Dear Sunset Elementary Parents: BOARD OF DIRECTORS Virginia Mansilla Welcome to Sunset Elementary and the Spanish International Studies Magnet Program! President We are thrilled to have your child join our school family and program. Nancy Del Pozzo Liaison Lisa Vittore WHO WE ARE Treasurer The Spanish International Parents Association (SIPA) was established in April 1990 as Directors a nonprofit organization run by volunteer parents. It serves as a support group for the Carolina Robbiano Emma Rendina Spanish section of the International Studies Magnet Program of Miami-Dade County Yaneth Ruiz Public Schools (MDCPS), including Sunset Elementary. Christina Umpierre We support and enhance the program, encouraging the study and use of the Spanish language and developing awareness and appreciation of Spanish culture, history, and customs. WHAT WE DO • Raise funds for books and teacher support materials. • Organize social events and cultural activities for families and children involved in the program. • Work closely with other parent support groups and school administration. • Collaborate with MDCPS and its Bilingual and Magnet divisions. HOW WE DO IT We generate funds through annual membership dues, corporate and individual donations, and fundraising events. SIPA-SUNSET ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR 2019-2020 • We held a welcome picnic for first grade families at Fuchs Park in September and the annual picnic for all members at Dante Fascell Park in November. • We hosted a paella for Sunset Elementary administrators, teachers, and employees in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in October. • We purchased Spanish books for the media center as well as books for the third, fourth, and fifth graders in the Spanish Book Club and assisted the teachers in organizing a trip for club members to the Miami Book Fair in November. • We partnered with the Centro Cultural Español of Miami to offer a program of SPANISH INTERNATIONAL villancicos for the first and second graders in December. PARENTS • We organized a field trip for the third graders to a Spanish movie in December. ASSOCIATION • We provided each class in the program with a Roscón de Reyes and crowns to mark la Bajada de los Reyes Magos in January. sipasunset@gmail.com
• We sponsored marine biology and Spanish art workshops in February and March. SIPA-SUNSET FOR 2020-2021: We invite you to become a member in our school. Funds raised at Sunset go directly to our school and program. With your support, we are able to: • Support the Spanish Department with supplies and materials. • Host and organize the Book Club for third, fourth, and fifth graders. • Organize cultural events throughout the school year: Fiesta de la Hispanidad, Bajada de Reyes, marine biology workshops, art workshops, etc. BOOKS FOR SCHOOL YEAR AND CALLIGRAPHY We are selling the required Spanish reading books for the 2020-2021 school year. We also have available calligraphy books for incoming first graders and students in other grades new to the school (cursive is part of the Spanish program). You may also buy the SIPA T-shirt to wear on Fridays. Since 2007, SEED has successfully raised over $300,000 in funds for Sunset Highlights Elementary School through grants, donations and advocacy. Funded 50 iPads and charging stations for this 2020-2021 school year for classroom use Purchased both LanguageNut and BrainPop subscriptions for school-wide use Procured 30 new classroom computers and provided upgrades to classroom and media center computers Purchased Smart Boards for classrooms Donated more than $100,000 in Classroom Educational Enrichment Grants since Seed’s inception, including funding for software programs, iPads, and robotics equipment How can you help?
