Volunteers of Oochigeas Winter 2018 DEAR OOCH VOLUNTEER, It’s hard to believe that Fall 2017 is already coming to a close – the temperature has dropped (brr!) and the leaves have fallen, but the Magic of Camp Ooch remains in full swing. From a Camp-a-thon in Ottawa, to a Ticats pep rally in Hamilton, to a cooking class in Kitchener, to four WACs in London and an epic start to our OOT8 In-Hospital program at SickKids – we have been having a ton of fun all over Ontario. Wherever you’ve been this season, thank you for your continued commitment to our campers and their families! Read on for exciting Ooch opportunities to keep your spirits warm this winter. WINTER 2018 PROGRAMS HAVE ARRIVED! Applications for winter volunteer programs will go live on Monday, November 27th at 9:00 a.m. For the first 24-hour period, all applications will be placed in a lottery system for desired programs. From November 28th until applications close on December 1st at midnight, all applications received will be on a first-come, first-served and as-needed basis. You can expect an email with your winter program confirmations no later than December 15th! 2018 WINTER PROGRAM BROCHURE Check out the camper brochure with Program Descriptions here. 2018 WINTER VOLUNTEER APPLICATION Select your Winter 2018 programs via CampSite under ‘Forms’, titled 2018 Winter Programs – Volunteer Application. Please have your staff dashboard login information ready. VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT: LOOKING AHEAD TO 2018! It requires the commitment of over 500 incredible volunteers to make our unique year-round Camp Ooch programs possible. As Ooch continues to expand programs across Ontario (particularly in Ottawa, London and Hamilton), we need to ensure our volunteer community grows too! We are actively recruiting candidates for our next group of Ooch volunteers, and we need your support in finding the very best and brightest. Remember, what makes the Ooch volunteer community so special is the diversity of role models we provide for kids so please invite others to join the Ooch family! IMPORTANT DATES • New Volunteer Applications will go live on December 1st, 2017 • Returning Volunteer Summer Applications will go live on January 1st, 2018 • Ooch Volunteer Info Night – Bring a Friend on January 23rd to Ooch Downtown • All applications will close on January 31st, 2018 HERE ARE WAYS YOU CAN HELP GROW OUR COMMUNITY: SPEAK! We are seeking speaking engagements to share the Magic of Ooch with others. If you think your workplace, fellow students, or organization would be interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities, let us know. We are especially looking to connect with community members in Hamilton, Ottawa and London. POST! POSTER! Is there an opportunity to place a recruitment poster in your office staff room, local library, or on a community centre bulletin board? Let us know and we’d be happy to provide some Ooch resources for you to share. MEET OUR NEW RECRUITS! Are you interested in helping select the next group of Ooch volunteers? We’d love for you to join the Volunteer Interview Team! Interviews will take place on many Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in January and February at Ooch Downtown. Please indicate your interest on your winter programs application. Mandatory training will take place on January 11th, 2018 If interested please email volunteer@ooch.org IMPORTANT UPDATE: VOLUNTEER MEDICAL SCREENING OOCH IS HIRING! Each year, Ooch requires volunteers to fill in health history medical Want even more forms available on the Staff Dashboard (CampSite) as part of the medical screening process. Recently, Ooch needed to revamp Camp in your life? the screening procedures to ensure they align with other Ontario Hospitals and Camps working with similar populations. With the Believe it or not, we intention of creating safer programming spaces for our vulnerable are already beginning campers, Ooch now requires all volunteers to submit a copy of their immunization records. This record is typically in the form of a to search for the yellow card, which you may already possess – if not, you can ask for an immunization record print out from your Doctor’s office. Public 2018 Summer Staff Health Ontario should also have record of these immunizations. This document will allow Ooch’s medical team to verify your immunizations Team and In-Hospital and confirm whether or not they are up to date. Program Interns! You can upload this immunization record, along with your Health History forms 1-4, under the Forms tab on the Staff Dashboard on Check out our website CampSite – titled “Immunization Record – All Volunteer”. If you have for summer job any questions or concerns about this policy, please feel free to reach out to Andrea (Nurse Coordinator) at medical@ooch.org. postings. OOCH IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION! For those of you who didn’t get a chance to experience Overnight Camp in 2017, we wanted to give you a quick tour of our beautiful spaces – Camper Cabins and Gatts’ Lodge. We are excited to share that Camp Ooch Muskoka is currently going through its final phase of construction! There will be lots of new spaces to explore in the upcoming summer, including our brand new MedShed, Staff Housing and the Slaight Music and Arts Centre. HOST AN EVENT AT OOCH DOWNTOWN! Did you know that Ooch Downtown is open for events and meetings? The recently renovated building at College and Bathurst offers a variety of unique meeting, dining and activity spaces for up to 140 people. Whether your event involves a formal boardroom meeting, a lecture hall setting, gathering on our rooftop patio, drinks and dancing, or putting on a climbing harness to tackle our indoor climbing wall – Ooch Downtown can accommodate your rental needs. OTHER WAYS TO HELP! ARE YOU A TEACHER, A STUDENT OR A PARENT Ooch wants to engage more students through our newly launched School Program! We know that teachers, parents and students are looking for meaningful ways to contribute to their community and a cause that makes a difference. To learn more about how you can give students opportunities to raise awareness and funds for kids with cancer, contact Teya at tvitko@ooch.org JOIN THE VOLUNTEER MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE AND GIVE KIDS WITH CANCER THE GIFT OF CAMP Until December 31, 2017 every donation our volunteer community makes will be matched by volunteer Pete Evans up to $25,000! Thank you to those who have already donated. Funds raised to date are over $6,000 so there is still a great opportunity to double the impact of your gift. With the holidays just around the corner, there are two easy ways to give: • Make a donation to Ooch in lieu of gift giving! – We’ll send out a card on your behalf • Join our monthly giving program and for the cost of one cup of coffee per week, you can make a meaningful contribution • Designate your annual United Way gift to Camp Ooch, by logging into the United Way’s portal and choosing Camp Ooch as a beneficiary Every dollar makes a difference and brings us one step closer to ensuring every child with cancer has the chance to experience the Magic of Ooch! VISIT SPORTINGLIFE10K.CA TORONTO AND OTTAWA This spring, take part in the Sporting Life XK in Toronto or for the first time in Ottawa. Funds raised at both events will support sending kids with cancer to Camp Ooch. Help give more kids with cancer what they need – the chance to be kids.
