Updates from Consulate General of India, Toronto Seminar on India's Economic Rise Cosulate General of India, Toronto in association with Canada-India Business Council and Lazaridis Institute, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo organised a Seminar on 'India's Economic Rise: Broadening & Deepening our Engagement'. Consul General Mr. Dinesh Bhatia delivered a powerful presentation titled 'India i.e. Bharat: Reinvigorated', introducing India and the abundance of business opportunities to a gathering of Professors, Tech Start-Up Leadership, Government Representatives, Students and representation from Indian companies present in Canada. He briefed the audience about the tremendous economic growth that India has witnessed and the sunshine sectors in India, which can be explored by Canadian Corporations, looking to expand their footprint in India. Mr. Kasi Rao, President and CEO, Canada-India Business Council and The Honourable Bardish Chagger, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons gave Welcome Remarks at the Seminar. The event witnessed a gathering of about 70 people. Musical night to raise funds for Kerala flood relief Consul (Press, Information & Community Welfare), Mr. D P Singh attended a Musical night to raise funds for Kerala flood relief, organized by 12 Malayalee Associations on 13 October 2018. He addressed the gathering and appreciated their efforts towards this cause. He applauded their spirit of coming together despite being in a foreign land in order to support their community in times of need. He also briefed the audience about a similar event organised by the Consulate General of on 31 August 2018 to raise funds for Kerala Flood Relief.
Durgotsav 2018 Mr. Hoti Lal, Consul attended the Durgotsav 2018, organized by BPSA-Bongo Poribar Sociocultural Association on 13 October 2018. He addressed the gathering and conveyed best wishes on behalf of the Consulate General of India. He also briefed them about the various Consular services including Open House and Consular Camps by CGI Toronto. Established in 2010, BPSA has been instrumental in promoting and propagating Indian culture in GTA among the cross-sections of the South Asian Community under the leadership of Mr. Amitava Chakraborty. Visit to BLS International Services Consul General Mr. Dinesh Bhatia accompanied by Consuls, Mr. Hoti Lal and Mr. Ajay Sharma visited BLS International Services Canada on October 3, 2018. Updates from India Leader of Opposition of Canada, Andrew Scheer's Visit to India Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition of Canada, Mr. Andrew Scheer, visited India from 7-13 October 2018 to promote the opportunities that Canada has to offer to India. He called on Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi on 9 October 2018. Noting that the relationship between the two countries was elevated to strategic partnership during his visit to Canada in 2015, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in diverse spheres. Mr. Scheer shared his perspective on further developing friendly relations between the two countries. Mr. Scheer also called on key Union Ministers of India, including Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, External Affairs Minister of India and Mr. Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister of India. Upcoming Exhibitions in India Know Your India Programme Know India Programme (KIP) of the Ministry of External Affairs is a three-week orientation programme for diaspora youth conducted with a view to promote awareness on different facets of life in India and the progress made by the country in various fields e.g. economic, industrial, education, science & technology, communication & information Technology, culture. KIP has now announced its 47th - 52nd editions with the partnering states of Tamil Nadu, Manipur & Mizoram, Karnataka, Gujarat, Bihar & Jharkhand and Daman & Diu and Maharashtra. Participants of 49th to 52th KIP will also have the opportunity to participate in PBD Convention, 2019, Kumbh Snan (The Holy Ganges Bath) and the Republic Day Parade in January 2019. Updates from India Know India Programme for young overseas Indians Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, is accepting applications for 49th to 52nd editions of Know India Programme. S. For more details on eligibility and selection criteria please visit - www.kip.gov.in Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children [SPDC] for Higher and Technical Education in India Government of India launched a scheme called “Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children” (SPDC), in the academic year 2006-2007, for the children of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to assist them in pursuing Under Graduate courses in Indian Universities/Institutes. Under SPDC scheme financial assistance for specific undergraduate courses in Professional and Non-Professional courses (except Medical and related courses) is provided towards tuition fee, admission fee and post admission services. The scheme is applicable to NRIs and PIOs from 66 select countries. Scholarship shall be provided to 150 selected students, without earmarking NRIs/ PIOs. 50 out of these 150 scholarships are earmarked for Children of Indian workers (CIWG) in the 17 Emigration Check Required (ECR) countries subject to fulfilling eligibility conditions. Of these 50 scholarships 1/3rd shall be reserved for children who are pursuing studies in India, subject to fulfilling eligibility conditions. If any of these seats are not filled up, they will be made available to applicants from other categories under SPDC and vice-versa. The date for the online submission of application has been extended till October 15, 2018 to enable the candidates who couldn't apply earlier for the scholarship.
