. If you don’t know what the word means use a dictionary to look it up or type it into Google.
Remember, all sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a piece of punctuation (full stop, question

Mouldy Apples
Materials:
• 1 apple cut into 4 equal pieces
                                                                                                                             Science
• 4 jars/clear containers
• Vinegar
• Salt Water
• Lemon Juice
Instructions:
• Put an apple piece in each container.
• Fill each container halfway with one of the liquids. Make sure the apple piece is covered in the liquid. The fourth
apple and container is your control group, so don’t add anything to that one.
• Keep the jars in a cool area for a 4-day period
• Observe apples for rot, mould, and any other changes.
How it Works:
Bacteria love to grow on things like fruit. When you put fruit in the refrigerator, the cold temperature slows down the
process. However, in this experiment the fruit is exposed to room temperature. Salt is a natural preserver because it
dehydrated the water from the apple, reducing the area where bacteria can grow and thrive. On the other hand, the
lemon juice was a perfect playground for bacteria to play because of the sugar.
Extra Experiments:
• Add a fifth apple piece and put it in the fridge or even the freezer for the 4-day period.
• Do the same exact experiment as the original but instead conduct it all in the refrigerator and see if the results
change.

Problem: You have been asked to design a simple Problem: The farmer has a water tank on his property. It is filled by
lifting device to lift an object for a building site. rainfall, but it is difficult to see just how much water is in the tank.
Criteria: Criteria:
 It can be however big or small you want  Try to build a device that will allow the farmer to see how much
depending on resources you have at home water is in the tank
(always ask an adult before you use  Use a bucket or bottle to simulate the water tank
something)  You may have to have a measurement out of the bucket
 It must lift an object and place it in a  How accurate is your water gauge? E.g. put 500ml in, what does
different location (it could just twist) your gauge indicate?

and dance to that flashcard. Pick music or songs that match the mood or emotion of the emojis. For example, play a peppy song for a
‘happy’ emoji and some slow music for a ‘sad’ emoji.

Drama - Play the drama game ‘One Word Whittle’. For One Word Whittle you will be having a whole conversation using one word. With
a partner or a group of 3, each person chooses their own word and you have to make up a whole conversation by speaking to each
other and think about tone and expression, using only these words. See if after the conversation, you can come up with a storyline of
