Rotary Club of Bakersfield Twilight “The Torch” January 25, 2021 A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT LI GIBBS Rotary year 2020-2021 “Rotary Opens Opportunities” Twilighters #WeDoItAtNight Hi Twilight family, this is the last issue of January 2021… wow is time flying by! What great fun last week finding out if we would survive a zombie apocalypse…sadly we wouldn’t make it without Collin, who we chose as our leader should we find ourselves surrounded by shuffling, brain-eating zombies. Huge thanks to our Fun Meister Jeremy for a great time and fun trivia games! Now we know which weapons would work best to thwart an attack…if you missed it, you’re just going to have to read the Zombie Apocalypse Handbook. Bravo Jeremy and the adorable and talented Swanson children for the “Tapa of the Month” cooking show. The recipe is in this issue for the last time on page 6. Easy and delicious with a vegetarian option. IMPORTANT: Community Service Director, Laura, is looking for YOUR ideas for service projects, email her at williamslauramargaret@gmail.com with ideas, we need to get this year going! Laura is working with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) as they build a book library and will have more information for us soon! B-Rad (Brad) is working with BERC Youth Service Director and our Interactors on the Rotary Park painting and planting project, he too, will have more info soon. Check on page 4 for a special message from Centennial Interact and two samples of designs, more designs are being submitted. The District 5240 TRF Challenge has been extended to January 31, 2021, most have already pledged, thank you! If you have not made your one-time pledge of just $52.40, please contact Treasurer Denise denise-thomas@live.com as soon as possible (info page 7) Let’s put our club on the map! Pamela Elisheva provided an update on our Global Grants Project featured on page 5. It’s truly exciting and gratifying that even during these challenging times our wonderful Club can still make a positive impact internationally. Thank you to Pamela and Vince for their efforts. We are dark as a club this coming Weds for our Board Meeting. I look forward to seeing you ALL next week, Wednesday, February 3rd for a great program on the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea Hawaii. B-Rad, please invite our Interactors to attend. See you ALL then and bring a friend! Virtual Abraçades, Li January 2021 #WeDoItAtNight
INSPIRATIONAL MOMENT January 13, 2021 Meeting Submitted by PP Anselmo Moreno When I was called to ask if I would do the invocation, or inspirational moment, or thought for today, or whatever it is that we call it now, I thought about having to keep it politically correct or non-denominational. With this in mind, let us pray that someday the importance of being politically correct will take a back seat to being spiritually correct. Let us pray for the wisdom that allows us to encourage and celebrate the diversity of Rotari- ans around the world, whether Republicans or Democrats, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hin- dus, and all others – rather than sterilize our petitions by denying our differences. Let us pray that each of us becomes sufficiently secure in our own faith that we are not of- fended, or threatened, or somehow diminished by the open celebration of a different faith; and let us grow in the understanding that a commitment to diversity is, perhaps, the real tie that binds. UPDATE! GLOBAL GRANT PROJECT HYDROPONIC SYSTEMS IN CIUDAD SANDINO, NICARAGUA Submitted by Pamela Elisheva, International Service As you know, our Twilight Club is participating in Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise’s (RCSBS’s) Global Grant Project with Rotary Club Ciudad Sandino to provide aquaponics sys- tems to 57 families in Ciudad Sandino, Nicaragua. Each family’s system can be done for approx- imately $700, and our Club has pledged $1400 for two systems. Santa Barbara Sunrise informs us that the Global Grant application is just about completed; they just finished a financial calculation as an attachment to the application. Our $1400 is a pledge only at this time, and we will not send the $1400 from our Rotary Club Twilight Foundation un- til the grant has been approved by The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and the agreement documenta- tion signed by the two lead clubs. TRF will request that the clubs who committed funds towards the grant send the money to them for the specific Global Grant number. Once TRF has received all the money, then they will dis- tribute it to the special checking account for the grant project. This way, our club will also re- ceive Paul Harris Fellow credit for the contribution. (YAY!) Here is a photo of the hydroponics end of the project: Translation on the tank: “Donated by Rotary” PAGE 4 !
Centennial High Interact Club Project Submitted by President Makenna Moseley Centennial Interact is starting their new year with a new project! Working together with The City, BERC and Twilight, they are working towards painting trash and planter canisters at Rotary park located on Panorama. This years theme for the canisters is “flowers.” A couple submissions of the Interactors artwork have already been completed (pictured below). Belle Boren’s drawing (top) depicts flowers and but- terflies with the quote “If nothing ever changed there’d be no butterflies,” -anonymous. She chose this quote as a reflection of changes for this new year. Another artwork In- teractor, Frannie Rivas, submitted depicts a vase with flowers and peacock feathers for all the chang- ing events in the new year. Interact can’t wait to paint the canisters beautiful! PAGE 5 !
Tapa of The Month: January Brought to you by Fun Meister Jeremy Swanson Chicken Breasts in Sherry Sauce An easy to make Andalusian tapa! This tapas recipe originally comes from Andalusía. The chicken breasts are quickly and very easily cooked in sherry sauce. Serve with a dry sherry. *check for vegetarian alternatives below Ingredients for four people • 500 g chicken breast • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 250 ml dry sherry • 2 garlic cloves • 2 sprigs of thyme • Salt, pepper, a little flour for turning • Up to 12 stuffed olives Preparation Cut the chicken breasts into small pieces, about 2 inches each, and coat in flour. Peel the garlic. Heat the olive oil in a pan. Add the meat and heat it at high temperature, season with salt and pepper and then remove from the pan. Next add sherry to the roasting juices, add the thyme and let cook. Mince the garlic and add it. Let the sauce thicken by about one-third. Then add the chicken pieces and leave them in the sauce for about 10-15 minutes. You can also cut olives into slices and add to the mix. Serve warm in a small bowl. Marinated chicken breasts If you would prefer to marinate the chicken breasts, take a little more oil, mix all the in- gredients and pour it over the meat. Allow the meat to sit in the sauce for 4 hours be- fore you cook the meat and serve. Note: make sure that the chicken pieces are well cooked. Preparation time: about 40 minutes. Vegetarian Note: I also make this with mushrooms, you can mix them up or use one kind, deli- cious with porcini and/or baby bellos as an appetizer or portobello mushrooms as a main dish with rice. Li’s Personal Note: I first tenderize by pounding chicken breasts flat, they come out very tender and cook much quicker. PAGE 6 !
Rotary District 5240 2020-2021 $52.40 Challenge What is the $52.40 Challenge? The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Annual Fund is the backbone of Rotary projects throughout the world. Contributions to the Annual Fund come back to our clubs in the form of District Designated Funds (DDF) that can be used to help fund local and international projects. Support for the TRF Annual Fund is an investment in our own clubs! In 2020-2021, to encourage support for the TRF Annual Fund, the District has created the $52.40 Challenge. Clubs that achieve a certain level of giving will receive special recognition. How Does a Club Meet the Challenge? Easy! Clubs need to do two things to successfully meet the challenge: 1. 100% Member Participation: Every active member of the club donates something – any amount, large or small - to the TRF Annual Fund by December 31, 2020; AND 2. Per Capita Minimum of $52.40: The per capita donation for the club is at least $52.40. This means that when all the member donations are added up, the average amount is $52.40 or more. How Will Clubs and Members be Recognized? Clubs that achieve the $52.40 Challenge will receive a special banner and recognition at the District 5240 Foundation recognition event later in the year. How Can Members Donate to The Rotary Foundation? Your club may already have a mechanism set up to collect member donations to TRF, so check with your Club Foundation Chair or President. You can also donate directly online at https://www.rotary.org/en/donate . Select the Annual Fund for your contributions. You can make a one-time donation or set up recurring donations that are charged to your credit card on a schedule you choose (monthly, quarterly, or annually). HINT: If you set up a recurring donation of just $83.50 each month, you will achieve a Paul Harris Fellow each year! Note: deadline extended to January 31, 2021 PAGE 7 !
