Mario Goebbels Chair & Executive Director Report The word “sustainability” is used a lot in reference to conservation and the environment, and it’s a concept we take seriously at Little Traverse Conservancy on several levels: • We manage our nature preserves to provide future generations with intact, sustainable natural areas for esthetic enjoyment, recreation, and nature study. • We use conservation easements to help landowners sustain their land’s biological integrity, scenic beauty, and productivity. • We work with local, state and federal resource management agencies and park systems to sustain the resource value, recreational value and natural integrity of our national forests, state forests, and parks at all levels. • Our education programs help young people learn about natural systems and the importance of natural processes for sustaining our quality of life. • We are expanding into broader stewardship of working forest lands to demonstrate sustainable forestry and wildlife management. • In order to advance this work and to sustain our efforts for generations to come, our Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers are building an organization with a long-term focus, a practical administrative system, and a solid financial foundation. We invite you to review this report for more information and details on our work over the past year. As you look at these pages, we also invite you to see how our Trustees and staff work to ensure that the Conservancy continues to represent a living example of sustainability. Membership provides funding for our day-to-day operations, and if you’re receiving this report you have probably made a donation through our membership program (thank you!). Our members also elect our Board of Trustees and make all of our work possible. Our endowment fund provides financial stability over time, supplements membership income to increase our capacity, and engages our members and supporters in providing for the long-term care of the land and conservation easements entrusted to us. The many grants we receive from individuals, corporations, and foundations provide a third form of operating support and critical funds for land purchases. By obtaining operating funds from three different sources, we help to ensure consistency and sustainability for the Conservancy. By maintaining positive and ongoing relationships with our many grant funders, we sustain our ability to acquire important natural areas for nature preserves and to assist government at all levels in their recreation and resource management activities. Sustainability in action: that’s what we strive for at Little Traverse Conservancy for our land, our conservation easements, our organization, and the communities we serve. To help sustain our efforts into the future, we invite you to introduce friends, neighbors and family members to the Conservancy so that we can pass on to coming generations a wonderful legacy of healthy ecosys- tems, diverse wildlife, and scenic beauty. With your help, sustainability is not just a buzzword but a working principle that will provide a wonderful conservation legacy for our children, and theirs and theirs. Mary Faculak Tom Bailey Board Chair Executive Director 3
The Wonder of Discovery RIGHT OUTSIDE OUR DOORS SMILES...QUESTIONS...CURIOSITY. Over and over again, this is what being in — and paying attention to — the outdoors elicits from children. It is a fact of life that we are inextricably reliant upon and linked to our natural environment. Because the modern world pulls us away from nature, we have to consciously work harder to make sure our children understand these connections. And what a gift it is to have a child feel comfortable in the outdoors. The biggest news of 2014 for the education department came in the form of a generous $200,000 endowment fund donation from Ian and Sally Bund. The gift was given to endow present and future Little Traverse Conservancy education goals and programs. In addition, collaborations with organizations that serve teen-aged youth, college students, and adults is encour- aged. The Conservancy’s education committee developed criteria and started the planning process for how to use the fund to expand programming. Pilot projects and activities occurred in spring of 2015. “This donation not only helps ensure the longevity of the education program, but increases its capacity to reach upper grade levels, an exciting extension of our outreach,” said Executive Director Tom Bailey. “I find it essential in today’s society to get our kids outdoors. Many of my students do not have oppor- tunities nor take the opportunity to appreciate nature. By building in time with LTC, I not only am able to meet several state standards, but allow my students to discover and learn in a way they may have never imagined.” - Christie Meier Teacher at Concord Academy Boyne 4
Dear Miss Sarah, Thank you for bringing us in the woods. I hope you had an amazing time with us 3rd graders. And I was surprised how many roly polies we all found. Thank you! Your friend, Audrey Dear Melissa, Thank you so much! I loved it just loved it. With all the sun, clouds, trees, leaves, grass, dirt, moss, rock. It was so fun I could scream. Aaaaaaaaaaaa! From Addie “All of us share a sense of common purpose. We represent many, many others; some we know, and others we have never met. People throughout the world are increasingly connected by a resonance and passion to create a new common sense for the good health of children today and generations to come.” Cheryl Charles, co-founder of Children and Nature Network 5
Finance & Planned Giving The Conservancy ended 2014 in a strong financial position, with operating reserves of $840,000, Land Acquisition Fund reserves of $1,917,000, and endowment holdings in excess of $10,500,000. One highlight was an Operating Fund surplus of $29,337 of revenues over expenses. The Investment Committee has devoted extra effort this past year to extensively evaluate the Conservancy’s portfolio of investments and allocations. Changes are being implemented to ensure higher growth. The first major planned gift to the Conservancy was a $300,000 bequest in 1993. Since then, we have received bequests from 21 donors totaling $4,500,000, including a $1,750,000 estate gift in 2011. We have also deposited $630,000 in our endowment fund from eight pooled income fund donors, and are managing an additional $325,000 in the pooled income fund from its remaining donors. There are a variety of creative ways that Little Traverse Conservancy can help you meet your own financial goals while providing long-term support to protect the places and experiences that mean so much to you: Bequests - Gifts of cash, personal property, or appreciated securities can be given without affecting your income during your lifetime. Retirement Assets - It is possible to designate all or a portion of unspent retirement fund assets. You may find it is worth more than when left to heirs. Life Income Gifts - Receive regular income payments for life in exchange for your gift of cash, appreciated securities, or other assets such as real estate. Charitable Lead Trusts - Provide regular support to Little Traverse Conservancy for a defined period (a specific number of years or an individual’s lifetime). When the trust terminates, the remaining assets are paid to your heirs. 6

CHARLEVOIX COUNTY Barney’s Lake Preserve Fogg Addition Peaine Township 40 acres 2,000 feet Barney’s Lake; 1,175 feet Barney’s Lake Road This beautiful addition brings the Barney’s Lake Preserve size to 337 acres. The preserve includes 1,770 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline and nearly 3 miles of trails. Karkosak Conservation Easement Evangeline Township 104 acres 300 feet South Arm Creek; .6 mile frontage North M-75 The Karkosak easement maintains a beautiful scenic view in the Walloon Lake Watershed TMPetersen between the village of Walloon and Boyne City, while keeping historic farmland intact. Joseph and Ingeborg Marchio Nature Preserve South Arm Township 40 acres; 600 feet St. Clair Creek With three species of identified orchids and part of the St. Clair Lake watershed, this property had long been admired for its natural assets and significance to the upper Chain of Lakes. A bargain sale from the Marchio family, a grant from the J.A. TMPetersen Woollam Foundation, and significant efforts of the former Charlevoix County Land Conservancy made the purchase possible. Spehar Preserve Gabos Family Preserve & Spehar Preserve Addition South Arm Township City of Boyne City The new 17-acre Gabos Family Preserve Gabos was donated by Michael Gabos in 2014. Family Preserve The preserve offers wildlife habitat and scenic protection and is surrounded by a neighborhood within the city limits of Boyne City. It also lies close to the Spehar Lake City of Boyne City Preserve, which grew slightly in the same Charlevoix year with a small land acquisition. 10
“We were focused so long on just securing the camp, and now the next stages of work begin. We are applying for grants to help us remove the old, restore what is worth keeping, and enhance this area to make it suitable for numerous activities. We hope to make Camp Seagull a location that can be used by our community for everything from concerts and other special events to a place where families can hold reunions. So much is possible here. In the meantime, this place offers rare public ac- cess to beautiful Lake Charlevoix.” – Marlene Golovich, Hayes Township Clerk Camp Seagull Assist with Hayes Township Evangeline Township 20 acres 1,400 feet Lake Charlevoix LTC played a highly active role in the fundraising and acquisition of this lakeside camp. The property provides much desired public access to the lake and is located across the road from LTC’s Driggers Nature Preserve. CHEBOYGAN COUNTY Greenwood Wildlife Sanctuary Conservation Easement Nunda Township 330 acres 1,800 feet MacAndrews Lake; 6,150 feet Little Pigeon River TMPetersen A 330-acre conservation easement was completed on a portion of the Greenwood Wildlife Sanctuary. It adds to nearly 1,400 acres previously protected with an easement. A new bench was built and placed by Dale Landes for enjoying views of the Pigeon River on the Andreae Preserve. The Andreae cabin is frequently used by area scout groups who help with the maintenance and upkeep of the facilities. Addition and Parking Area for Banwell Nature Preserve Koehler Township 20 acres Better access to the Banwell Preserve was achieved through the purchase of this parcel located right off of M-68. The addition will allow for a new parking area leading to the combined trail system of the Banwell/Andreae preserves complex. The land was purchased at a bargain price through a local tax sale and with signifi- cant funding from the Consumer Energy Foundation. 12
Niiwin Ziingaak Nature Preserve Koehler Township 50 acres Ed Brill donated this property to LTC in honor of the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians that once had an established settlement in that region. The Anishnaabowin name for this preserve means “four corners.” The preserve is located just down the road from the Chaboiganing Nature Preserve and the Colonial Point Memorial Forest. Duncan Bay Nature Preserve City of Cheboygan 33 acres; 750 feet Lake Huron Located roughly half a mile east of the Cheboygan River, this new preserve protects Great Lakes wetlands that provide habitat used by resident and migrating waterfowl and other transient species. Cheboygan County Land Protection Stats as of June, 2015 Conservation Easements 50 9,565 acres Nature Preserve projects 45 1,998 acres Transfer/Assist projects 13 4,080 acres TOTAL 108 15,643 acres 13
EMMET COUNTY Elbert Family Nature Preserve Littlefield Township 70 acres Starting with a donation of land from Charlie and Jane Elbert, LTC acquired several parcels of land to compile this new preserve. The land lies across the road from the 117-acre Black Hole Nature Preserve, which abuts nearly 5,000 feet of the Pickerel- Crooked Channel. What once was slated to be a golf course development is now habitat for several thriving populations of plants and animals. Sandhill cranes/Lynn Walters-Fraze Charlie and Jane Elbert Ralph and Ursula Compton Nature Preserve Bliss Township 5 acres with 350 feet of frontage on O’Neal Lake A small nature preserve on a small wilderness lake in northern Emmet County, the Compton Preserve was donated by Mike Compton. Mike’s childhood included many outdoor traditions that he still treasures today, prompting him to donate the land for conservation instead of trying to sell it. In 2014, the O’Neal Lake dam was compromised, drastically reducing the water level and reinforcing the significance of a buffer of conserved, undeveloped land that surrounds this changing watershed. Joseph J. Schott Nature Preserve Little Traverse Township 51.2 acres The acquisition of the Schott Preserve allowed the Conservancy to create a trail system that crosses through both the Schott and the adjoining Watson Family Preserve. Funds for the purchase of this land were provided by the Joseph J. Schott Family Foundation. Addition to Veling Nature Preserve Carp Lake Township 4 acres A four-acre addition to the existing 66-acre preserve expands Paradise Lake Watershed protection in northern Emmet County. 14
Todd Parker Unnamed Nature Preserve Cross Village Township 62 acres 2,450 feet of Lake Michigan; 2,300 feet M-119 The Conservancy purchased the largest remaining undeveloped parcel on Lake Michigan in Emmet County with help from an anonymous donor. The newly-protected land is located roughly one mile south of Cross Village along the famed M-119 Tunnel of Trees. This scenic and ecological wonder will become a publicly-accessible nature preserve. TRAIL VOLUNTEER PROJECTS 2014 Hailand Preserve boardwalk looking from North Western State Trail All in a community. During the summer of 2014, the Conservancy was blessed to have numerous individuals and groups donate their time and talents to assist our staff with completing two major boardwalk and overlook projects at nature preserves along the North Western State Trail near Petoskey. ABOVE: A brand new platform complete with a bike rack and boardwalk heading into the preserve was completed at the Hailand Preserve with assistance from Eagle Scout candidate Zach Hunt and his troop, along with additional volunteers. The decking invites trail users to access the preserve and hike the 1.5 miles of trail through both Hailand the adjacent Helstrom preserve. BELOW: A grant from the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation and hours of volunteer work donated by Evening Star Joinery allowed for the completion of a new Round Lake overlook platform. North Western State Trail users who park at Spring Lake Park near Petoskey encounter the platform roughly 1.5 miles north along the trail. MACKINAC and CHIPPEWA COUNTIES In 2014, the new Derby Preserve trail became a popular destination reached on foot and by boat. With easy access from Cedarville, the preserve lies along the Snows Channel. Local outfitter Woods and Water EcoTours offers trips that land on the shores of the preserve with just a short walk to the nearly three-mile loop trail. 18
